Chapter 4

Author: Aetheria
The next day at two in the afternoon, Alexander and I were supposed to be walking into the wedding chapel at this very moment.

But instead, I was sitting in the conference room with the company's shareholders.

Alexander burst in with Lily.

"Today is our wedding day. Why didn't you show up?"

"I never said I would attend the wedding."

I looked him straight in the eyes, calm and composed.

Lily hid behind Alexander, peeking out and smiling at me — her eyes full of malice.

"Joanna, I'm sorry. I just wanted to experience what it felt like to be proposed to."

"It's all my fault. We stayed up too late last night, and I haven't returned this to you yet..."

As she spoke, Lily took off the ring from her finger.

A long, slender hand stopped her.

"You don't need to do that. She's just throwing a tantrum at me."

Alexander looked up, his eyes full of dissatisfaction.

"Since the shareholders' meeting is already in session, there's something I'd like to announce as well."

He pulled out a contract and handed it to the assistant beside him.

"I'm transferring 5% of my shares to Lily."

Everyone was stunned — except Lily, who flashed a triumphant smile.

A shareholder sitting nearby frowned. "Alexander, a 5% stake will affect the company's decision-making."

Alexander chuckled lightly. "Lily just wants to experience what it's like to be part of the company. I'll still be the one making all the decisions."

"Then I'd like to ask you both, as shareholders, to take responsibility for this loss."

I cut him off and placed the report on the desk in front of him.

Because of the funding shortfall, multiple projects had ground to a halt, and the partner companies had filed for breach-of-contract damages.

The total amount: 300 million.

His pupils dilated. He stared at the report in disbelief.

"How is this possible? How could this much damage come from just this amount of money?"

Then, as if something had just occurred to him, he frowned and looked at me.

"You're still mad at me, aren't you? You're deliberately using this to threaten me."

"Today is our wedding day. What kind of nonsense are you pulling?"

Lily grabbed the sleeve of Alexander's suit from the side.

Tears streamed down her face pitifully. "If this is because of me, I'll leave right away. Take back all these shares too."

Alexander squeezed her hand tightly and shook his head.

"It's not your fault. It's Joanna who brought her personal emotions into work."

I didn't want to waste another word on him. I brought up the evidence one by one on the projector.

As he looked at it, his face grew paler and paler.

"How is this possible! It was only fifty million..."

The shareholders beside him had already lost patience and spoke up directly.

"According to company bylaws, you, as CEO, are responsible for this loss."

Alexander clenched his fists and looked at me in disbelief.

"The company has indeed suffered significant losses on various projects over the years — losses that I covered entirely out of my own pocket."

"I should reflect on myself — specifically, on the fact that I shouldn't have filled so many of your holes."

"So I've forwarded all the outstanding accounts to the legal department."

Alexander stared at me in disbelief. The shareholder beside me rose to his feet and spoke gravely:

"After Joanna withdrew her personal funds, you continued embezzling company money — causing the company to owe this much in breach-of-contract penalties!"

I leaned back in my chair and twirled my pen.

"Furthermore, per the shareholders' resolution, all of your shares are to be reclaimed and used to cover the breach-of-contract penalties. A new CEO has already been elected."

His face went instantly white, his lips trembling uncontrollably.

"Now, as the new CEO, I officially inform you — you're fired."

Toward dusk, as I stepped out of the elevator after getting off work, I saw Lily clinging to Alexander.Alexander had been waiting here all day, but I hadn't paid him any mind. There were still too many financial losses and loopholes at the company that I needed to figure out."Alexander, please help me! A bunch of people just broke into my house.""They're demanding that all my assets be seized to compensate your company."Lily was sobbing, tears streaming down her face. Alexander tried to shake her off, but she wouldn't let go."I can't have my assets seized! I don't want to end up wandering the streets!"Lily cried, then spotted me stepping out of the elevator. She pointed at me and started screaming:"It's all your fault! Why did you sue me? Now I have to give up all my assets to your company!"I stared at her expressionlessly. Alexander immediately pulled her away."Joanna, she's lost it. Are you alright?"Yes, I was the one who filed the lawsuit. Both Lily and Alexander were requ

(Joanna's POV)Early the next morning, Alexander blocked my path with a stack of documents."Joanna, please listen to me. Lily deceived me.""She was already married. She only came looking for me after she found out our company had gone public."I pushed him aside and walked toward the company entrance."I already know all of that.""Whether she comes back or not doesn't matter. The point is — you abandoned me for someone else.""You postponed our wedding for her, leaving me alone to deal with the mess at the company.""You embezzled company funds for her, trying to destroy the company we built together."As I spoke, tears welled up in my eyes.I looked at Alexander's bloodshot eyes — he hadn't slept all night. His hair was a mess, his clothes wrinkled and disheveled. He knelt before me, begging for forgiveness."I was wrong. I did terrible things to you.""Let's have the wedding again. I'll change. I'll make it right.""I'll buy you new wedding dresses, new jewelry — everything."I ig

(Alexander's POV)I returned home feeling as though my soul had been ripped away, my mind completely blank. All the way back, I kept replaying everything that had happened at the meeting.I couldn't believe Joanna had actually driven me out of the company.I opened the door to an empty apartment.I tried to find the photo album of memories Joanna and I had shared, only to discover the cabinets had been completely emptied.Joanna's clothes, her makeup, her photographs — all gone.Only the trash can was overflowing.Stuffed full of the little gifts I had once given her. There was even a dried rose. I held it in my hand, its petals brittle and crumbling.I remembered — it was the first year we founded the company together, and funds had been especially tight. That Christmas, we'd been so strapped for cash that all I could afford was a rose for a few cents, as a Christmas gift.I never imagined she'd kept something so small all this time. Then there were photographs — memories of the two o

Alexander requested that a general shareholders' meeting be held in three days, saying he would announce his recovery plan.Over those three days, he took Lily to visit the offices of major clients one after another, trying to win back the partners who had wavered after the funding was cut off.Meanwhile, rumors about us began circulating throughout the company. In the break room, in the elevators, in the cafeteria during lunch — whispers were everywhere."Isn't that going too far? He's a co-founder, and they're actually going to fire him.""I heard Alexander went traveling with his first love, and Joanna got jealous and took it out on the company.""Really? Joanna always seems so rational...""Well, when a woman gets emotionally triggered, she's capable of anything."The moment I walked past, the crowd fell instantly silent, awkward smiles plastered on every face.I held my coffee cup and walked calmly into my office.Three days later, the shareholders' meeting convened as scheduled.

Alexander looked at me, then suddenly laughed."You want to fire me?"He grabbed the report and flipped through it casually."The project losses should be borne by the company — every shareholder has a stake in that.""So on what grounds are you reclaiming my shares?"Alexander glanced around the room, then turned to me with a hint of exasperation in his voice."Joanna, I know you've been throwing a tantrum because I spent these past few days with Lily.""But the company isn't the place to settle personal grudges, and we shouldn't bring our emotions into the workplace."He spoke so grandly, as if I were the one being unreasonable.Lily stepped out from behind him at just the right moment, tears streaming down her face."Joanna, this is all because of me."She placed the ring on the conference table and pushed it toward me, tears falling like beads."I'm just a dying woman. I shouldn't have clung to this warmth.""Alexander has been kind to me, but I overstepped — I've put him in a diff
