Chapter 6

Author: H. Spoonie
Because I didn't return during the stipulated time with Laila's favorite dessert, Jackson went mad and sent me messages, cursing me out.

"You crazy woman! Do you think you can threaten me? No one cares about your well-being—I only care about the safety of my pup in your belly!"

"Tomorrow, I'll hold a press conference and publicly acknowledge Laila as my mate in the Ulvengard pack. Laila said she's willing to give me a pup. I don't want the one in your belly anymore!"

"I won't break the mate bond with you either—I want every intimate moment with Laila to stab into your heart like a blade, so you'll suffer more than she did from the wolfsbane!"

He messaged me every few minutes, and at this rate, I was starting to wonder if he actually cared about me.

However, judging by the timing, the things I sent them should arrive tomorrow. When that happened, Jackson would definitely bombard me even more. I really couldn't be bothered to respond.

With that thought in mind, I deleted his contact. Unexpectedly, the very next day, Laila messaged me.

"My dear Seraphina, thank you for giving up Jackson and making things easier for us. Last night was our wedding night, and we didn't even change the marital bed! He was so vigorous. As his mate, last night must have been uncomfortable for you, right?"

"Oh, and here's the link to today's press conference. Make sure you tune in, okay?"

I checked the time. It was just about to start, so I clicked on the livestream link.

The press conference was being held in the living room of the house Jackson and I used to live in.

Many reporters were present. The event hadn't officially started yet, and Jackson was talking with his men, seemingly explaining the procedure.

But he seemed distracted—he kept glancing toward the front door again and again, as if expecting an arrival.

And, by his side, Laila looked bashfully demure. Gone was the arrogant, sharp-tongued girl I'd always known—she was trying hard to project the dignified demeanor of a Luna.

My father and stepmother sat behind them, radiating a noble air that distracted people from the calculating gleam in their eyes.

Finally, the press conference officially began.

Right off the bat, a reporter asked sharply, "Why is the Ulvengard pack replacing its Luna? Alpha Jackson, have you betrayed your original mate?"

The reporter's bold question made many in the livestream comments start to believe the broadcast was genuine and not just a political performance.

Jackson cleared his throat and calmly replied, "My ex-mate—Seraphina—and I had a peaceful separation. There was no betrayal from either side."

Then he pulled Laila to his side and said, "Because of the Moon Goddess's arrangement, I chose the wrong mate. For the rest of my life, I want to be with the one I truly love."

The livestream comments scrolled by furiously. Many believed what Jackson said and widely praised their brave pursuit of love.

Strangely, none of the reporters asked about me again. Instead, they kept asking about Jackson and Laila's love story and future plans.

I let out a chuckle. Who wrote this terrible script? Anyone with half a brain could see the plot holes.

But Jackson clearly hadn't noticed, as he mechanically read his lines while constantly glancing toward the door.

At last, someone pushed open the door, and Jackson couldn't help but smirk—that was until he saw who it was. Stunned, he asked, "Why is it you? Where's Seraphina?"

After I got together with Waylon, I finally understood that true love could heal the heart. These days, I thought about the past less and less. So, when I saw Jackson again, it felt as though a century had passed. That press conference made Jackson a laughingstock among the packs. He was banished by the members of the Ulverngard pack and stripped of his Alpha title.Only after he lost his power did he realize how foolish he had been."Please forgive me!" Jackson kneeled before me with tears streaming down his face. From the whispers around me, I learned that Jackson had been lingering near the Nocterra pack for months. He had been trying to get in to see me, but Waylon had always stopped him.Jackson tried to explain, "It was all because of her that I believed her every word, trusted her lies, and hurt you repeatedly!"She's the one who killed our child! I've already killed her—tortured her for revenge for our child! In fact, I'd already fallen in love with you all these years,

As I no longer wanted to look at those two, I turned around and left the underground dungeon.Waylon followed me upstairs. When I could no longer hold back my tears and collapsed crying, he hesitated for a moment before he pulled me into his arms and gently patted my back to comfort me.Only after I finally calmed down did I realize how ambiguously intimate we were being.I pulled away from his embrace, and while looking into his gentle gaze, another thought suddenly struck me."You just mentioned that I cried by the withered tree outside the city. How do you know about that?" I asked. When I was young—whenever I was mistreated by my father and Mary—I would run to that tree outside the city to cry and confide in a boy who wore a wooden mask.In turn, he would share with me the burdens of being weighed down by his father's high expectations and the great pressure he felt.We comforted each other and got through an otherwise joyless childhood together. That was the secret hideout

Waylon paused as he tucked in my blanket, then looked at me gently. "I thought I had made it very obvious. Seraphina, you're so smart, so how could you not see that I like you?"I froze, surprised that he would say it so bluntly. Honestly, I had suspected that he might like me, but I hadn't dared to believe it. "What do you even like about me? I'm a divorced woman without a wolf," I said.Meanwhile, he was the Alpha of the Nocterra pack—the gap between us was so vast.I didn't say that part aloud, but I believed he understood it anyway.Waylon didn't answer me. Instead, he asked, "Do you still like Jackson?"Stunned, I retorted, "What?""Do you still like him?""How could you think that? If I still liked him, I wouldn't have broken our mate bond.""Good." He exhaled deeply. "Then I still have a chance."I didn't know how to respond, and under his tender gaze, my face gradually flushed red with heat. However, having just gone through a failed relationship, it was truly hard

Jackson pulled out the dagger I had sent to him—the very blade that had caused me to lose my pup. He pressed a mechanism on the hilt, triggering a device hidden inside, and sprayed what was inside vigorously at Laila. It was an enhanced version of wolfsbane I had made for his survival. Once it touched a werewolf's skin, it would seep in with no cure.Laila clutched her face and screamed in agony.Mary went mad with rage and shrieked uncontrollably, "You bastard, what are you doing to my daughter? She's always been innocent! You're the one who hurt Seraphina all along! What does that have to do with us?"Jackson trembled all over when he heard this, and then he gave a bitter laugh and nodded. "That's right. I was the one who mistreated Seraphina. I hurt her. I killed our pup. But even so…"A fierce gleam suddenly flashed in his eyes before he shouted, "We'll still drag you all down to hell with us!"As he finished speaking, he bared his claws and lunged at the three of them. Chaos

In the video, Laila—who Jackson remembered as gentle, innocent, and supposedly poisoned by wolfsbane and needing protection—was smoking and drinking.Meanwhile, on the couch in front of her, Dad and Mary looked immensely pleased with themselves. Especially Mary, who was counting the monetary wedding gift Jackson had given."Our darling daughter really is clever—pretending to be poisoned by wolfsbane and deceiving that dumb Jackson."Haha! He's an Alpha, yet he can't even tell real wolfsbane from fake? How on earth did he survive on the battlefield all these years?"Mary's tone was sharp and mocking. As she spoke, she exchanged a smug glance with Father and sneered. At this point, Father seemed to remember something and said bitterly, "If that brat Seraphina hadn't run off to save his life back then, the Alpha title of the Ulverngard pack would've been mine! I spent so much money pulling strings to lure those enemies in!"If we hadn't run out of money, we wouldn't have had to keep

I raised an eyebrow. It was no wonder Jackson looked so strange during the entire press conference—it turned out he was hoping I'd show up and ruin his "celebration".Did he really expect me to act like I used to—causing a scene the moment I saw him and Laila tangled up together?Too bad he would be disappointed, for the person who arrived wasn't me, but a stranger brought in by one of Jackson's men.Jackson's men whispered something in his ear, and Jackson immediately showed a smug smile. "You're the courier Seraphina sent? What did she send me this time?"The courier handed him the package I had prepared. "This is a delivery from Ms. Seraphina. Please sign for it."Jackson began opening it while saying, "Go back and tell Seraphina that sending me gifts won't get her forgiveness. She'd better behave and hand over the pup…"He was about to mock me further, but he froze up when he saw what was inside the package. Inside were the things he had once given me—items I had once cherish
