Chapter 4

Author: Milk Tea
The day before the wedding, I collected the baby's ashes and carried the small white porcelain urn to the cemetery.

But as I got closer, I stopped dead.

Someone had dug up Dad's grave. His headstone lay toppled in the mud, and his memorial photo was covered in footprints.

Keira stood under Spencer's umbrella, hurrying the workers along.

I rushed over.

"Who said you could touch my dad?"

Keira turned around.

"Lena, the Lowells had their spiritual advisor take a look. Your dad died the night of an unfavorable draw, and that's bad luck for the whole family.

"You started spotting again the other day, so Eleanor wants the grave moved before the wedding. Just for peace of mind."

I planted myself in front of the workers.

"Stop!"

Spencer yanked me away.

"We're only moving the grave. I already bought the best plot there is."

I wrenched free.

"This is my father! Touch him, and I'm calling the police!"

Spencer's jaw tightened.

"Keira's been running around doing all this for you, and you can't even say thank you? You show up and throw a fit. Look at yourself!"

As he spoke, he dragged me back again.

The workers scrambled to get out of our way, and the urn holding Dad's ashes slammed into the headstone and cracked open.

Most of his ashes spilled into the muddy water.

"Dad!"

I threw myself down and frantically scooped them back up.

The rain came down harder. The ashes mixed with mud kept slipping through my fingers.

Keira glanced down.

"It's already like this. Can't you just get a new urn?"

Spencer came to pull me up, but I held the white porcelain urn tight against my chest.

"What's that?"

"The baby."

He looked confused.

"The baby's gone."

Spencer froze. Then his expression darkened.

"The doctor said everything was stable a few days ago.

"The wedding's tomorrow. Don't use the baby to test my limits."

Keira held out her hand. "Let me see."

I backed away.

"Don't touch it."

She stepped toward me again, and Spencer clamped a hand around my wrist.

"Let her take a look so you two can put this to rest."

I pulled away on instinct.

The porcelain urn slipped from my arms and shattered on the ground.

The baby's ashes scattered over Dad's photo, and the rain washed them away in an instant.

I knelt in the mud, gathering them up by the handful.

My palms were covered in gray water.

Suddenly, I couldn't tell which part was Dad and which part was my baby.

I shoved Keira hard.

Spencer grabbed me.

"Enough!"

He looked down at me kneeling in the mud, his voice cold and hard.

"Since you're already on your knees, apologize to Keira for laying hands on her.

"The wedding's still on tomorrow.

"I'll act like today never happened."

I looked at him for a long time.

So Dad being gone could be treated like it never happened.

So could the baby.

As long as I put on the wedding dress, everything could be swept under the rug.

In that moment, I finally heard something inside me snap.

"I'm sorry..."

Spencer's face finally softened.

As he helped Keira away, he turned back to add a reminder.

"Don't stay out in the rain too long. You'll feel awful tomorrow if you catch a cold."

I stayed at the cemetery until dawn.

The next day, the wedding venue was packed with guests.

Spencer had the bridal suite turned up two degrees and canceled the champagne toasts.

"Lena gets cold easily, and she can't wear herself out."

At 9:30, I still hadn't shown up.

Keira leaned against the doorframe.

"She's not actually skipping it, is she?"

Spencer looked down, adjusting his cuff links.

"She's pulled this plenty of times. When has she ever actually left?

"She won't last three days without me."

At 10:15, I turned off my phone and walked through the gate at Logan.

At 10:30, a sudden, inexplicable dread hit Spencer, and he sent his assistant, Tyler Brooks, to pick me up.

In the end, Tyler ran in, white as a sheet.

"Mr. Lowell, Ms. Wardell applied for a long-term overseas assignment.

"The paperwork's already done. She was on a flight this morning."

The ring box in Spencer's hand hit the floor with a sharp clack.

By then, my plane was already in the air.

Thousands of miles away in Europe, I hadn't thought about either of them in a long time.I'd just finished presenting a new project when Grace slid an appointment letter across the table."We'd like you to head up our European division."Interested?"I looked at the name on it and picked up a pen."Yes."When I came out after signing, Simon was leaning by the door, waiting for me.He seemed unusually awkward today."Are you free tonight?""Team dinner?"He smiled. "No."Just dinner with you."I looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "Are you asking me out?""Pretty obvious, right?""Dinner's fine. Anything else, I'm not considering for now.""Okay."He answered without hesitation and didn't press any further. We'd just reached the restaurant entrance when I stopped.Spencer was standing across the street.I hadn't seen him in half a year, and he'd lost a lot of weight. He noticed me and slowly walked over."Lena, I'm going home tomorrow."I won't... be coming back."

I looked up at him.Spencer had gone pale."After I got the certificate with Keira last year, I couldn't risk you drawing a favorable token."My grandmother wouldn't let me divorce. She said it would affect the board transition."I figured once I'd secured my position, I'd divorce her and then marry you properly."His voice grew quieter and quieter toward the end.I suddenly laughed."Spencer, don't you think it's ridiculous to say all this now?"His lips moved."You couldn't give up your power in the Lowell family, so you married Keira."You didn't want to let me go, so you gave me a wedding."You even decided the result of my fifth draw for me."You say you love me, but you never once asked whether I wanted any of the things you did."Spencer's eyes grew wet. This time, he didn't defend himself. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his voice low."I always thought that as long as you were the one I married in the end, I wasn't really letting you down."I even thou

My first month in Europe, I barely got six hours of sleep a night. My first project was renovating an old hotel, and I was in charge of updating the public spaces.I spent my days in meetings, taking measurements, and revising drawings, and my nights back at my apartment sorting through materials.Grace knew I'd just had surgery and offered to let me rest for a few days first.I shook my head. "I can do it."Over the past seven years, I'd turned down two overseas assignments to accommodate Spencer. The first was during the third year's draw. The second was after we started trying for a baby.Spencer always used to say that once we were married, I could do whatever I wanted. But once I actually got here, I realized I didn't need to wait on anyone's promise.Whatever I wanted, I could build myself. There was a colleague on the project team named Simon Dorsey who ran the construction site. The first time he borrowed my laptop to look at the drawings, he made a point of asking

Spencer read the letter three times.Three years ago, after my dad died, he was the one who personally told the hospital to hold off on releasing the security footage. He was also the one who had someone pull the nurses' records from that day. He'd never forgotten any of it.He'd always told himself the truth would only hurt me more. But only today did he finally admit it.He was the one who'd never been able to face it.He was afraid that if I learned the truth, it would expose his so-called "just friends" thing with Keira for what it really was.He was even more afraid that I'd leave him and hate him for it.When Spencer got home, Keira was packing. She was hurling her clothes into a suitcase one by one."What, Lena runs off, and now you remember to take it out on me?"Spencer tossed the letter onto the coffee table."The hospital's going to pull the original records."Keira glanced at it and scoffed."Let them. I wasn't the only one who handled things back then."She

The wedding venue erupted into chaos.Keira reacted first."It's just an overseas assignment. It's not like she's never coming back. She's just mad you didn't go after her."Lowell, if you go after her right now, she'll definitely come back."Spencer ignored her, grabbed his car keys, and left.He drove straight home. The house was so quiet it made him uneasy.Half the closet was empty. My clothes, my laptop, my documents—all gone. All that remained on the entry table was the house key I'd used for seven years.A note was tucked underneath it."No need to change the code."Spencer stared at that line. Then something came back to him, and he pulled up the number for the hospital's department head."What actually happened when Lena was admitted the other day?"There was a brief silence on the line."Mr. Lowell, the baby didn't make it."Spencer went rigid, rooted to the spot."What did you say?""We tried to reach you many times the night of the surgery, but no one answ
