Chapter 2

Author: Milk Tea
The video was just over a minute long.

In it, my dad was clutching his chest, his hands shaking badly.

"Miss, please, my medication..."

Keira rolled her eyes and tossed his heart pills to the foot of the bed.

"Call Lena first. Tell her to finish the draw before she comes.

"The Lowells are holding the draw today. If she runs off, Spencer's the one who looks bad."

Dad's lips had gone white.

"Medicine..."

Someone nearby reached for the call button. Keira put out an arm and stopped them.

"Mind your own business."

The next second, Dad slid off the edge of the bed.

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen and didn't move for a long time.

Three years ago, during my second draw, the hospital called, and I ran out in tears.

Spencer came after me and wiped my eyes.

"Just ten more minutes. We can't break the rules."

Dad didn't make it those ten minutes.

Then Keira called, and Spencer left.

By the time he came back, I'd already signed the death certificate.

Another message popped up.

"Someone used my mother to threaten me back then. She passed away a few days ago. That's the only reason I'm finally reaching out."

I sent the video and the screenshots to my attorney, Daniel Reeves, and asked him to preserve the evidence.

When I went home to pack, the door code wouldn't work no matter what I tried.

I thought of how easily Keira had unlocked Spencer's phone and punched in 1224.

Beep.

The door opened.

It was her birthday.

Her sneakers sat in the entryway. A game controller lay tossed on the couch.

In the bedroom, my clothes had been shoved into a corner. Her pajamas hung right beside Spencer's shirts.

When the house was first finished, Spencer wouldn't even let his drunk childhood friends crash here.

He'd said, "This is our home. No one else stays here."

Apparently, "no one else" had exceptions.

I'd just zipped my suitcase when Keira walked in.

"You're actually leaving, Lena?

"It's just a marriage certificate. Is it really that big a deal?"

I held the video up in front of her.

Her expression stiffened for a moment.

"What's some crappy video supposed to prove?

"Your dad had bad luck. Don't pin it on me. He had to go and have an emergency on the day of the Lowell draw. If anything, I'm the one who got jinxed."

Spencer walked in carrying my favorite soup.

When he saw I was barefoot, he set my slippers down at my feet.

"You're pregnant. Can't you at least look out for the baby?"

I didn't move.

"Did you change the door code?"

He sounded impatient.

"Her place is being renovated, so she's staying here a few days. She hates carrying keys, so I changed it while I was at it.

"It's just a code. Don't blow it out of proportion."

Keira leaned against the fridge, smiling.

"Lena, sometimes Spencer works late and doesn't make it back to the estate to be with you. As his bro, somebody's got to keep an eye on him, right?

"Just remember my birthday, and you can get in, no problem."

It was absurd.

An outsider was teaching me how to get into my own home.

I pushed my phone toward Spencer.

"I gave the video to my attorney."

He didn't even look up.

"Withdraw it.

"The wedding's next week. Keira can't get into trouble, and the Lowells can't afford the embarrassment."

"So my dad's life has to make way for the wedding?"

"Lena, I'm giving you a chance to back down.

"Don't use a dead man to pressure me."

I nodded.

"I'm not withdrawing it."

Keira lunged for my phone.

I jerked back, and my lower back slammed into the dining table. A sharp cramp seized my belly.

Blood quickly soaked through the hem of my dress.

Spencer's face changed. He started to bend down to pick me up.

But Keira covered her mouth.

"Spencer, I'm dizzy..."

He froze for a few seconds. In the end, he helped me onto the couch, then turned and lifted Keira into his arms.

"You've always been the healthy one. Don't compete with her over this.

"I'll get her downstairs first."

The door shut.

I called 911 myself.

In the ambulance, my director, Grace Holloway, emailed me for the third time about the European assignment.

This time, I didn't say no.

Thousands of miles away in Europe, I hadn't thought about either of them in a long time.I'd just finished presenting a new project when Grace slid an appointment letter across the table."We'd like you to head up our European division."Interested?"I looked at the name on it and picked up a pen."Yes."When I came out after signing, Simon was leaning by the door, waiting for me.He seemed unusually awkward today."Are you free tonight?""Team dinner?"He smiled. "No."Just dinner with you."I looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "Are you asking me out?""Pretty obvious, right?""Dinner's fine. Anything else, I'm not considering for now.""Okay."He answered without hesitation and didn't press any further. We'd just reached the restaurant entrance when I stopped.Spencer was standing across the street.I hadn't seen him in half a year, and he'd lost a lot of weight. He noticed me and slowly walked over."Lena, I'm going home tomorrow."I won't... be coming back."

I looked up at him.Spencer had gone pale."After I got the certificate with Keira last year, I couldn't risk you drawing a favorable token."My grandmother wouldn't let me divorce. She said it would affect the board transition."I figured once I'd secured my position, I'd divorce her and then marry you properly."His voice grew quieter and quieter toward the end.I suddenly laughed."Spencer, don't you think it's ridiculous to say all this now?"His lips moved."You couldn't give up your power in the Lowell family, so you married Keira."You didn't want to let me go, so you gave me a wedding."You even decided the result of my fifth draw for me."You say you love me, but you never once asked whether I wanted any of the things you did."Spencer's eyes grew wet. This time, he didn't defend himself. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his voice low."I always thought that as long as you were the one I married in the end, I wasn't really letting you down."I even thou

My first month in Europe, I barely got six hours of sleep a night. My first project was renovating an old hotel, and I was in charge of updating the public spaces.I spent my days in meetings, taking measurements, and revising drawings, and my nights back at my apartment sorting through materials.Grace knew I'd just had surgery and offered to let me rest for a few days first.I shook my head. "I can do it."Over the past seven years, I'd turned down two overseas assignments to accommodate Spencer. The first was during the third year's draw. The second was after we started trying for a baby.Spencer always used to say that once we were married, I could do whatever I wanted. But once I actually got here, I realized I didn't need to wait on anyone's promise.Whatever I wanted, I could build myself. There was a colleague on the project team named Simon Dorsey who ran the construction site. The first time he borrowed my laptop to look at the drawings, he made a point of asking

Spencer read the letter three times.Three years ago, after my dad died, he was the one who personally told the hospital to hold off on releasing the security footage. He was also the one who had someone pull the nurses' records from that day. He'd never forgotten any of it.He'd always told himself the truth would only hurt me more. But only today did he finally admit it.He was the one who'd never been able to face it.He was afraid that if I learned the truth, it would expose his so-called "just friends" thing with Keira for what it really was.He was even more afraid that I'd leave him and hate him for it.When Spencer got home, Keira was packing. She was hurling her clothes into a suitcase one by one."What, Lena runs off, and now you remember to take it out on me?"Spencer tossed the letter onto the coffee table."The hospital's going to pull the original records."Keira glanced at it and scoffed."Let them. I wasn't the only one who handled things back then."She

The wedding venue erupted into chaos.Keira reacted first."It's just an overseas assignment. It's not like she's never coming back. She's just mad you didn't go after her."Lowell, if you go after her right now, she'll definitely come back."Spencer ignored her, grabbed his car keys, and left.He drove straight home. The house was so quiet it made him uneasy.Half the closet was empty. My clothes, my laptop, my documents—all gone. All that remained on the entry table was the house key I'd used for seven years.A note was tucked underneath it."No need to change the code."Spencer stared at that line. Then something came back to him, and he pulled up the number for the hospital's department head."What actually happened when Lena was admitted the other day?"There was a brief silence on the line."Mr. Lowell, the baby didn't make it."Spencer went rigid, rooted to the spot."What did you say?""We tried to reach you many times the night of the surgery, but no one answ

The day before the wedding, I collected the baby's ashes and carried the small white porcelain urn to the cemetery. But as I got closer, I stopped dead.Someone had dug up Dad's grave. His headstone lay toppled in the mud, and his memorial photo was covered in footprints.Keira stood under Spencer's umbrella, hurrying the workers along.I rushed over."Who said you could touch my dad?"Keira turned around."Lena, the Lowells had their spiritual advisor take a look. Your dad died the night of an unfavorable draw, and that's bad luck for the whole family."You started spotting again the other day, so Eleanor wants the grave moved before the wedding. Just for peace of mind."I planted myself in front of the workers."Stop!"Spencer yanked me away."We're only moving the grave. I already bought the best plot there is."I wrenched free."This is my father! Touch him, and I'm calling the police!"Spencer's jaw tightened."Keira's been running around doing all this for you, an
