Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
The sunlight was blinding on the day of our divorce.

Because Chelsea had never made our relationship public all these years, I was at least spared the trouble of breaking the news to my friends. Nathan wasn't my own flesh and blood, either.

There were no ties left binding me to her. All it took was a simple trip to the courthouse to get the divorce certificate.

After all the procedures had been completed, the sun had shifted lower in the sky. I raised my hand to shield my sore eyes.

"Let's have dinner together. My parents… want to see you." Chelsea's gaze was unreadable.

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

Six years ago, I had rescued Chelsea's parents, Chester Hale and Celine Sinclair, in the wilderness.

The elderly couple were kind, generous souls. Upon learning that I was single and a decent man, they immediately took a liking to me and wanted to set us up. One thing had led to another, and I ended up falling head over heels in love with Chelsea.

That had also been when I found out the truth about her pregnancy. Most people wouldn't have been able to accept it, but to me, the past was the past. I loved her, and I was willing to accept her, baggage and all.

Before long, we'd tied the knot.

Chelsea had often lain in my arms, daydreaming aloud. "Do you think the baby will grow up to be just like you if you raise him? My parents said you're a reliable man."

Looking into my eyes, she'd asked, "Ryan, you won't ever leave me, right?"

Her breath had brushed against my face, causing my heart to thump against my ribcage.

I had no idea what had come over me, but that single sentence spoken on a random afternoon became the reason I forgave her mistakes countless times later on. Even now, I was still willing to follow her home because she asked me to.

Unlike Chelsea, Chester and Celine genuinely adored me. Both of them had been waiting at the door long before we arrived.

"What took you so long? Chelsea's really too much, always getting into arguments with you. Don't worry, we'll set her straight."

As I took in their concerned expressions, I couldn't stop the tears from welling up in my eyes. My voice trembled as I choked out, "M-Mr. and Mrs. Hale, I'm so sorry. I couldn't fulfill your wishes."

The change in the way I addressed them was all Chester and Celine needed to understand what had happened. Tears coursed down their weathered faces.

"We're the ones who should apologize to you. Chelsea's ungrateful. She ruined your life.

"It's all our fault. If it weren't for us, you two wouldn't have gotten married. We thought Nate would bring you closer together, but we never imagined…" the elderly couple trailed off.

I led Chester and Celine to their seats, letting the subject drop.

Dinner was unusually quiet. Celine sighed, as if she were lost in memory or lamenting the past. "If only you two had a child of your own... Someone to bind you together..."

"Mrs. Hale, what's done is done."

Not a single moment went by where I didn't thank my lucky stars that I hadn't brought a child of my own into this world, sparing them from being raised in such a dysfunctional house.

Likely out of guilt, Chester and Celine had slipped a debit card into my pocket, which I discovered on the ride back. I didn't think much of it and returned the card to Chelsea.

Chelsea mocked, "Ryan, you've had it easy for far too long, and now you're throwing a tantrum for the sake of it. Keep it. Don't make a scene now only to use it as an excuse to crawl back to me later. Why bother? You're not cut out for a hard life."

I stared blankly at her features. For a fleeting moment, a wave of bitterness swept through me, but it quickly gave way to a smile.

"Chelsea, I wasn't born into privilege, and I won't be going back to that life ever again."

My voice was barely a whisper, but she heard me. Chelsea parted her lips for a long while, but she didn't utter a single word in response.

Once we arrived at my destination, I placed the debit card on the passenger seat.

Chelsea called out to me, "If this is a tactic to get my attention, you've succeeded. Don't push your luck, Ryan. I don't have that much time to play along with your little game."

Her voice had been thick with sarcasm. My brows knitted together, and I left without a backward glance.

Chelsea didn't understand me, so she had no idea that I truly didn't want her anymore.

On the contrary, Sylvia always beamed at me, her eyes swimming with adoration. "From the day I joined your company, I thought you were incredible. As it turned out, you truly are. "Don't push me away just yet, Ryan. I know you're still living in the shadow of your past relationship, and your first instinct is to run. But I'm a pretty good catch myself, aren't I, Ryan?"Sylvia was a pretty good catch. She was diligent, proactive, and someone who met life's challenges head-on. Above all, she possessed a vibrant energy that I lacked. She made my world feel a little brighter and more interesting. However, I couldn't be sure if what I felt was love, so I never gave her a definitive answer. My silence hurt Sylvia a little, though she shook it off almost immediately. "Let's go grab dinner!"It never crossed my mind that I would run into Nathan at the restaurant. He was the spitting image of a street urchin—dressed in ill-fitting clothes, his cheeks smudged with dirt, clutching a san

A single tear slipped from Chelsea's eye, landing on the back of my hand. It was scalding hot against my skin, but my heart had already turned to ice. I lost count of how many times I had sat alone at home, staring at the headline about Chelsea and Lucas. I used to overanalyze every word and pore over every photo, feeling disgusted with myself for still caring. But that was then. That marriage—which was nothing more than years of brainwashing myself—was finally over. "Is there nothing I can do to make this right, Ryan? I've realized my mistakes, and I've already punished Nate. I know I haven't done right by you all these years."I didn't utter a word, so the room fell into a heavy silence. The message finally hit home—I was no longer willing to waste even a single second on her. Bursting into a flood of tears, she staggered to the door. Before she could step through the threshold, I called out to her. Chelsea's eyes lit up with a sliver of hope as she turned around to look

Flustered, Clarice practically bolted before I could respond. I had no choice but to chase her, only for her to slip and twist her ankle."Can you walk on it?" I asked. I already had my back turned toward her, intending to give her a piggyback ride. "I'm okay. Don't worry about it." Refusing to look at me, she began to limp away. I sighed and, without giving her the chance to refuse, pulled her onto my back and carried her all the way to my room. "Do you like me?" she murmured, as if she would cry her eyes out if I said no. "I'm a divorcé, you know that."Clarice was in charge of my affairs, so she naturally knew all about my marriage and how badly I'd been treated. "I don't care," she whispered. Her voice was so soft that it was buried under a loud, urgent banging on the door. Clarice tried to get up to answer it, but I pinned her down and walked out instead. The moment I swung the door open, the heavy stench of alcohol hit me. "Ryan... can I come in?" It was Chelse

Life carried on as usual. My company was making incredible strides. Clarice was back to being my biggest fangirl and, on several occasions, secured investments for me. At times, I found it strange. She was just a junior assistant. Where on earth was she getting all these connections? Yet, she would give me an unreadable look and stick her tongue out at me. "That's a trade secret, boss."Fair enough. Or so I thought, until I walked out of the office one evening and caught Clarice clinging to one of our new investors. "You're the best! I get cold feet every time I see Ryan's ice-cold face. How could I ever tell him how I feel?" she whined.I looked up and immediately retracted my foot. I was frozen in place, unsure whether to walk past them or retreat into the office. Neither of them noticed me. The man caressed Clarice's cheek and teased, "Isn't this what you chose for yourself? Here I thought you had him wrapped around your finger since you practically begged me to come back

"Nate." Nathan's biological father, Lucas, trailed in behind Chelsea. He was her first love, who was simultaneously familiar and a total stranger to me. Lucas looked at me with such animosity it felt as though he wanted to kill me with his eyes.I scoffed. "Why would I treat him any differently? He's not my son. Besides, you don't seem like you're doing any better as his mother. What gives you the right to criticize me?"Chelsea was anything but a model parent. In our six years of marriage, the only thing I couldn't do for her was bring Nathan into the world—everything else had fallen entirely on my shoulders. She would get annoyed when Nathan cried or made a fuss and complained that he was unreasonable. She would also lose her temper when he fell ill. "How on earth are you taking care of Nate? He's sick. Whoever caused the problem should deal with it. I swear you just don't view him as your own, Ryan!"Chelsea always made it sound so righteous, but in reality, it was just a

Chelsea smashed the items in front of her and snarled, "Are you out of your mind?" I was out of my mind, but I had also truly seen the light. "Chelsea, in all the years I've been at home, I haven't spent a single cent of your money, and I raised Nathan by myself. "I'm not charging you for my labor because everything I did, I did out of love. Everything I owe you is right here, so spare me."This was the greatest act of kindness I could do for both of us. "Must you draw such a clear line between us, Ryan? I've told you countless times. Nate is still a child. What happened was just an accident. "You've thrown your tantrum. Haven't you had enough?"I couldn't be bothered to argue with her, so I turned around and left. The same group of people was still gathered at the front desk. As soon as they spotted me, they plastered sycophantic smiles on their faces. "Watch your step, Mr. Sterling. We look forward to your next visit, Mr. Sterling." I was well aware that their sudde
