Chapter 5

Author: Daphne
By the time Julian reached the riverbank, the search had been underway for three full hours, and rain streamed over him. The head of the rescue team kept his voice controlled. "The water is extremely cold, and the current is violent. Without protective equipment, the odds of surviving more than an hour are negligible."

Julian stood in the rain without moving. Marcus came up under an umbrella and reminded him quietly that the hearing was still waiting on Hartwell's evidence.

Julian spun toward him, his voice absolute. "Hand over all of it."

"Including every raw server log?"

"All of it."

Hours after the logs were filed, the investigators withdrew the primary allegation against Evelyn and formally opened a case against Claire's public relations team. Julian sat in the car staring at the receipt and only then grasped a brutal truth.

One single document. If he had been willing to release it, Evelyn would never have endured that entire night of questioning nor had her passport seized at the hearing. It was not that he lacked the power. He had simply always assumed she could wait a little longer.

The next day he went to her apartment. He opened the door onto rooms so empty it was as though no one had ever lived there. Five labeled boxes stood on the floor, and a complete handover list lay open on the kitchen counter with every item signed off.

She had not walked out in a temper. She had prepared, carefully and completely, to leave.

Marcus turned up more of it quickly. Luggage shipped to Maine a month earlier, a booked flight, the confirmation releasing the Bennett family's debt, and the additional clauses of that marriage agreement from four years ago.

Julian stared at the end of the agreement. Evelyn had secured exactly one thing for herself: once Hartwell Group gained control, the Reed family had to release every debt owed by the Bennett family. No property, no shares, no assets added during the marriage. She had never once asked for a cent of divorce compensation either.

For four years he had believed Evelyn worked that hard because she could not let go of him. She took the difficult hotel projects, stood at the podium through storms of coverage, went down keeping reporters back during a protest and took more than a dozen stitches in her arm.

It finally dawned on him. The harder she worked, the faster he consolidated his control of the group. The more successful he became, the sooner Evelyn could break free.

That afternoon Julian went to the hospital. Sophie still could not get out of bed, and the first thing she said when he came in was, "Where is Evelyn?"

His throat tightened. He forced out the words. "She hasn't been found."

Sophie closed her eyes and was silent a long time.

"Every cost of your treatment and rehabilitation is on me," Julian said quietly.

"That is the least you should be doing."

"About Evelyn—"

Sophie opened her eyes and looked at him. "Even now, do you still think she was waiting for you to come around?"

Julian had no answer.

"She was never waiting." Sophie sounded exhausted. "For four solid years, she was counting down: until Hartwell Group was stable, until the contract expired, until the Bennett family's debt was erased.

"Your problem was never loving the wrong person." Sophie looked straight at him. "It's that you habitually put whoever endures the most and gives way the most dead last."

The words struck his heart like a blade delayed four years.

That night, Julian ordered every step of his engagement to Claire suspended. Claire stormed into his office with a scornful laugh.

"Just because of Evelyn?"

Julian did not deny it.

"She's gone." Claire stared at him. "Who are you trying to impress by taking her side now?"

Julian stood at the window gazing out at the lights of New York and felt a bone-deep, suffocating emptiness for the first time.

Hundreds of miles away, Evelyn lay in a clinic bed. A nurse held out a temporary phone and she did not take it at once. She checked with Noah first. "Who knows this number?"

"Only your doctor and me."

Only then did she take it. A camera shutter clicked in the corridor, and Evelyn's shoulders went rigid. Noah asked nothing. He went over and closed the door, shutting out the world beyond it.

She did not contact Julian. She went straight to an independent lawyer to confirm two things. Sophie was alive, and the server logs had been filed. When the answers came, she was quiet for a long time and then said softly to Noah, "Let's go."

This time she crossed a state line and left Julian not a single trace of where she had gone.

Early the next morning came the judgment in Claire's case. She was found liable for fabricating evidence, obstructing the investigation, and related civil claims. Robert Reed was permanently pushed out of the highest business circles, and the Reed family could never again use its influence to force Evelyn into marriage.Julian did not come to say goodbye in person. His lawyer delivered a final set of signed documents. Hartwell permanently abandoned any acquisition of the block where Bennett Restoration stood. The seaside hotel would be co-managed with the local historic preservation trust. Evelyn was formally released from every non-disclosure agreement she had signed. No Hartwell employee was permitted to investigate, follow, or approach Evelyn or her family in a private capacity. The townhouse, which had changed hands several times, had been sold, and every dollar of the proceeds went into the accessibility design fund Sophie managed herself.Evelyn read all of it and signed the rece

After the hearing closed, Julian had his lawyer send three documents. The first compensated Evelyn for the equity value lost through four years of severely undervalued work. The second fully restored her joint credit on every project she had worked on. The third established an accessibility design fund under Sophie's sole control, with Hartwell providing the money, taking no naming rights and no part in running it.Evelyn read through every document word for word and calmly signed to accept what she had earned through her own labor. She did not have to turn down every cent to prove she understood the full picture. Part of the money went into an education trust for Lily, and the rest went toward running the studio. When the last hearing ended, Sophie pushed open the meeting room door herself from her wheelchair. When Evelyn saw her again after three years, her eyes reddened. She did not rush forward to hug her. She crouched first and checked that the wheelchair brakes were locked.Sophi

Three hours after the story broke, reporters were already blocking the studio door, and a photograph of Lily had been published online. Evelyn's palms went cold the moment she saw it. She did not care what anyone said about her, but the photograph showed Lily's face clearly.Rumors spread everywhere. "Did Evelyn Reed stage her own disappearance three years ago?" "Did the Bennett family help her conceal her identity and evade the investigation?" A number of longtime clients, afraid of being dragged into Hartwell's scandal, canceled their contracts.Back at the house Evelyn dragged out a suitcase that had sat untouched for years and started packing documents and clothes. Noah watched her."Moving again?""The reporters have Lily in their sights.""Where?""Away from here, for now."For the past three years, this had been her most familiar response: whenever danger appeared, she changed her number, her home, and her city. Halfway through packing, Lily ran over with a drawing and solemnly

A week later, the studio received notice from the bank. The debt on its commercial loan, which was about to be renewed, had been purchased by a Hartwell financial subsidiary. When Evelyn finished reading the email, her first reaction was not fear but a wave of fury. Three years earlier, Julian had tried to decide when she was allowed to leave New York. Now his reach extended to Noah, Lily, and the studio she had poured her heart into. She called the bank to confirm, and the voice on the other end was courteous. "Hartwell is offering a lower interest rate and a longer repayment period."Evelyn asked, "What if I repay the entire loan early?""You can, but there would be an early repayment penalty.""Send me the breakdown."She hung up and called Noah into the office."Roughly how much could we recover if we sold off our equipment?"Noah looked at her. "You're planning to move?""Yes.""Where to?""Further north, or back to Canada."Noah did not tell her to calm down. He turned the laptop

The day after the reunion Julian asked to speak with her alone. Evelyn agreed only to the studio's meeting room, with the glass door open and Noah and the staff in the room next door.Julian took in the arrangement and said nothing about it."Why didn't you tell me you were alive?"Her hand paused on the file. "Tell you what?""That you were alive.""Why would I owe you that?""I looked for you for three years.""That was your choice.""Evelyn.""Julian, three years ago, when I was under investigation, you had the raw logs, the lawyers, and all the authority you needed. Every single time, you had the power to protect me. Every single time, you told me to wait and said you would deal with it later." Evelyn raised her eyes to him."I dealt with Claire," Julian said."I know.""Her team was investigated, Hartwell ended all business with the Reed family, and Sophie's treatment was fully funded—""Those things should have happened anyway." There was no edge in Evelyn's voice. "I also know y

On the day the Hartwell project team arrived in Camden, the wind came hard off the sea. Julian got to the seaside hotel half an hour early. It had stood empty for more than ten years, and salt corrosion had left its exterior walls mottled. The project manager handed him the partner file. "The best-regarded local restoration firm is Bennett Restoration. The lead partner is Noah Bennett, and the other partner is listed as E. Bennett."Julian skimmed the page. Five minutes before the meeting, the door opened and a woman walked in carrying a roll of drawings.Julian's hand went rigid on the table. It was Evelyn.Three years of search records, the police report declaring her missing, the scarf recovered from the river. Every settled fact collapsed in that second. She stood in the doorway with her hair cut short, wearing an old denim jacket and not a trace of makeup. Evelyn saw him too. Her heart dropped, and her fingers tightened around the drawings before she could stop them. The first thi
