Halley’s POV

I tore my arm from Kyle's grip and shoved past Shirley, breaking into a run toward the infirmary. I couldn't believe it. I wouldn't. It had to be some sick joke.

I burst through the infirmary doors and found my father’s bed. He had a white sheet covering his face. My hands shook as I pulled it back and the sob I had held back all morning tore loose. The tears came whether I wanted them or not.

When I could breathe again, I made myself look at his wounds. They were healing. Well enough that he should have lived.

Then my wolf caught it. A smell beneath the blood.

Wolfsbane.

Fatal to wolves.

There was something under it too. Something sweet. Something I had smelled an hour ago, pressed against my back with a knife.

Shirley.

It hit me all at once. Shirley had killed my father! Her words in the square came back to me.

Seducing another’s mate is punishable by death…

She believed I had gone after Kyle and she made my father pay for it.

Rage and grief crashed over me. Tears streamed down my face, unstoppable. All I wanted was to crawl onto the bed beside my father and stay there until someone dragged me away.

‘We can't,’ my wolf said, and for once there was no snarl in her, only urgency. Kyle’s men will come looking soon. If we stay, we'll die today.

She was right. I had to stay alive to save the Whitemane pack from Kyle. I pressed my forehead against his cold skin one last time, promising him I'd make them pay, and forced myself to walk away.

I turned for the door.

That was when Dr. Layla found me. Her face was pale with sorrow. "He was doing so well last night," she whispered, her voice dropping to a panicked breath. "But when I checked him this morning, he smelled of wolfsbane. Princess, someone did this."

“Shirley,” I said through gritted teeth.

Layla closed her eyes for a second like the name confirmed what she’d feared. She pulled a file from inside her coat and shoved it into my hands. "Your father made me swear to give you this if anything happened to him."

Before I could open my mouth, the heavy thud of boots echoed down the hallway. Multiple pairs. Moving fast.

"Go. Leave the back!" Layla urged, shoving me toward the exit. She spun towards the sound of the approaching boots.

I heard her meet them at the far doors. “Thank the moon, guards, you have to hurry. She ran out of here, not too long ago, south toward the river gate. I tried to stop her but she was out of her mind. Go, before she reaches the border!”

The boots pounded down the corridor and away. She had sent them the opposite direction from me.

I ran until the noise of the square was gone and there was nothing left but my own ragged breathing. Only when I had crossed the border, did I let myself drop down behind a fallen log.

All I had was the file and the clothes I was wearing. I had thought about grabbing a bag but going back to my room meant being seen and being seen meant throwing away everything Dr. Layla had risked getting me out. So I left with nothing.

And now I had nowhere to run.

‘The file,’ my wolf said. ‘He gave it to you for a reason. Open it.’

With shaking hands, I opened the file. A half-moon pendant slid into my hand, strung on a black leather cord. The silver was smooth in some places and rough in others like it had been handled a great deal.

I had never seen it before in my life. And somehow I was certain it was mine.

Beneath where it had been was a folded note. I knew that handwriting. My father's.

A hard lump formed in my throat as I unfolded the letter.

My daughter,

If you are reading this, then I am gone, and I have failed to protect you. There are things I should have told you long ago. Forgive me.

Years ago, Whitemane and Madfang were bound by a blood alliance. Alpha Victor and I arranged a marriage between you and his son, Damon. I know he may no longer acknowledge that promise, and I cannot guarantee he will help you. But there is no one else left. When every other door is closed, go to him. It is the only way to save Whitemane.

I am so sorry, my girl.

My hands trembled as I read it again, as if the words might change. They didn’t.

I had no memory of an arranged marriage. Nothing.

Everyone knew Alpha Damon of the Madfang Pack. The stories about his brutality were what parents used to scare pups into obedience. He took no allies, showed zero mercy, and anyone who crossed his borders never came back. He wasn’t a savior. He was the kind of monster you learned to avoid at all costs.

And now, he was my only choice.

I broke into a run, north, towards Madfang territory. The faster I reached his border the better, every part of me knew it.

My breath came ragged and my legs began to give. If I could have shifted I would have been there already, four legs covering the distance instead of two but my wolf still wouldn't rise the way she should. I slowed to a walk, one hand braced on a tree, pulling air into my lungs.

A branch snapped.

I whipped toward the sound. Two of Kyle’s personal guards stepped out from the thick brush, blocking my path.

"Give it up, Princess," the larger one sneered. "Alpha Kyle said if you come back quietly, he’ll spare your life. Just sign the pack over."

"I'd rather die," I spat.

The second guard laughed. "That can be arranged. But Alpha wants you alive."

I didn't answer. I bolted.

I didn't even make it three steps before the larger guard tackled me from behind. We hit the dirt hard, rolling through the briars. I clawed at his face until he flinched, scrambling to my feet, but the second guard grabbed my wrists and shoved me backward.

"Stop fighting!" he barked.

I drove my knee straight into his groin. He groaned, his grip slipping just enough for me to wrench myself free.

But I forgot how close we were to the cliff edge.

I stumbled back to regain my balance and my heel met nothing but air.

The ground vanished beneath me.

Halley’s POVA few hours after I woke, Paige came in with a dress over her arm."Just one today?" Usually she brought three or four and let me choose."Alpha Damon picked this one out for you." She laid it across the bed.I looked at it. Long, black, mesh at the sleeves and down the back. Nothing like the soft Whitemane gowns I had grown up in."He picked this." I touched the fabric. "Why?""He didn't say." Paige's mouth twitched. "He rarely does.”'It's beautiful,' my wolf said, pleased.I held it up against me in the mirror. “I’ve never worn anything like this.”"Maybe that's the point," Paige said and went to fetch the pins.I met him in the hall once I was ready.Damon was in an all black suit, clean lines, not a thread out of place. I had seen him in armor. I had seen him bloodied. I had never seen him like this. It made him look less like a weapon and more like a man.Something in my chest pulled tight and would not let go.For a moment neither of us moved. Then he looked me ove

  • Fated to Marry My Enemy Alpha   Chapter 19

Kyle’s POVThe white room smelled of roses. I straightened my jacket and waited for the excitement to come.It didn't.Today I would marry Shirley. I had pictured this morning a hundred times but I had never pictured feeling this hollow.Last night had taken the excitement from me.I had been alone in my office when Ronan came in without knocking. He never came in without knocking."Alpha Kyle." His voice was careful. "We found a body below the cliff."I set down my glass. "Is it her?""The body is too mangled to identify." He paused. "But the clothing confirms it. It is her."I said nothing. There was nothing to say. When he left, the pit settled in my stomach and stayed there. I reached for my wolf the way I always did. He didn't answer. He had not spoken since last night.Shirley was my mate. I had felt the bond the first night, the pull no wolf argues with. But I had wanted Halley too. I had needed her. I had planned to keep her after the wedding, after I stripped Whitemane from h

  • Fated to Marry My Enemy Alpha   Chapter 18

Halley’s POVI tossed and turned all night, Damon's words bouncing around in my head. Lexi. The hospital. The girl my pack had broken without ever knowing her name. When the first light finally crept across the ceiling, I gave up on sleep and got out of bed.'Where are we going so early?' my wolf asked, half asleep."To find Damon. I have to make this right."'And how do you mean to do that?'"I don't know yet. But it was my family that did this to her. The least I can do is help."I dressed and went down the hall to his bedroom. I knocked. Nothing. I knocked again and the silence stretched until I let my hand fall."Good morning, dear."I turned. Paige stood behind me with a breakfast tray balanced on one arm, already steering me back toward my own room with the other."He's been gone since before dawn," she said, settling the tray on the table. "That one barely sleeps when his sister takes a bad turn. Sit. Eat."I sat. "You heard how the party went, then.""The whole pack heard, dea

  • Fated to Marry My Enemy Alpha   Chapter 17

Damon’s POVI left Halley at her door and did not look back.My feet carried me toward the hospital before I had decided to go. I had to see Lexi. I had to know how bad it was.'Go back,' my wolf said. 'Not to the hospital. To her. You owe her an apology.'"For what?"‘For tonight. You threw her to the pack and watched them turn on her. I know you did it on purpose.’ My wolf growled. ‘Her father’s sins are not hers. Go tell her that.’"I have nothing to say to her."'Liar.'I shut him out and kept walking.Dr. Samara was waiting in the corridor outside the ward. She had been Lexi's physician for years, long enough to read my face from down the hall and she came to me rather than make me hunt for her."Alpha Damon.""You know why I'm here." I didn't slow. "Tell me how my sister ended up in the middle of a bonfire when she is meant to be in a locked ward.""She overheard two of the night nurses." Samara kept pace at my shoulder, her voice low. "They were talking about the party. About y

  • Fated to Marry My Enemy Alpha   Chapter 16

Halley’s POVI saw the girl clearer as she approached me. Red hair, shorter than mine, catching the firelight. Her arm was down now but the fury hadn't gone out of her face. For a beat we only looked at each other. Then she ran at me.She came fast, arms flailing, a sound tearing out of her that wasn't quite words. Her nails were out. Her eyes found my throat and stayed there, and I knew she meant to open it. I didn't have time to move. Damon did. He stepped in front of me and caught her by both arms before she reached me, holding her there and bent to say something low against her ear that I couldn't hear. Whatever it was, it didn't stop her fighting. Theo was at his shoulder a moment later."Take her back to the hospital," Damon said, flat. "I'll be there soon." Then, lower, to the girl, not quite steady: "Lexi. Look at me. I've got you. Go with Theo." He passed her into Theo's arms. She twisted against him, clawing at the air. Theo got an arm around her and began drawing her bac

  • Fated to Marry My Enemy Alpha   Chapter 15

Halley’s POVPaige came back after the bath with her arms full of dresses, every one finer than anything I had ever owned.A deep wine-red caught my eye the moment I saw it. I lifted it from the pile."The color of Madfang!" Paige said, pleased."Then it's perfect."She laced me into it, curled my hair, painted my face with a careful hand and when she finally stepped back she pressed both hands to her cheeks."Oh, Luna. Look at you."I looked. I almost didn't know the woman in the glass.Paige excused herself and a moment later a knock came at the door. Damon stood on the other side of it. Our eyes met and then he looked away like looking at me too long was more than he'd allow himself. "Ready to go." Not a question. He turned and started down the hall. I followed a step behind and felt my wolf droop, sullen."It seems the bond only pulls on me," I murmured to her.He gave no sign he had heard. The party was nothing like I had prepared for. I had expected a hall, long tables, the sti
