Because my brother, your uncle Nigel, had told me he had explained it all to you, but that also seems to have been a lie. We have a lot of investigating to do. However, not now, once your mate is better, she is more important than that right now.

Yes, Father, she definitely is, but if someone starts talking, I want updates. I won’t let them hurt her anymore. I…I didn’t mean to hurt her; I thought it was being made as a trade to get the land I had to mate with Aretha. I didn’t know she was once the daughter of an Alpha I…I was told that her mother was a gold digger, and well, that meant that Aretha would be just like her mother. That her mother was given the title of Luna to make sure the pack had a leader, and you just got sucked into mating with her because her mother had passed.

Who told you a lie like that?

Elder Gillian said that your mating with my stepmother would damage our bloodline. I’m not sure how she feels about my half-siblings, Lola and Otto. But what could she say? But a good place to start, if she didn’t like Aretha, there is a good chance she’s gone after Lola and Otto as well.

She better not have, but then most of the pack seem to love both Lola and Otto; it wouldn’t make sense for her to go after them. It should have been the Goddess herself who blessed my union with your stepmother, Nicolette. It would be harder for her to target them as they are born to both halves of the joint pack. What I have heard from your Alpha Heir Unit is that it’s only Aretha that has been in their sights. However, if Fawn had gotten her way, things might have been different.

Damn it, why didn’t I see it? Why didn’t I listen? Father, we’re almost there. She’s still not awake, though.

Sometimes we have to see with our own eyes to believe what is right in front of us, and what we’re about to lose when we have chosen not to see. I should check on Lola and Otto. Although it’s unlikely, I should still ask them; they have been fighting to stay awake till Aretha, and you both returned home.

Understood, father. Based on the landmarks, we’re about five minutes away. Make sure the healers are ready.

They are ready and waiting just outside the packhouse doors.

With those final words, Dante closed the mindlink with his father. He paused for a moment to catch his breath, and he stopped at a nearby seat to take a quick rest. The adrenaline that had carried him to find her and get Aretha home was starting to fade as they got closer and closer to the packhouse.

“Forgive me, Aretha. I just need a quick rest, we’re almost home.” Dante whispered in her ear, “Funny, it's something you once told me, even Alphas need rest sometimes.”

Dante looked down at her face, which looked peaceful, as if sleeping beyond the tear tracks down her face, “After what they did to you today, you wanted to see your father. I knew you played the flute, although rarely, but I never understood why you played so beautifully.” He paused as he brushed a strand of hair from her face, “I need you to know something, Aretha. I know you might not be able to hear me right now, but I need to say it. I…I love you and I…I always have, even when I was being an ass.”

He placed his forehead against hers in the intimate wolf gesture as he breathed in her scent.

“I should get us home. I know that you couldn’t hear the mindlink between father and me, but until you're better, I’ll or uh we’ll be sharing a room. Your wolf and your body need the strength of our mate bond. I won’t mark you until we’re both ready, whenever that may be, but please fight your way back to me.”

Before Dante began to push himself back up, he planted a small kiss on her hair, hoping that somehow Aretha could feel his truth within that gesture. It was true that Dante hated that his mating with Aretha was at first due to paperwork, but a part of him loved the idea too, knowing that he didn’t have to worry so much politically. Until finding out the whole story behind their mating, he had blamed it on Aretha, but now, armed with the knowledge that it was and had been his father’s, not Aretha’s. His own father had tied their lives together shortly after Aretha was born. Now that he had thought about knowing the whole truth that Aretha was born an Alpha’s daughter, it made sense. It was rare for an Alpha female to be born, and her mother had given birth to two. Any Alpha would have tried to get a mating contract with her father’s pack, which meant that their Heir’s pups would be stronger than usual.

This changed everything he knew about their shared history, as neither of them really had a choice in the mating contract, the very thing that he tried so hard to run from, not knowing that the Goddess herself had also bound the two of them to each other. Guilt and self-loathing mingled in Dante’s stomach together like stones.

He knew that he couldn’t change the past as he continued the walk towards the packhouse and help, and he’d be damned if anyone was going to stop him from trying to fix things between himself and Aretha. He also knew that all he could do now was prove to her that the truth and his feelings were real, and that his eyes were now open to the dark truth that had done everything to keep them apart until now.

  • Fated to my Alpha Heir Stepbrother Dante   Chapter 10

Dante moved instantly, reaching for the glass on the bedside table. With gentle hands, he helped her sit up slightly, supporting her head as she took small sips. The tenderness in his actions was so foreign to her that for a moment, Aretha wondered if she was still dreaming."Where am I?" she asked once her throat felt less like sandpaper."The mate suite in the infirmary," Dante replied softly, still holding her as if she might shatter. "You've been unconscious for hours."Reality came crashing back: the birthday celebration, Dante claiming her as his mate, her flight to her father's grave, and then... nothing. Aretha stiffened in his arms, memories of years of him treating her like she was dirt.“Uh, umm, I’m guessing you have somewhere else to be more important, Alpha Heir.” Her voice was small, “It’s ok…if you want to leave, I understand.”Dante's heart sank at her words. The resignation in her tone cut deeper than any accusation could have. After years of dismissing her, he could

"We see what we expect to see," she replied, crossing the room to place a comforting hand on his shoulder. "And Nigel has always been good at manipulating expectations."Oscar had made his decision. Placing the velvet box in his pocket, he left his quarters and headed toward the infirmary. The packhouse was quiet now, most members having retired after the evening's drama. As he walked, he pondered the years he'd watched his best friend deny his feelings for Aretha. There had been moments, fleeting glances, unnecessary detours past places Aretha frequented, the way Dante would subtly position himself to keep her in his line of sight during pack gatherings, that had revealed the truth to anyone paying attention. But Dante had been masterful at self-deception, and Oscar had respected his friend's boundaries, hoping he would eventually come to his senses. In the infirmary, Aretha's breathing changed, becoming slightly faster. Her eyelids fluttered, though they remained closed. Dante notic

-I know, but we need to be careful.- Dante replied, watching the steady rise and fall of Aretha's chest. In her unconscious state, Aretha's mind was a whirlwind of memories. Her wolf, Holly, was trying desperately to reach her, to pull her back to consciousness.-He's here, our mate is here!- Holly called through the darkness of Aretha's mind. -You need to wake up.-But Aretha remained trapped in her exhaustion, her body refusing to respond despite Holly's efforts. Deep in her subconscious, she was still at her father's grave, talking to him about everything that had happened. The night stretched on, and Dante found himself unable to sleep despite his own exhaustion. Every time Aretha shifted slightly or made a small noise, he was instantly alert, hoping she was waking up. He wanted, needed, to explain himself, to make her understand that everything had changed.Alpha Jarvis sat in his study, a glass of whiskey in his hand as he stared at old photographs spread across his desk. Oscar paused, not sure how much he should say. This was complicated in ways he wasn’t sure how best to answer it: “Only time will tell how things play out, but whatever happens now is between them.”Oscar prayed that, while in that room, they would complete the bond with the mating and marking, proving what he had always seen, the love that they both tried so hard to run away from, but now on lockdown, there was nowhere to hide any longer. But he knew he couldn’t speak that way.The Alpha and Luna nodded at Oscar’s words, “Yes, little ones, it's all up to them now, but for now, it's time for us to leave them to rest and us getting some as well. There isn’t anything more that we can do here tonight.”Meanwhile, behind the doors of their mate suite of the infirmary, where Dante could hear the footsteps of the rest of the Alpha family slowly move away from the doors of their room.He watched as the six healers moved around Aretha, checking her for injuries and wounds while running tests.

“Dante, Aretha!” Cried Lola as she ran from the open doors of the packhouse.“Easy, little wolf, your sister is still asleep.” Oscar said, trying not to scare her, “Your big brother has been through hell and back as well. Let's get them inside; the healers are meant to be waiting for them.”Although she was only six, Lola’s eyes widened at Dante’s grip on Aretha. She had never seen him go near her, let alone touch her, before. Otto at seven, just inside the door, watching, confusion clouding his young face.“Father, they’re back,” Otto sang out.As the Alpha and Luna walked towards the door, the healers rushed forward with a wheelchair for Dante and a stretcher for Aretha. Midnight’s eyes flashed through for a second as Dante saw that he would have to put Aretha down, his own fatigue fighting with the need to stay close to his mate.“Easy Alpha Heir, everything is going to be ok, you’ll be right next to her the whole way.” Said the head healer with her hands in the air. ‘Why would anyone break her flute? Up until now, and not even an hour ago, had I known where it had come from? Let alone her late father and Alpha. But then she rarely spoke about anything unless she was begging me to look at the camera footage.’-Which means someone knew what it meant to Aretha, what it meant to the Moon’s River pack, and most of all, the effect it had on us when she played it.- Midnight rumble in Dante’s mind as he paced under the skin.“Thank the Goddess you're both alright and you found her,” Came a voice in the darkness, just a bit farther along the dark of night towards that packhouse, maybe about a minute's walk from where he sat, Aretha cradled in his arms.“Show yourself,” Dante growled, his voice more wolf than man. Now, nothing and no one was going to come between him and his mate, who was still unconscious in his arms.Oscar came out of the shadows with his hands raised into the air to show Dante that he had no intentions to harm either of them.“Easy, man
