Chapter 6: Between Resistance and Surrender

The messages between the two strangers did not end with that first comment.

Adam wrote every night after returning from another long day spent going between university offices, while Lian waited for evening to come so she could open the same page, looking for a new post from the person whose name she did not know.

Every morning, Adam began his daily battle.

He carried his acceptance file, the letters from the university, and every document proving that he had earned the place he had worked so hard for.

He entered the same building.

He waited in the same line.

And received the same answer.

“We’re sorry… The decision is final.”

At first, he thought it was simply an administrative problem.

Then he thought it would take time.

But the days passed, and nothing changed.

Every door he knocked on led him to another door, and every employee referred him to a higher-ranking official, until every possible path ended with the same sentence:

“Your place has been forfeited.”

Each time he left the university, his steps felt heavier than before.

He did not shout.

He did not lose his temper in front of anyone.

He kept it all inside.

And whenever he returned to his small room, he opened his laptop and wrote.

He did not write for people to read.

He wrote so he would not suffocate under the weight of everything he was feeling.

One night, he posted:

“A person may lose their dream once, but they lose themselves when others convince them that giving up is wisdom.”

A few minutes later, a new comment appeared.

It was her.

“Does every closed door deserve years of our lives spent knocking on it? Perhaps there are doors we cannot see because we keep staring at the one that was closed.”

Adam read the words several times.

Then he wrote:

“And who can guarantee that the other door isn’t an even bigger cage?”

Lian smiled as she read his reply.

For the first time in weeks, she felt that she was talking to someone who understood what helplessness meant.

She did not know that he was living through a helplessness much like her own.

Meanwhile, the wedding preparations were moving faster.

The maids carried boxes of clothes, the designers measured curtains, and the relatives talked about the celebration as though it were an occasion they had all been waiting for.

But Lian…

She felt as though everyone was building a huge stage while she was the only actress who had never read the script.

Every time she looked at the wedding dress, she felt that it was not a white dress…

But a beautiful chain.

That night, she returned to the same page.

She found a new post.

“I’m not afraid of losing my dream… I’m afraid of waking up one day and realizing I have become someone I never chose to be.”

She stared at the words for a long time.

Then she wrote:

“Then don’t let them change you, even if they win today.”

Adam did not reply immediately.

He stared at the screen for a while, then closed his laptop.

Her words were simple…

But they stayed with him throughout the night.

The next morning, he stood in front of the university gates once again.

He stared at the building for a long time.

Then he put his file back into his bag.

For the first time…

He did not go inside.

He quietly turned around and walked in the opposite direction.

He had not given up.

But he realized that fighting a door that had been closed forever might prevent him from seeing another door waiting for him somewhere else.

In the same city, Lian closed her bedroom window after a long night.

She looked up at the sky and whispered,

“If I can’t change my fate today… then I’ll change myself.”

She did not know that those words would be the first step in a long journey that would transform the frightened girl into a woman no one could ever force onto a path again.

As for Adam…

He walked through the city streets without any clear destination.

He was no longer carrying university papers…

He was carrying something heavier.

The responsibility of starting his life from scratch.

On the other side of the world…

Adam’s father was waiting.

During the first few days, reports reached him regularly.

“He went to the university.”

“He submitted another appeal.”

“They rejected his request.”

Then, the next day…

“He went back again.”

He read the reports in silence, then folded them and set them aside without a word.

He knew his son well.

And he knew Adam would not give up on his dream easily.

But after several weeks…

Everything stopped.

His assistant entered the office and said,

“Sir… he didn’t go today.”

His father raised his head for the first time.

“Perhaps he was late.”

The assistant shook his head.

“We watched him until evening… He never went near the university.”

Silence fell.

The next day…

Then the day after…

Then an entire week.

Adam’s name no longer appeared in any report concerning the university.

His father slowly closed the file.

He sighed.

He said to himself,

“Finally… he understands.”

He thought his son would return soon, carrying the same bag he had left with, admitting that his dreams had been bigger than reality, and sit beside him at the company, where his father had chosen his place from the day he was born.

He waited for a message.

Then a phone call.

Then news that Adam had booked a return ticket.

But…

Nothing came.

He heard no news of a plane bringing his son home.

He heard no words of surrender.

There was only silence…

And Adam’s silence had never been a sign of defeat.

More often than not, it was the beginning of a decision that no one knew about but him.

Adam’s father closed his office window and looked out at the city stretching before him.

For the first time in years…

A feeling he would not even admit to himself crept into his heart.

What if my son never comes back?

Adam’s father remained standing by the window as the city slowly sank into the darkness of evening.

He was not looking at the skyscrapers or the cars moving below.

He was seeing a little boy running through the mansion’s garden, stumbling every few steps, then getting back up laughing as he ran toward him.

He remembered the first time Adam had held his hand.

And he remembered the first time Adam had called him “Dad.”

He smiled without realizing it.

For many years, he had not allowed himself to revisit those memories.

He had believed that being busy with work was more important than paying attention to the details of his son’s childhood.

Adam had grown up quickly.

And at every stage, his father had believed there would be time to grow closer to him.

But time always seemed to get there first.

Meetings…

Travel…

Deals…

And endless projects.

Whenever he returned home, his son would already be asleep.

And whenever he woke in the morning, his father would already have left.

Until their conversations were reduced to a few brief minutes about studies, appointments, or exam results.

He had never asked him about the book he was reading.

Nor had he asked why he was so passionate about a field in which his father saw no future.

He would simply say,

“When you grow up… you’ll understand.”

And he had believed that was enough.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

Then slowly sighed.

He said to himself,

“Perhaps I was too harsh…”

But the words faded before he could finish the thought.

He returned to his desk and sat before the piles of files.

He picked up a file bearing the company’s name.

Then another concerning a billion-dollar project.

Then a report about a new competitor in the market.

Numbers did not wait for emotions.

And markets showed no mercy to those who hesitated.

He closed his eyes again, then said quietly, as though convincing himself,

“He’ll hate me today… but he’ll thank me tomorrow.”

He picked up the phone and called one of his assistants.

“Keep monitoring him.”

He paused for a moment, then added firmly,

“But… don’t interfere in his life.”

He ended the call and rearranged the files in front of him.

Within minutes, he had become the same man everyone knew.

A man who never allowed emotions to guide his decisions.

A man who believed that the family’s future mattered more than the desires of one individual, even if that individual was his only son.

And yet…

In a small corner of his heart, one question remained, refusing to die:

Had he lost his son… while trying to build a future for him?

There was nothing between Adam and Lian except a small screen. No home that brought them together. No chance encounter on a street. No face-to-face conversation. And yet, their few words had begun to create something neither of them fully understood. It was strange to feel close to someone you had never even sat across from. But sometimes, souls did not need to share the same place to understand each other. Every morning, Lian woke up thinking about Adam's question: “And you, Lian... have you found your way?” It wasn't an ordinary question to her. It felt like a door opened by someone she barely knew. A door leading toward a part of herself she had neglected for too long. Adam, meanwhile, found himself waiting for her replies as well. He wasn't waiting for her love. Nor was he
