I could see his point. It was hard for me to come to terms with it too when Brandon first told me. I didn’t blame Dad for feeling lost. If I didn’t have Brandon or the pack, I would have felt just as he did.

“For years I felt like I was a freak of nature. I didn’t know any other werewolves. I was afraid to search for them. Then we had Elma. I could not balance my life, that was the truth of it. Even though I had control over my form, I was worried about the safety of my girls. What if I accidentally hurt them somehow? What if I had transferred my curse to them? The guilt, the shame, the horror, drove me away. I could not bear to see that my two girls could potentially be werewolves like me. I tried to tell you, honey, but any amount of explanation would have been met with incredulity. Could you blame me? I was afraid.” Dad fell silent for a long time, still clutching Elms as she snored loudly.

“What did you do, Dad?” I asked.

“I went on a quest,” he said. “I traveled in search of others like me. From obscure internet forums to sightings by locals, I traveled the whole world, looking for werewolves. Everywhere. After many months, I found some like me, but they were territorial. Didn’t want me in their pack. This was back in Afghanistan, I think. Yep. I found another pack in Siberia. Then I headed to Europe, Finland, and Sweden. There are plenty of wolves there. Slowly, from their accounts, I started learning about the existence of wolves in America. But I could not come back. I was ashamed. I had left my family. What kind of a coward does that?” At this point, Dad began sobbing loudly.

I saw with wide eyes as Mom went to Dad and hugged him. “Shh.”

“I traveled for years, trying to meet new wolves, looking for my family, and it wasn’t until a long time later that I realized that I already had a family. A family that I had left behind on purpose. I wanted to get in touch with you, but by then it had been years. I didn’t know if you would accept me,” he said.

“You only had to tell me all of this earlier. Who you are does not change the man that I fell in love with, wolf or not. You think that I’m this shallow?”

“It’s not about that, dear. It’s just … I was far gone. I would stay in my wolf form for months, never shifting back. I slowly began to forget about my humanity. This power, this ability, it can be a curse just as quick. I was taken in by some kindly folk who made me get back on my feet and helped me turn back into a human. This happened near the North Pole, by the way. They taught me the meaning of life, of love. They took care of me, made me stronger, and made me promise that I would spend the rest of my days helping other wolves in need,” Dad said.

“And when did you exactly become a werewolf legend? People around the reservation know you by name. They call you the Briar Wolf,” I said.

“I had a new mission, a purpose that I devoted myself to. I traveled all over the world, this time with a new path. I helped the wolves who were being hunted. I united different packs who were warring with each other. In some countries, people have been hunting werewolves for sport. I tried to put an end to that, never realizing that the same thing was happening here in America as well,” he said.

“Last night I was roused from my sleep by the wolf spirit. He warned me that you were in danger. I came as soon as I could,” Dad continued. “What happened here, by the way?”

It was my turn to tell him my side of the story, starting from my visions and ending with the fight we just had with the DOPC.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there. I’m glad that you are all right,” he said, hugging me.

“It’s okay, Dad,” I said, letting go of years of anger and resentment in that one sentence.

“Honey,” Dad said, looking at Mom. “I know none of my explanation is even close to enough, but can you find it in your heart to forgive me? Take me back?”

Mom sighed. “Briar, I thought you were dead. You shouldn’t have left. We could have handled this together.”

“Do you want to handle this together starting now, if it’s not too late?” Dad asked softly.

“Come here, you,” Mom said, reaching to my dad and kissing him on the lips.

Realizing that things would get really hot and heavy in a minute, I lifted Elma and took her to her bedroom. I tucked her in bed and watched her sleep peacefully.

Then I went into my room, resting my weary bones, feeling a deep relief at Dad’s return.

Brandon

The longer I stayed alone, the more the gravity of the situation dawned on me. I had just been elected the leader of the wolves. In the heat of the moment, I had delivered a speech, accepted this title, and greeted everyone around me, but Father Ernest was right. How was I going to pull it off alone?

I needed to be with Alice. That woman could calm down a tempest and right now it felt like I was stranded in the middle of a storm. I had Father Ernest drop me off outside the reservation. In the short time between my getting out of bed and the rousing speech that I had delivered, my injuries had somehow healed. I could walk again.

It was funny, walking along the road leading to Rapid Falls. For most of my life, the place had been covered with dark clouds. On this bright sunny day, it looked like a different town altogether. The green leaves shone in the sun and the brilliant blue sky was dotted with small white clouds. Birds chirped in the air, tittering as they flew from branch to branch.

It truly was a new day in Rapid Falls.

I approached Alice’s house and knocked on the door twice. I hoped that things were okay with her mom and her sister. That they hadn’t worried too much.

Alice opened the door, her face flustered and blushing.

“Brandon!” she squealed.

“I came by to check in on you and tell you what’s been happening since you left,” I said.

“Fine.” Jazz shakes her head. “I’ve been on bed rest lately, so I hired someone as a manager till the baby comes. How’s the clinic going?”“I love being a vet,” I beam. “And the fact that it’s right next to the shelter helps a lot. I can go to Ricky for advice whenever I want.”“How’s your sister?”“Arabella?” I muse. “Last I heard, she was somewhere in the south of France. She sent me a postcard, plus some bottles of wine and a wheel of cheese.”“I’m glad things are working out between you two,” Jazz says softly.“Me too,” I reply warmly. “She opened a clothing line for kids after Brandon was born. She regularly sends clothes for both him and Angie. I think she likes the idea of being an aunt. I’m anticipating a visit soon.”The music begins, and we stop talking.Maria, Harry’s long-time girlfriend, walks down the aisle with Morris. I see Robert beaming at Harry, and my lips curve into a smile. The ceremony is short but beautiful and is followed by a reception under the October night

“Who’s pretty?” Robert appears in the doorway, then blinks at our younger child. “Ah, Brandon. That’s an interesting look on you, son.”I toss my mate a dirty look. “You’re late. Harry’s freaking out. Aisha has called at least ten times to remind you not to forget the rings.”I hear a barking sound, and I stop what I’m doing. “Where are Mano and Zeno?”“With Mrs. Mallory. She’s in her sewing room. Should I check on them?”I shake my head. “Nope. No time. She knows how to handle them. I can’t believe at their ages the two of them are still fighting.”“It’s not fighting.” Robert looks amused. “Ever since the kittens grew up, Mano has adopted Zeno as her own. She likes to randomly discipline him.”I wipe down Brandon’s face. “Go. We’re leaving in one minute.”He runs off, and I’m about to follow him when my mate blocks my path, a rather lecherous gleam in his eyes. “Oh, I think we’re going to be a little late. That’s a very pretty dress.”I know exactly what he’s up to, but I can’t help

Robert negotiated a solid alliance plan that had other clans coming forward, as well. I have been nominated as the single point of contact. Robert and the other Alphas believe this is beneficial to everyone. I guess the constant warring has been exhausting for all parties involved. My father’s people were already dead by Terrence’s hands, and the rest of the clan has dispersed into the other vampire clans. The Nelo Clan has been wiped out completely, which is what I wanted. It’s time for a new beginning. The only loose end is my sister. She’s still running her company, but she’s been avoiding me. I finally had a message delivered to her, and she agreed to meet with me today. There is awkwardness, though, and she can’t seem to meet my eyes.“I’m going abroad,” she murmurs, sitting on the park bench where Angie and I once used to sit and talk.My heart tightens at her words. I watch the children running around nearby and let out a long breath, letting her speak.“Fa—Father wanted me to

“I don’t know why, but I thought he might,” I breathe, my heart pounding in loud, exaggerated beats. “Help me up.”The wound is healing. Ever since I mated Robert and my healing returned, it’s faster than it ever was. I’m no longer bleeding, but I’m still in pain. Robert helps me to my feet and blinks confusedly when Arabella hands him her cardigan. She looks away, and I realize what she means.“You’re naked.”Robert rolls his eyes but wraps the cardigan around his waist. I look over at the fighting and try to be as loud as I can as I yell, “Stop fighting!”I don’t expect it to work, but the drugged shifters freeze in place.“Am I seeing things?” I feel so confused. “Why are they listening to me?”“Your blood.” Ricky is climbing the steps, his right arm and his face badly bruised. “You have both wolf and vampire blood in you. It could be that.”The shifter who is holding Terrence has his eyes fixed on my neck. Ricky notices his line of sight, and his eyes tighten. “May I?”“What?”He

“Like my handiwork?” Terrence’s smug voice comes from behind me. “I used my own blood to create these drugs, so they obey me. They are invincible, and once they bring me your precious Alpha’s head, I’m going to display it in our bedroom. You’re going to look at his decaying face each night when you surrender your body to me.”I give him a horrified look. There is something incredibly sick about this man.“Behold!” Terrence suddenly shouts, his voice echoing over the fighting. “These are the wolves we once feared, Clan Leaders. And look at them now. They will be our slaves, nothing more. Roll it down!”I hear the rustling of cloth from above and look up to see something being unfurled from the upper floor window.“Jean Sanguinite has returned to us. I sent you the message with the prophecy. Our Queen has returned. She will lead us back into our golden era! It is because of her we have been able to subdue these animals! The Nelo Clan pledges its allegiance to her.”His declaration spurs

“I was a child,” I whisper, my ears burning with a painful emotion. “I wasn’t a threat to you or anyone else.” I look down at my trembling sister. “Arabella isn’t lying, is she? She’s finally telling the truth. She did all those horrible things to me because Father told her to listen to you. As simple as that. After all, who could defy our father?” Meeting Terrence’s gaze, I see the utter lack of remorse, and I wet my lips. “So why did you do it?”The betrayal hurts, but not as much as it could have had Terrence managed to convince me to accept him as my mate or had he gotten to me before Robert and I ever met.“Fine.” Terrence’s eyes sharpen. “No more playing pretend, then. I knew who you were the moment I first laid eyes on you. The reincarnation of Jean Sanguinite. My family was her records keeper. My ancestor was her most trusted advisor. The Sanguinite bloodline retained my family as their advisors over the next centuries. Even when the clan decided to erase the shameful mark Jea
