Chapter 2

Author: Dyeing
Vera called again and again.

When Ethan finally answered, he snapped impatiently, “Tell Julie not to contact me again until she apologizes!”

Then he turned off his phone.

At the police officer’s suggestion, Vera went to the house looking for him.

The housekeeper told her Ethan had taken Mia on a trip around the world.

With no family member willing to come forward, the case eventually went cold, and my body remained at the funeral home.

Vera paid the storage fees for five years, waiting for Ethan and Mia to return.

She thought I could finally be buried beside our parents, just as I’d wanted.

Instead, Ethan accused her of lying and helping me put on an elaborate act.

Rain poured from the sky.

Vera stayed there crying until dawn, her eyes swollen and raw.

Only then did she brush her wet bangs from her face and go home.

Once inside, she walked numbly to her bed and pulled a diary from the cabinet.

She quickly wrapped it, called a courier, and had it delivered to Ethan’s company.

Watching the courier disappear into the distance, she closed her eyes.

“Julie, this is all I can do for you.”

I followed the diary to my brother’s company.

Inside his office, his assistant handed it to him.

“Mr. Cole, you received a package. It’s a diary.

“Vera sent it.”

Ethan didn’t look up from the documents he was skimming.

“Read it to me.”

The assistant opened the diary to the first page and began reading in a serious voice.

“January 3, 2020. Today, my brother threw me out of the house.”

The temperature in the office seemed to drop.

Ethan finally looked up, mockery flashing in his eyes.

“So this is what they’re trying now? Interesting. Keep reading.”

The assistant nodded and continued.

Today, my brother threw me out of the house.

Because I slapped Mia.

She saw the paperwork confirming my depression diagnosis and gave me a vicious smile.

“You should’ve ended up like this a long time ago. Why didn’t you die in that earthquake with your parents?

“Then Ethan would belong to me alone!”

I almost laughed.

She was only a girl Ethan had financially supported. She wasn’t related to either of us.

What gave her the right to think my brother belonged to her?

I ignored her, so she knocked my jewelry box to the floor.

Inside was the family photo I’d hidden away.

Before I could stop her, Mia snatched it up and tore it to pieces.

Furious, I slapped her.

But she was stronger than me. She quickly pinned me to the floor and made me watch as she dumped my antidepressants into the toilet and flushed them away.

When Ethan came home, she immediately twisted the story. She claimed I’d hit her and tried to force her out of the house.

The way he looked at me was so cold.

His lips tightened before he said, “Do you still want to live in this house? If you do, apologize to Mia.”

I pretended I was going to leave, hoping he would stop me.

Instead, he took all my cash, bank cards, and identification.

He wouldn’t even let me take my clothes.

“If you’re leaving, then everything I gave you stays here.

“Tomorrow, I’ll tell everyone you’re no longer my sister.”

Mia stood behind him with a triumphant smile.

It had been two years.

Two years since Ethan brought her home and began treating her like his younger sister.

That was when my nightmare began.

Our parents had been dead for years. Until Mia came along, Ethan and I had only ever had each other.

I couldn’t accept him bringing someone else into our home.

Even worse, he was always telling me to give in to her because he felt sorry for everything she’d been through.

If he bought something that had once been exclusively mine, he would buy two and let her choose first.

Whenever he finally had a day off, I would ask him to take me to a movie, while Mia would want to go shopping.

He would always tell me, “We’ll see the movie next time. Let’s go shopping today.”

But next time never came.

Mia always took it from me.

I hated the feeling.

A stranger had entered my life and quietly stolen everything I had.

Yet I was still expected to smile, nod, and force myself to be the understanding sister.

But I cared about Ethan too much.

He was my brother.

During the earthquake, he had held me up beneath the rubble.

Without him, I probably would’ve died there with Mom and Dad.

She grabbed his hand in disbelief.“You’ve lost your mind! You’re killing someone for Julie?“I’ve already been sentenced to life in prison. Ethan slapped Mia across the face so hard that blood immediately appeared at the corner of her mouth.“Julie is my only real sister!“Tell me where you put her ashes!”Faced with the murderous fury in his eyes, Mia sobbed uncontrollably.“I threw them away! I smashed the urn! It’s beneath the balcony, but the wind has probably scattered everything by now!”A vein throbbed violently in Ethan’s forehead. He rushed downstairs and found the shattered urn beneath the balcony. It was made from cheap ceramic. Vera had bought it for ten dollars. She had believed that once Ethan learned I was dead, he would take responsibility for my funeral arrangements. She never expected him to refuse to believe her.Ethan stared at the ceramic shards scattered across the ground, shaking his head in disbelief. His eyes turned red.Only a few fragments of bone remained. He dropped to his knees and gathered them into his hands, clutching them tightly. The sharp fragments pierced his palms, drawin

Without saying a word, Ethan punched him in the face. The employee staggered back in shock.“What the hell is wrong with you?”Ethan’s face darkened as his anger mounted. He grabbed the man by the collar and demanded coldly, “Where are Julie Cole’s ashes? Don’t tell me you don’t have them.“If you lie to me again, I’ll sue this funeral home.”Panic flashed through the employee’s eyes.“I don’t know! Who is Julie Cole? I’ve never heard that name!”“Fine.”Ethan released him and spoke to his assistant without looking back.“Call the police.”“Yes, Mr. Cole.”The assistant pulled out her phone and prepared to make the call. The employee finally panicked. His legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the floor.“Don’t call them! I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything!”Ethan towered over him, his fists clenched. The man’s voice trembled.“A week ago, a woman named Mia Shaw came here. “You wanted to be buried in the family plot?”Mia sneered.“Not if I have anything to say about it.”She slammed the lid back onto the urn, marched onto the balcony, and hurled it over the railing.Crash! The urn shattered on the ground below, scattering my ashes everywhere.“What was that?”Ethan suddenly appeared in the doorway.Mia spun around in panic.“I dropped a vase. It slipped out of my hands.”He studied her suspiciously.“Are you hurt?”“No. Thank you for worrying about me, Ethan. I thought you were angry about what I said earlier.”He smiled.“Of course not. I know you didn’t mean anything by it.”Mia visibly relaxed. But she failed to notice that although Ethan was smiling, there was no warmth in his eyes. After our parents died, Ethan had built his company from the ground up. He’d spent years dealing with ruthless businessmen and had met every kind of liar imaginable. He was exceptionally good at reading people and catching even the smallest changes in t

Thirty minutes later, Ethan arrived at the funeral home on Riverdale Road. The moment he stepped inside and saw rows of urns, his brow furrowed. His gaze moved rapidly over the names, his expression complicated. If anyone had looked closely, they would’ve seen the fear buried in his eyes.An employee approached him.“Sir, whose remains are you here for?”Ethan’s voice was barely audible.“Julie Cole.”The employee’s expression shifted. He pretended to search through the registry before looking up with a smile.“Sir, we don’t have anyone by that name here.”Ethan’s pupils contracted slightly. The relief that washed over him was unmistakable. But the next second, his hands clenched into fists.“Julie, I knew you were lying to me!”I smiled bitterly as I floated nearby.Ethan, Mia came here and took my ashes before you arrived. You always thought she was better than me, that she was the sweet and obedient sister you deserved. But did you ever consider that she might be a

I was raped.”I had only gone out to buy frozen dinner.Vera invited me to spend the holiday with her family, but I didn’t want to intrude on their reunion, so I turned her down.As I walked back, I couldn’t stop wondering what Ethan was doing.Had he built a snowman with Mia and eaten turkey with her? Then I remembered he could be in any city by now.I didn’t even know whether it snowed there or whether they celebrated ChristmasI laughed at myself.I’d gone so long without my antidepressants that even my mind had become sluggish.Every home along the street was brightly lit, and children were setting off fireworks outside.I walked slowly, taking in the sights. Then everything suddenly went black.Several men dragged me into an alley with no security cameras. They pinned me down and tore off my clothes. That
