“Looks like a stupid dog that still doesn’t know her place among this pack,” Fawn smirked.

Aretha paused her playing, “I don’t know what you mean. I always play on my birthday as I used to in Moon’s River for my father. This part of the packhouse is off limits. Why are you three here?”

“Interesting, I don’t recall allowing you bitch to have such hobbies.” Fawn just raised an eyebrow.

The three girls’ faces went pale as the video continued to play. One of them, Rosa, raced to get in front of the screen as it continued to play. Dante, however, had gone a sickly white. He had believed all three of them over Aretha over and over again.

“That’s not how it happened,” Rosa screeched, “It’s been taken out of context.”

“Interesting, you say so, young Rosa,” Delta Leon said clearly, “because we found this doing a random sweep of the cameras, and in a part of the packhouse that is meant to be for family only. Care to explain why you three went into the space of the packhouse that isn’t for general members?”

“That…that can’t be right Fawn said that Dante was going to reject her and take her as his mate tonight, and since she’d be the future Luna in the morning, we were allowed in there.”

“WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?” Dante roared, “I NEVER EVER SAID I WOULD REJECT HER!”

Oscar and Isaac nodded in agreement, although not happy with the contract, Dante had never said that he would officially reject Aretha.

Oscar began to laugh, “You have got to be joking, Dante has been in love with Aretha for years, although he tried to fight it. He never would have rejected her for being the daughter of an Alpha over a normal pack member? Like, he would choose someone who likes to suck up to him over someone he had feelings for?”

Fawn knew then it was time for her to leave. She dropped to the floor, holding her head with one hand and her hand around her throat as she always had when she fainted, making her parents rush to her side. “Why are you picking our daughter?” Her mother snapped. Neither of her parents had returned to their seats at the tables, yet to which the footage still played a deathly crack broke the moment as her head snapped to the video where her daughter was bullying Aretha, now with Aretha on the floor trying to pick up the broken pieces of her flute as she cried, “Why…why? Why would you break the last gift my father had ever given to me for my birthday?”

Fawn’s cold chuckle ran out, “Because now you really know where you belong bitch, on the floor.”

“Who was bullying whom?” rang out a female voice. It was Luna River-Jarvis, Aretha’s mother. Her hand was on her mate Alpha Jarvis’s arm.

Dante looked between the screen and where Fawn lay in her mother’s arms. How many times had he come in and found her like that and believed whatever he had been told on the little he could see?

He was now seeing red. Aretha rarely played, but when she did, it seemed to call to him for some reason.

“Ah, Luna, everyone knows about my daughter and her health issues. She was probably just overreacting to a headache; it’s not like she did it deliberately.”

Alpha Jarvis nodded slowly, “Just so that it isn’t taken out of context, there seems to be a lot of misunderstandings between the girls, including the one where Aretha was meant to have pushed Fawn down the stairs? Oh, after this video, she was found. We went back and checked all the footage about these bullying episodes of Aretha towards Fawn.”

Alpha Jarvis turns to his son, “Go now, go and bring her back home.”

Dante nodded; he didn’t have to be told twice. His wolf had been wanting to shift the whole time to find her and bring their mate and Luna home. He looked back down at Fawn, who was lying there, and he growled, making her flinch, “She’s not even out like she makes out that she’s meant to be what I fool I was to have believed her over what my wolf and heart were telling me.” His voice was full of disgust, not just for her but for himself.

Meanwhile, Aretha had made it to the old board stone between packs and her father’s resting place.

“Daddy, I’m here,” She sobbed. “I’m so sorry, Daddy, I couldn’t stop them…”

-Aretha, we need to go back, our mate is waiting for us.- Her wolf Holly urged, -Can’t you feel it through our bond? He’s worried about us.-

“No, he's not. Fawn has probably fainted again, and he’s freaking out about her as usual.”

Aretha lay down over her father’s grave as she sobbed, years of longing and hurt rushing out. Although she hid it well, the loss of her father so young had left scars that her stepfather had tried hard to heal. But the loss of the last piece of her father on earth was too much for her to bear.

Dante had shifted into Midnight, making it easier for him to follow the pull of their mate bond and her scent. -I told you time and time again their scents didn’t match what we were being told.- Midnight huffed.

-What do you want me to say, Midnight? I was played, yeah, I was every time, because I thought I knew Fawn better, coz I knew her from before Aretha and her mother moved into my father’s packhouse, leaving everything they knew behind. I was a child, and I thought she was just looking for attention, and I had no idea that her father and mine were friends until tonight, that our engagement was proposed by my own father, not hers. My whole life, it feels like a lie, and I don’t even know myself anymore.- Dante countered.

  • Fated to my Alpha Heir Stepbrother Dante   Chapter 10

Dante moved instantly, reaching for the glass on the bedside table. With gentle hands, he helped her sit up slightly, supporting her head as she took small sips. The tenderness in his actions was so foreign to her that for a moment, Aretha wondered if she was still dreaming."Where am I?" she asked once her throat felt less like sandpaper."The mate suite in the infirmary," Dante replied softly, still holding her as if she might shatter. "You've been unconscious for hours."Reality came crashing back: the birthday celebration, Dante claiming her as his mate, her flight to her father's grave, and then... nothing. Aretha stiffened in his arms, memories of years of him treating her like she was dirt.“Uh, umm, I’m guessing you have somewhere else to be more important, Alpha Heir.” Her voice was small, “It’s ok…if you want to leave, I understand.”Dante's heart sank at her words. The resignation in her tone cut deeper than any accusation could have. After years of dismissing her, he could

"We see what we expect to see," she replied, crossing the room to place a comforting hand on his shoulder. "And Nigel has always been good at manipulating expectations."Oscar had made his decision. Placing the velvet box in his pocket, he left his quarters and headed toward the infirmary. The packhouse was quiet now, most members having retired after the evening's drama. As he walked, he pondered the years he'd watched his best friend deny his feelings for Aretha. There had been moments, fleeting glances, unnecessary detours past places Aretha frequented, the way Dante would subtly position himself to keep her in his line of sight during pack gatherings, that had revealed the truth to anyone paying attention. But Dante had been masterful at self-deception, and Oscar had respected his friend's boundaries, hoping he would eventually come to his senses. In the infirmary, Aretha's breathing changed, becoming slightly faster. Her eyelids fluttered, though they remained closed. Dante notic

-I know, but we need to be careful.- Dante replied, watching the steady rise and fall of Aretha's chest. In her unconscious state, Aretha's mind was a whirlwind of memories. Her wolf, Holly, was trying desperately to reach her, to pull her back to consciousness.-He's here, our mate is here!- Holly called through the darkness of Aretha's mind. -You need to wake up.-But Aretha remained trapped in her exhaustion, her body refusing to respond despite Holly's efforts. Deep in her subconscious, she was still at her father's grave, talking to him about everything that had happened. The night stretched on, and Dante found himself unable to sleep despite his own exhaustion. Every time Aretha shifted slightly or made a small noise, he was instantly alert, hoping she was waking up. He wanted, needed, to explain himself, to make her understand that everything had changed.Alpha Jarvis sat in his study, a glass of whiskey in his hand as he stared at old photographs spread across his desk. Oscar paused, not sure how much he should say. This was complicated in ways he wasn’t sure how best to answer it: “Only time will tell how things play out, but whatever happens now is between them.”Oscar prayed that, while in that room, they would complete the bond with the mating and marking, proving what he had always seen, the love that they both tried so hard to run away from, but now on lockdown, there was nowhere to hide any longer. But he knew he couldn’t speak that way.The Alpha and Luna nodded at Oscar’s words, “Yes, little ones, it's all up to them now, but for now, it's time for us to leave them to rest and us getting some as well. There isn’t anything more that we can do here tonight.”Meanwhile, behind the doors of their mate suite of the infirmary, where Dante could hear the footsteps of the rest of the Alpha family slowly move away from the doors of their room.He watched as the six healers moved around Aretha, checking her for injuries and wounds while running tests.

“Dante, Aretha!” Cried Lola as she ran from the open doors of the packhouse.“Easy, little wolf, your sister is still asleep.” Oscar said, trying not to scare her, “Your big brother has been through hell and back as well. Let's get them inside; the healers are meant to be waiting for them.”Although she was only six, Lola’s eyes widened at Dante’s grip on Aretha. She had never seen him go near her, let alone touch her, before. Otto at seven, just inside the door, watching, confusion clouding his young face.“Father, they’re back,” Otto sang out.As the Alpha and Luna walked towards the door, the healers rushed forward with a wheelchair for Dante and a stretcher for Aretha. Midnight’s eyes flashed through for a second as Dante saw that he would have to put Aretha down, his own fatigue fighting with the need to stay close to his mate.“Easy Alpha Heir, everything is going to be ok, you’ll be right next to her the whole way.” Said the head healer with her hands in the air. ‘Why would anyone break her flute? Up until now, and not even an hour ago, had I known where it had come from? Let alone her late father and Alpha. But then she rarely spoke about anything unless she was begging me to look at the camera footage.’-Which means someone knew what it meant to Aretha, what it meant to the Moon’s River pack, and most of all, the effect it had on us when she played it.- Midnight rumble in Dante’s mind as he paced under the skin.“Thank the Goddess you're both alright and you found her,” Came a voice in the darkness, just a bit farther along the dark of night towards that packhouse, maybe about a minute's walk from where he sat, Aretha cradled in his arms.“Show yourself,” Dante growled, his voice more wolf than man. Now, nothing and no one was going to come between him and his mate, who was still unconscious in his arms.Oscar came out of the shadows with his hands raised into the air to show Dante that he had no intentions to harm either of them.“Easy, man
