Kieran

I was burning toast when Brody came downstairs, still in the dinosaur pajamas, the fox tucked under one arm.

He stopped in the kitchen doorway and watched me scrape the black off a slice with a butter knife. I didn't turn around right away and I didn't apologize for it. Leah had told me to stay unfussy, and I was learning that mostly meant doing ordinary things in front of him without making them into events.

"That one's ruined," he said.

"It is."

"You can have mine."

He hadn't made one

KieranDex found her in four days, which told me how little effort my father had put into hiding her and how much he'd relied on my never asking."Isolde Draven kept her maiden name for the first few years," he said, laying a single sheet on my desk. "Then she dropped it. She lives two hours south, in a town called Marren. Runs a small bookshop with a woman named Odile. No clan registration, no flags, nothing. As far as the records go, she simply stopped being one of us."I read the address three times. It was an ordinary street."Do you want me to arrange a visit?" Dex asked. "A courtesy call first, so she isn't surprised?""No." I folded the paper and put it in my pocket. "I'll go myself. Don't send anyone ahead of me."He looked as though he wanted to argue and decided against it. "Alpha," he said instead, and then, more quietly, "Kieran. I'm glad you asked."I didn't know what to do with that, so I nodded and left.Leah had cleared her whole afternoon without being asked. I found

LeahKieran's father did not come inside until he had been invited, and he made the waiting look like a courtesy rather than a test. He stood at the foot of the steps with both hands folded over his cane and let the silence stretch until Kieran said, in a voice I barely recognized, "Come in."They put him in the east sitting room, the one with the long windows, because it was the only room in the house where Kieran had never been happy as a child. I understood that choice only later. At the time I just saw a man of seventy sitting very straight in a chair too small for his pride, accepting tea he did not drink."I won't pretend this is a social call," he said."I didn't expect you to," Kieran said."You didn't invite me to the ceremony.""I did. You declined.""I declined to endorse it. That is a different thing." His eyes moved to me for the first time since he'd arrived, pale and unhurried. "Madam Draven.""Leah is fine.""I'm sure it is. I will not be using it." He set the cup down

We ate standing at the counter. He told me the pterosaur lecture had a second part, and I said I had time.He didn't ask about the garage. He walked there on his own after breakfast, as if he'd been circling it all morning, and stopped in front of the red bicycle with the ribbon still on the handlebars."Is it for me?""It's here if you want it," I said. "It stays at this house, for when you visit.

LeahBrody had packed his own bag. Cain's driver explained this at the door in the careful voice of a man who had lost an argument about it. Dinosaur pajamas, three books, a stuffed fox with one chewed ear, and a drawing folded into quarters that Brody refused to let anyone carry."He wants to give you that himself," the driver said.Cain hadn't come. He'd sent a message saying he would collect Brody on Sunday at four and stay out of the way until then. I had read it twice looking for a catch and found none.Brody stood on the front step and studied the house like he was reading its mood. He was seven. He had spent a month in a place where nobody explained anything to him, and he'd learned to watch for weather."Is it okay that I'm here?" he asked."Yes.""Is it okay with him?"Kieran had stopped at the bottom of the steps, a respectful distance away, hands visible. I recognized that as deliberate. "I asked for you to come," he said. "So yes."Brody thought about that, then held the d

KieranDex had fixed my collar three times, and each time I had let him, because it gave my hands something to do besides shake."You're allowed to be nervous," he said, stepping back to check his work. "Nobody in that hall will hold it against you.""I'm not nervous.""Your jaw has been locked since breakfast."I let that go. The pack hall was filling behind the closed doors, a low wash of voices and chairs scraping marble, and every sound in it was a reminder of how many people were about to watch me stand still and wait for a woman."Your father's seat is empty," Dex added, more quietly. "I had the staff leave it in place in case he changed his mind.""He won't.""I know. I thought you'd want it there anyway, so no one could say you hadn't offered."I nodded once. The invitation had gone out three weeks ago, in my own handwriting, and his reply had been a single line about duty and a council that hadn't been consulted. I had read it standing up, folded it, and felt less than I expe

LeahI found Kieran in the garden again, the same bench where he'd first told me to take my time, months ago now, though it felt longer than that some days and shorter on others."You've been thinking," he said, not looking up from the herb bed he'd apparently taken up tending in his spare time, an odd, quiet habit I'd grown fond of without ever mentioning it out loud."I have an answer."That got his attention. He set down the small trowel and gave me his full focus, the same way he had the day he'd first asked, patient enough not to guess ahead of me."I want it," I said. "Luna, in front of the pack, your name attached to mine in a way nobody can quietly dismiss at a dinner table. Not because I've stopped being afraid of the word. I don't think that fear disappears just because I've decided something. But I'm tired of letting eight years with Cain define what the title means before I've had a real chance to find out what it means with you.""What changed?""A few things, honestly."

  • Finally Done, Ex. I Am Mate, Not Maid   Way Too Hot

His thumb traced along my jaw like he had every right to touch me. The heat coming off his skin was insane — way too hot, like this bastard was straight-up branding me with molten iron. That Lycan energy prickled across my nerves, making my pulse stutter while something between my thighs tightened

  • Finally Done, Ex. I Am Mate, Not Maid   Nothing Come Free

LEAH "Who sent you?" I asked low and sharp. "The one responsible for your father's death." That stopped me cold. My father, died eleven years ago in a lycan brutal attack. He was just a man who doing his job, trying to protect a warehouse full of food and medicine supplies, and those fucking mo

  • Finally Done, Ex. I Am Mate, Not Maid   Bad Memories

I had just zipped up my bag when the bedroom door swung open. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was — that perfume always clung to her. It dragged up every bad memory I'd buried during my years as her daughter-in-law. Every bit of suffering in this house started with Lady Margaret. "W

  • Finally Done, Ex. I Am Mate, Not Maid   Damaged

"I lost our pups." "Mm." His thumb kept moving across the screen. "Anyway, Brody hasn't eaten yet. Make him breakfast. Simple is fine." I didn't respond. I was too stunned to respond. What Cain was doing was cruel beyond anything I had words for. After everything I had given up, after walking
