Chapter 1

"Are you sure you want a divorce? Our sixth wedding anniversary is next week, Ryan!"

My wife, Chelsea Hale, held her five-year-old son, Nathan Hale, in her arms and gently caressed his cheek. He was always so well-behaved in front of her.

Blood relations really were a bizarre thing. Even though I was the one who had taken care of him and raised him since he was a baby, his favorite person was still Chelsea.

Looking out the window, I suppressed the discomfort that was building up inside of me. "I've made up my mind. I don't want anything. Please get the divorce agreement as soon as possible," I said calmly.

Nathan's eyes lit up. Chelsea's well-defined brows knitted together as she seethed. "Nate has already explained that he didn't see you, Ryan. It was just an accident. Don't push it! Do you really want to divorce over such a trivial matter?"

I was the one who chose Nathan's name for him. I had hoped he would truly be a gift from God in our lives. However, now, the child I had spoiled for five years was baring his fangs at me.

"Mommy, is Ryan mad at me? I didn't do it on purpose. I seriously didn't see him.

"Maybe you should just abandon me... I don't want to be a burden to you!" Nathan looked at Chelsea cautiously before sneaking timid glances at me.

He might as well have just come right out and told her I tortured him. It was a far cry from the arrogant demeanor he carried when it was just the two of us.

"Yes, I do want a divorce because of such a trivial matter." I couldn't be bothered to waste my breath on her.

I shifted my gaze away from the two of them.

It really was because of this trivial matter. I had made up my mind to get a divorce, and I couldn't have done it without Nathan's help.

The previous afternoon, shortly after returning to the company, I received devastating news.

"Mr. Sterling, the deal fell through. The Hales have switched partners."

The newly announced partner was a rising star in the industry. Its CEO was young, good-looking, and had recently been frequently appearing on the trending list alongside Chelsea.

After having a project I was absolutely certain we'd land get snatched away for no reason, I lost my cool and dialed Chelsea's number.

She answered as though she had seen this coming. "I'm the one who changed it. I have plenty of money, and I don't need you to make a career for yourself, Ryan. Your primary job is to look after Nate," she said apathetically.

Her attitude was firm, and with a single sentence, she invalidated all the effort my team and I had put in.

When I'd returned home, utterly crestfallen, I'd run into Nathan. He was behind the wheel of a motorized toy car that reached up to my thighs, speeding straight toward me.

"I'm going to defeat the bad guy and protect my family!"

Before I could even register what was happening, he rammed into me full-throttle, and an excruciating pain exploded through my shin. I broke out in a cold sweat.

I was about to call out to Nathan when the toy car ran over my leg a second time. The blinding pain plunged me into darkness.

When I came to, my leg was encased in plaster. Nathan buried his face in Chelsea's embrace, weeping as if he were the victim.

Yet, here I was with a fractured leg. Had I not been rushed to the hospital in time, I could've easily died from the complications.

Chelsea and I had been married for six years, and I'd spent five of them raising Nathan. From the moment he had been a little infant to when he had learned to run and jump, I had poured nearly all my energy into him.

But at the end of the day, he detested me and wanted me dead.

Nathan felt that way, and so did Chelsea. For six years, she had never once made my identity public; she had only ever described me to others as someone Nathan had been attached to. I had been nothing more than a nanny at best.

There was nothing between us. If there was anything at all, it was strictly employer and employee.

Everyone in our social circle mocked me, whispering that I'd do anything just for a bit of resources. The countless rumored boyfriends around Chelsea also made things difficult for me.

I was exhausted, and the life I lived made me feel suffocated.

I didn't want to be a nanny for a child who had tried to kill me, nor did I want to live like a rat hiding in the shadows.

On the contrary, Sylvia always beamed at me, her eyes swimming with adoration. "From the day I joined your company, I thought you were incredible. As it turned out, you truly are. "Don't push me away just yet, Ryan. I know you're still living in the shadow of your past relationship, and your first instinct is to run. But I'm a pretty good catch myself, aren't I, Ryan?"Sylvia was a pretty good catch. She was diligent, proactive, and someone who met life's challenges head-on. Above all, she possessed a vibrant energy that I lacked. She made my world feel a little brighter and more interesting. However, I couldn't be sure if what I felt was love, so I never gave her a definitive answer. My silence hurt Sylvia a little, though she shook it off almost immediately. "Let's go grab dinner!"It never crossed my mind that I would run into Nathan at the restaurant. He was the spitting image of a street urchin—dressed in ill-fitting clothes, his cheeks smudged with dirt, clutching a san

A single tear slipped from Chelsea's eye, landing on the back of my hand. It was scalding hot against my skin, but my heart had already turned to ice. I lost count of how many times I had sat alone at home, staring at the headline about Chelsea and Lucas. I used to overanalyze every word and pore over every photo, feeling disgusted with myself for still caring. But that was then. That marriage—which was nothing more than years of brainwashing myself—was finally over. "Is there nothing I can do to make this right, Ryan? I've realized my mistakes, and I've already punished Nate. I know I haven't done right by you all these years."I didn't utter a word, so the room fell into a heavy silence. The message finally hit home—I was no longer willing to waste even a single second on her. Bursting into a flood of tears, she staggered to the door. Before she could step through the threshold, I called out to her. Chelsea's eyes lit up with a sliver of hope as she turned around to look

Flustered, Clarice practically bolted before I could respond. I had no choice but to chase her, only for her to slip and twist her ankle."Can you walk on it?" I asked. I already had my back turned toward her, intending to give her a piggyback ride. "I'm okay. Don't worry about it." Refusing to look at me, she began to limp away. I sighed and, without giving her the chance to refuse, pulled her onto my back and carried her all the way to my room. "Do you like me?" she murmured, as if she would cry her eyes out if I said no. "I'm a divorcé, you know that."Clarice was in charge of my affairs, so she naturally knew all about my marriage and how badly I'd been treated. "I don't care," she whispered. Her voice was so soft that it was buried under a loud, urgent banging on the door. Clarice tried to get up to answer it, but I pinned her down and walked out instead. The moment I swung the door open, the heavy stench of alcohol hit me. "Ryan... can I come in?" It was Chelse

Life carried on as usual. My company was making incredible strides. Clarice was back to being my biggest fangirl and, on several occasions, secured investments for me. At times, I found it strange. She was just a junior assistant. Where on earth was she getting all these connections? Yet, she would give me an unreadable look and stick her tongue out at me. "That's a trade secret, boss."Fair enough. Or so I thought, until I walked out of the office one evening and caught Clarice clinging to one of our new investors. "You're the best! I get cold feet every time I see Ryan's ice-cold face. How could I ever tell him how I feel?" she whined.I looked up and immediately retracted my foot. I was frozen in place, unsure whether to walk past them or retreat into the office. Neither of them noticed me. The man caressed Clarice's cheek and teased, "Isn't this what you chose for yourself? Here I thought you had him wrapped around your finger since you practically begged me to come back

"Nate." Nathan's biological father, Lucas, trailed in behind Chelsea. He was her first love, who was simultaneously familiar and a total stranger to me. Lucas looked at me with such animosity it felt as though he wanted to kill me with his eyes.I scoffed. "Why would I treat him any differently? He's not my son. Besides, you don't seem like you're doing any better as his mother. What gives you the right to criticize me?"Chelsea was anything but a model parent. In our six years of marriage, the only thing I couldn't do for her was bring Nathan into the world—everything else had fallen entirely on my shoulders. She would get annoyed when Nathan cried or made a fuss and complained that he was unreasonable. She would also lose her temper when he fell ill. "How on earth are you taking care of Nate? He's sick. Whoever caused the problem should deal with it. I swear you just don't view him as your own, Ryan!"Chelsea always made it sound so righteous, but in reality, it was just a

Chelsea smashed the items in front of her and snarled, "Are you out of your mind?" I was out of my mind, but I had also truly seen the light. "Chelsea, in all the years I've been at home, I haven't spent a single cent of your money, and I raised Nathan by myself. "I'm not charging you for my labor because everything I did, I did out of love. Everything I owe you is right here, so spare me."This was the greatest act of kindness I could do for both of us. "Must you draw such a clear line between us, Ryan? I've told you countless times. Nate is still a child. What happened was just an accident. "You've thrown your tantrum. Haven't you had enough?"I couldn't be bothered to argue with her, so I turned around and left. The same group of people was still gathered at the front desk. As soon as they spotted me, they plastered sycophantic smiles on their faces. "Watch your step, Mr. Sterling. We look forward to your next visit, Mr. Sterling." I was well aware that their sudde
