NORA

Monday morning arrived quickly.

By six-thirty, Marta had already taken over the kitchen.

Uniforms hung neatly over the backs of two chairs. Lunch containers sat in a row on the counter, two water bottles waited beside them.

Lena bounced onto her stool before I finished pouring my first cup, her new backpack was already on her shoulders.

"Mama, do you think Frances will like rabbits?"

I looked up from my coffee.

"Who is Frances?"

"The friend I'm going to make today."

She tore a piece of toa

NORADoctor Mack's office occupied the far end of the hospital's wing. The hallway outside carried framed photographs that Doctor Mack appeared in most of them.Somewhere along the way, the hospital had named an entire wing after him.The door stood open when I arrived. His assistant showed me without asking my name.Doctor Mack was seated behind his desk when I entered.Age had bent his shoulders slightly, but his eyes remained clear behind a pair of reading glasses resting low on his nose.An old file sat open in front of him.His eyes moved to me. "Ms Beaumont." He said and I nodded. Doctor Mack leaned back slightly, and gestured for me to sit.“It's good to finally see you here face to face,” He said.I smiled."After three years of emails, I suppose it was long overdue.”"I have someone looking into her medical history." My fingers settled on my laps. For several seconds he looked down at the file on his desk, then he opened it fully."I kept this." His hand rested against one

The light in Theo's room was off and that didn't stop Lena from talking. Theo lay on his back staring at the ceiling while his sister moved beneath her blanket she brought to his room for what felt like the hundredth time. Sleep was far from the two of them. The birthday had ended more than twenty-four hours ago, but unfortunately, Lena's brain had not. "Dad was angry." Theo kept his eyes on the ceiling. "A little." Lena rolled onto her side. "No." Her blanket slid halfway to the floor. "He was really angry." Theo finally looked toward her. The moonlight from the window caught part of her face. Because she was right; Daniel rarely raised his voice. They had spent their entire lives around Daniel and knew the difference between his laughter, his exhaustion, and the voice he used when he was trying not to laugh. Sunday morning had sounded different. Lena pulled her pillow closer. "And do you notice they stopped talking when we came inside from the garden." Theo looked

NORAMarcus stared at me for a second before taking a few steps closer."Nora."I tightened my grip on my bag and nodded."Marcus."His eyes moved over me briefly before settling on my face again."What are you doing here?""I have an appointment."His brow furrowed slightly. "Here?"I glanced toward the elevators behind me."That's usually how hospital appointments work."One corner of his mouth lifted, the smile disappeared almost immediately."I saw you on television."I raised an eyebrow. "That sounds dangerous."Marcus folded his arms. "Beaumont chairman."The title sounded strange coming from him."You change a lot Nora," His gaze remained steady. "I wouldn't have thought."A smile touched my mouth. "What did you think?"Marcus looked away briefly.People crossed the garage behind us. An elevator opened somewhere nearby, when his eyes returned to mine, the answer still hadn't arrived."I don't know."That sounded more honest than anything else he could have said.I adjusted my b

NORAThe answer arrived before I had time to think about it."No."The word left my mouth immediately.Daniel’s eyes remained on mine.I looked away first. When I finally looked back, that same faint smile remained on his face."Okay."That was all he said.~~~Monday morning arrived.By the time I came downstairs, Daniel's suitcase was already beside the front door. The twins had positioned themselves nearby as though remaining close to the luggage might somehow prevent him from leaving. It wasn't working.Lena seemed aware of that fact. She simply refused to accept it."You could stay another day, dad."Daniel adjusted the handle of his suitcase."I could."Lena brightened immediately."Great.""But I'm not going to."Her shoulders dropped."That was unnecessary."Theo stood beside her with both hands in his pockets.Unlike Lena, he wasn't arguing. That usually meant he disliked something more than she did.Daniel crouched in front of them."I'll call when I get home."Lena folded h

NORASunday morning arrived with far less noise than the day before. The garden visible through the breakfast room windows still carried evidence of the party. A cluster of balloons remained tangled against one hedge, and several folding tables waited to be collected from the lawn.Inside, the house had already settled into its usual rhythm.Daniel sat at the table with a mug of coffee beside him while Theo helped organize documents that would eventually find their way back into a suitcase.Whether Daniel actually needed help remained unclear.Theo appeared to consider himself essential to the process.Lena occupied the opposite end of the table and was describing three unrelated events simultaneously."...and then Sophie dropped the balloon, and Grandfather said it wasn't his fault, but it was definitely his fault because he was holding too many things at once, and Theo said—""It wasn't definitely his fault." Theo adjusted another stack of papers before looking up. "You don't have e

CHARLIEThe party had already begun to thin out by the time I reached the driveway.Several families were leaving. Children carried balloons nearly as large as they were, and parents balanced gifts, jackets, and leftover slices of cake while trying to herd everyone toward their cars.I had almost reached mine when I heard footsteps sounding behind me."Charlie, can you drop me?"I stopped.Celeste caught up a second later. Her hand moved to her wrist, the exact spot where Nora had grabbed her earlier. My eyes dropped to it, then I looked away."I thought you came with your parents."Her hand fell away from her wrist."I did."I glanced toward the driveway entrance where several cars were already pulling away."Go with them. I need to drop my mum.”Celeste looked at me for a moment, her eyes confused, and then she nodded."All right."I waited until she stepped back before turning away.My eyes drifted to the garden; Lena stood near the pathway with one of her hands buried inside Danie
