Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Starry
I moved on instinct to grab Sandra, but she lost her footing and slammed onto the floor.

"Mom… My baby…"

She curled up, groaning. A dark stain spread beneath the white fabric of her dress, soaking through inch by inch.

Margaret screamed, "She's bleeding! Get her to the hospital!"

Caleb didn't wait. He lifted Sandra and rushed for the door.

Logan followed, then turned back at the exit and pointed at me.

"If anything happens to her, you're done!"

They were gone in seconds. The room fell quiet.

Dad crouched down, picking up the pieces of the phone Caleb had smashed. His back was to me as he wiped his eyes.

"How did it end up like this… Asher, you're not going through with the wedding? This is on me. My health put you in this position."

He pushed himself up along the wall, slow and unsteady. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he pressed one hand to his side and his whole body trembled.

My chest tightened.

In my last life, his condition crashed that night, and the pain had him thrashing on the floor. Now, it was happening even earlier.

I didn't hesitate. I stepped in and held him steady.

"Dad, none of that matters. We're going to the hospital. We'll pay today and get you scheduled as soon as possible."

He shook his head and tried to push me away. "I'm fine. It's just a cramp. Don't waste the money. Save it and find someone better…"

"No." I didn't back down. "We're going."

I flagged a cab and headed straight for the hospital.

I handled registration and the tests, moving back and forth between counters until I finally got him into a private room.

When the results came back, the doctor said Dad was stable and cleared for surgery. They could take him first thing in the morning.

The pressure in my chest finally eased.

I took the card with the 300 thousand and went to pay. When the payment cleared, my eyes burned.

Last time, he died in that hallway because we didn't have this money.

This time, no one was touching it.

I left him in the room and went downstairs to get food. The moment I stepped outside, I found the Crowes waiting.

Sandra had a bandage wrapped around her head. She saw me and came straight at me, hand raised.

"Asher, you killed my baby. You owe me!"

Margaret swung a thermos at my head.

"You piece of trash! You shoved her into that table and killed my grandchild! You're not leaving until you answer for it!"

Logan stepped in and drove his foot into my stomach.

"If you don't come up with a million today, your sick dad won't make it through the night!"

He shoved his phone in my face, already live, shouting into the camera.

"Everyone, take a look! He dumped his wife and beat her until she lost the baby!"

People slowed down, watching and whispering. I knocked Logan's hand aside and pulled out my dad's phone.

"You all know whose kid that was. The miscarriage has nothing to do with me. Stop this now, or I'm calling the police."

"You think that helps you?"

Sandra laughed, sharp and unsteady.

"The baby's gone, and you have no proof left. I say you did it, and that's all anyone's going to hear. When the cops show up, they'll take you!"

I looked at her, then raised the phone in front of her face.

"Then take a look at this."

Emma turned to me. "It's negative. You're fine."I took the report and stared at that word for a long moment. The tension finally drained out of me. My legs went weak, and I dropped into the chair.Even now, Sandra still managed to take one last swing at me.The next morning, Dad was wheeled into surgery.Mom and I waited outside. Emma was leading it herself. Three hours later, the light above the operating room went out.Emma walked out, looking at ease."The surgery went well. As long as there's no rejection, he should be fine."Mom and I held onto each other, both of us tearing up."Thank you. Really. Dinner's on me tonight.""I'm just doing my job." She smiled, then added, "Honestly, if my mentor hadn't gotten sick, I wouldn't have taken this case. A transplant like this is a big deal for me, too. So thank you for trusting me."She tilted her head, a small smile in her eyes.I paused. That explained it. The doctor this time wasn't the same as in my past life. By sheer

Emma said, "Noah, this is Asher. His dad's been taken. We need your help."Noah gave a quick nod."Alright. Get in."The SUVs pulled out, heading straight for the abandoned chemical plant on the edge of the city.On the way, Noah handed me a walkie-talkie."When we get there, you go in first. Keep them talking. Stall. We'll come in from the back. Wait for my signal. When I call it, move aside."I nodded. My palms were already damp.Forty minutes later, we rolled up outside the plant.I pushed the door open and stepped inside. The warehouse was dim. Dad was tied to a chair in the middle of the floor. When he saw me, he shook his head hard.Logan and Margaret stood on either side, a knife pressed against his throat."Where's the money?" Logan stepped forward, hand outstretched."I didn't bring cash. I can transfer it."I pulled out my phone, moving slowly, waiting for Noah's signal."Transfer? I said cash. Did you call the cops?"Margaret rushed over, snatched my phone, a

I had just sat down when a news alert popped up on my phone.I tapped it open, and my breath stalled.Someone had taken clips from the canceled wedding, cut them together, and pushed them online with a headline that twisted everything.[Groom Cheats Before Wedding, Dumps Girlfriend of 10 Years, Leaves Her With Nothing After Miscarriage!]The video only showed Sandra crying and the moment I tossed the ring into the trash. There was nothing about her demanding 300 thousand or about her carrying Caleb's baby. The comments were already blowing up.[This guy's trash. Ten years together, and he walks away like that?][How much of her life can a woman afford to give? Even if she cheated, you don't do that to someone!][Let's find this guy. He's not getting away with it!]I stepped out of the room, splashed cold water on my face, and forced myself to steady my breathing.I was about to respond when a scream came from inside. I shoved the door open and ran back in.Mom was on the fl

"It won't work," Emma said. "That drug is tightly controlled. Even if another hospital has it, they won't just hand it over. And the fastest they could transfer it would be tomorrow afternoon. That's too late for a morning surgery."My head went blank. I nearly lost my balance.Last time, Dad died because we didn't have the money. This time, we had the money, and now the medication was gone. The anger kept rising.Sandra… I was done letting her hide.I pulled out my phone and called her.She picked up right away, laughing, as if she had been waiting."Looking for the meds? Can't find them, can you?"My jaw tightened. "Where is it? If anything happens to my dad, you won't get away with it!""Oh, listen to you. Want the meds? Fine."She paused, savoring it."Come to the back entrance. Apologize to me and pay me one million for emotional damages. Do that, and you'll get it back. Otherwise, start planning a funeral."She hung up after that.I turned toward the door."Don't."

Emma looked at me and said gently, "Your dad's stable for now, but he's not out of danger. Try not to upset him again."I wiped Mom's tears and had her stay by my dad's side. "Mom, I need to take care of something. I'll be back."The moment I stepped into the hallway, I saw Caleb leaning against the far wall, grinning."What's wrong? Your old man still hanging on?"I closed the distance in a few strides, grabbed his collar, and slammed him into the wall. He grabbed his head, blood starting to show, his jaw tight with pain."You really think you can hit me in public?""Watch me."I drove my knee into his gut."You pulled my dad's oxygen line. That's attempted murder! You sleep with Sandra, get her pregnant, then try to dump it on me? You think I'm raising your kid? This is nothing!"I pulled back to swing again.Footsteps echoed down the hall. Several officers were coming our way.Caleb stiffened, staring at me. "You actually called the police?""I did."Emma's voice came f

The security footage from the ballroom told the whole story. Sandra slipped and went down on her own.I never touched her.Sandra's face drained of color as she shook her head. "That's impossible! I asked the hotel. There aren't any cameras back there!""I set one up myself," I told her. "I wanted to film the whole day. Didn't think it'd end up saving me."I slid the phone back into my pocket and looked at her.The crowd had seen enough. Voices started to rise."So he didn't even touch her. She fell and tried to blame him.""Unbelievable. She brought that act all the way to the hospital.""She was screaming abuse a minute ago. That's low."Margaret pulled Sandra in and started wailing. "This is fake! You edited that video! You're trying to get out of it!"I kept my hand in my pocket and watched Sandra unravel. "Fine. We'll let the police take a look."The moment I mentioned the police, Logan's tone shifted. "What kind of man are you? My daughter just lost her baby, and you d
