Chapter 10

Author: Morning Light
Corinne snapped and rushed up to Trevon, grabbing his shirt and screaming in his face.

Trevon glared at her.

"Be quiet! You stole Jessica’s place, made me give you a child, and even forced me to take her legs just to save you. You think I’ll ever let you off the hook?!"

Corinne stared into Trevon’s eyes and let out a wild, unhinged laugh.

"Trevon, don’t act like you’re some great lover. If Jessica was truly the only one for you, then how did I end up in your bed? How did I get pregnant so easily?

"If you hadn’t allowed it, if you didn’t want it, I would’ve never dared to treat Jessica the way I did.

"You act like you're better than me, but we’re the same. So why pretend it’s all my fault?

"You’re the one who destroyed Jessica’s life, not me. You!"

Trevon’s eyes filled with rage.

"Shut up! You’re disgusting! I’ll kill you!"

Before anyone could react, he grabbed a fruit knife from the table—the one he used to slice Corinne’s fruits every day—and drove it straight into her che

  • Fins of Farewell   Chapter 9

"Corinne, you need to remember your place. You're just a sneaky mistress who clawed her way up by using a child. Everyone knows mistresses don’t get to act high and mighty in front of the real wife. If you’re going to be a mistress, at least follow the mistress rules. Didn’t anyone ever teach you that?"Corinne realized I was no longer the woman who just kept quiet and took it. That shook her. The fire in her eyes flickered out, and she backed down.Clutching her face, she burst into tears and tried to snuggle into Trevon’s arms, playing the victim, begging him to scold me.Trevon ignored her. He shook off her hand and stepped toward me, his eyes filled with something like remorse."Jessica, you’re the only wife I’ve ever truly had in my heart. Just say the word, and we’ll get remarried. I swear—""Trevon!" Corinne shrieked, cutting him off. "How could you say that to me?! Don’t you remember who saved your life? If it weren’t for me, you’d be rotting at the bottom of the ocean!"

"Do you really have to make this so hard on me, Jessica? Corinne’s been nothing but good to me. She saved my life, and we’ve got history—we grew up together. How could I ever hurt her?"I almost laughed. "So you can’t hurt her, but you can be heartless with us?"I stepped aside and opened the door wide. "Mr. Chapman, I hope you’ll find time to come with me to the courthouse to get our divorce sorted. Mermaid or human, I want nothing more to do with you."Before Trevon could respond, I shut the door in his face, leaving him with just a glimpse of me turning away with a flourish.I wondered if he now felt the way I had when he left me without a second thought to chase after Corinne. However, it honestly didn’t matter anymore.I no longer wanted to feel ashamed of the joy I’d once had, even if it hadn’t lasted. I had decided to be someone whose heart was free. Someone unafraid of welcoming new friends and willing to say goodbye when the time came.---After nagging Trevon repeated

  • Fins of Farewell   Chapter 7

"Could this be some kind of biological weapon? Mermaids belong in the ocean, so why are they showing up in our world? Just by looking at how wild and out of control they are, you can tell they must be super strong. We humans don't stand a chance against them.""Guys, I’ve got some juicy news. A few days back, I was at the hospital’s baby place, and I think I saw this mermaid mom and her kid. People say they caused someone so much stress that she almost lost her baby. Then, the woman’s husband got so mad he chopped off the big mermaid’s tail... Wow, talk about getting what you deserve.""So, where are they now? They’re not hiding somewhere in the city, looking for their next victim, right?""Someone call the cops quickly! Let the special police catch them and keep us safe!"The noise about catching me and Seraphina was getting louder and wilder. I frowned, and sure enough, there was another message from Corinne.[How does it feel to be seen as a monster? Not fun, huh?]I didn’t ge

  • Fins of Farewell   Chapter 6

That had to be my child—the one Trevon had abandoned in the deep woods after she was born. She was the only one who would have a tail just like mine.Without thinking, I raced in my wheelchair toward the fancy medical center Corinne had posted about online. After some searching, I found her room. I was about to barge in when I overheard Trevon and Corinne talking inside."Trevon, she’s your daughter. She’s so young… Is it really okay for me to take care of her?""That kid’s lucky just to be alive," Trevon replied coldly. "Giving her to you is a blessing. Whether she makes it or not, that’s up to fate. If I hadn’t been soft-hearted and spared her, she’d be in some wild animal’s belly by now."He let out a dismissive snort."She’s got her mother’s stubbornness. I locked her in a metal cage, whipped her every day, and she still wouldn’t break..."Tears blurred my vision as I shoved the door open.Trevon’s words died in his throat. He jumped up, stunned, and quickly moved to block

I gazed into the eyes that had once captivated me and spoke with a steady voice.Trevon froze for a moment but quickly composed himself and reached out to gently touch my cheek."Jessica, I know this is a lot for you to process right now, but don’t worry. I’ll find the best doctors, and you’ll be back on your feet in no time."You’re still the one and only Mrs. Chapman. Corinne could never take your place. You can be sure of that..."I closed my eyes, cutting off his rambling."Trevon, how could you possibly think I’d forgive the man who stole my legs, leaving me to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair?"You destroyed my life. And now you expect me to live under the same roof with the people who caused all this, to be grateful, and to keep smiling? Doesn’t that disgust you?""Jessica, I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Please… just trust me."His voice shook as he held my hand tightly, his fingers trembling as they brushed against my pale face."If my leg
