Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
Cyrus' POV

After I jumped into the ocean, they pulled me out not long afterward. The water was freezing, and I was shivering uncontrollably as I stood there, dripping wet.

Marissa's pretty face was twisted with anger.

"Cyrus, are you insane? Why would you jump into the ocean in the middle of winter? Do you have a death wish?"

I kept my head down, avoiding her gaze as I used the towel in my hands to dry my hair. In a low voice, I asked, "Are you going to keep your word?"

Her anger only seemed to intensify. With a sharp sweep of her arm, she knocked the wine glasses off the table, sending them crashing to the floor.

"Fine. You really are something. I'll give you exactly what you want."

…

Marissa kept her promise. She showed up at Elena's birthday dinner, but she brought Damian with her.

Elena was furious, and whispers immediately spread among the guests. Countless eyes turned toward me, filled with contempt and disdain. I kept my expression calm, but my tightly clenched hands trembled slightly beneath the table.

I couldn't help thinking that Marissa truly hated me. She never missed an opportunity to humiliate me and drag what little dignity I had left through the dirt.

After dinner, Elena summoned me to the backyard of the villa and ordered me to kneel. She was furious with Marissa, but now that her daughter had grown strong enough to stand on her own, she couldn't punish her the way she used to.

So instead, she punished me, using my humiliation as a warning to Marissa.

What Elena didn't know was that Marissa didn't care about me in the slightest. In fact, every outrageous thing she did was deliberate. She wasn't trying to hurt me just for the sake of hurting me. She was provoking her mother, knowing that every time she crossed the line, Elena would take her anger out on me instead.

My knees were pressed against the hard, uneven gravel, and the pain had already faded into a dull numbness. Worse, after spending the afternoon soaked in freezing seawater, I could feel a fever coming on.

My head grew heavier by the second, and my vision kept fading in and out.

That was when Marissa walked over and stopped in front of me, looking down at me with barely contained anger.

"Cyrus, do you really have no dignity?"

I let out a bitter laugh and looked up at her. "Isn't this what you wanted? You wanted me to live like some pathetic animal with no dignity. Isn't that exactly what you wanted?"

My vision was so blurry that I could barely make out her face, but I could still feel the fury radiating from her.

Her eyes seemed to cut into me like blades as she snapped, "Yeah. Someone as shameless and money-hungry as you doesn't deserve any dignity. Aren't you my mom's most loyal lapdog? As long as there's money involved, you'd do anything."

Her words were vicious, each one striking straight into my heart. I dug my fingernails into my palms until beads of blood seeped between my fingers, but I barely felt the pain. The ache in my chest was so much worse.

I gave her a bitter smile.

Of course, I wanted to have some dignity. But what good was dignity when it couldn't put food on my table or keep me warm? What good was pride when I couldn't even afford to survive? In the end, dignity was useless.

Marissa hated me because she believed I had betrayed her once. She always said the same thing: "Someone who betrays you can never be forgiven." But the truth was, I had never betrayed her.

During the second semester of our sophomore year of high school, Marissa and I went on a school-organized summer camp trip. Somehow, our whereabouts got out, and enemies of the Caldwell family took advantage of the opportunity to kidnap us.

They locked us in a dark, damp basement where rats and cockroaches scurried through every corner.

Marissa had always been in poor health, and it didn't take long for her to develop a high fever. Her face burned with heat, her breath came out scorching, and she drifted in and out of consciousness.

Eventually, she curled up in my arms, tears welling in her glassy eyes. "Cyrus, am I going to die?" she asked, her voice trembling with fear.

I held her tightly, using my own body heat to keep her warm. Leaning close to her ear, I whispered firmly, "No. You're going to be okay, Marissa. You're going to live a long, healthy life. I'll make sure you're safe."

The next day, desperate to get help for her, I called out to the man who brought us our food and asked him to come inside.

The moment his guard dropped, I grabbed a loose piece of stone from the wall and slammed it against the back of his head, knocking him unconscious. I didn't waste a second. I hoisted Marissa onto my back and hurried out of the basement, carrying her as far away from that place as I could.

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 11

Cyrus' POV The next time I heard anything about Marissa was five years after I disappeared. When I first fell into the river, I thought I was as good as dead. But as it turned out, one of the kidnappers was too much of a coward to actually kill anyone. He pulled me out of the water and dumped me on the riverbank before leaving me there. I lay on my back, staring up at the twinkling stars, and decided I didn't want to go back. I didn't want to get tangled up with the Caldwells or any of those people ever again. The Caldwell family's financial support had long since been repaid. After all these years, I'd earned more than enough to consider that debt settled. So, I asked a friend who worked at the hospital to help me arrange a false death certificate for my sister, and then I took her away with me. We settled in a quiet coastal city where the sea breeze blew year-round, the winters were mild, and the summers were cool. I opened an orphanage and began taking in abandoned childre

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 10

Third-person POV Whenever she had to leave for an early business trip, someone would make sure her luggage and everything she needed were packed and ready, with a bowl of warm, nourishing soup waiting for her in the morning. Whenever she was too exhausted from work to cook or even think about food, the man who had spent years perfecting his cooking would quietly prepare a meal just for her.It was only now that Marissa realized how deeply Cyrus had woven himself into her life. His presence had become as constant and unnoticed as the air she breathed. She had taken him for granted for so long that she never realized how much of her life revolved around him until, suddenly, he was no longer there. She desperately searched for any trace of Cyrus, but she couldn't find him anywhere. It was as if he had simply vanished after the kidnapping, leaving no trace behind. The longer she searched, the more she felt like she was losing her mind. Marissa had always hated Cyrus. She hated him

Cyrus' POVAfter that day, I never saw Marissa again. It was almost as if she were deliberately avoiding me, but I had no time to care about what she was doing. I was already determined to leave. All I wanted was to find a quiet place surrounded by peaceful mountains and clear waters, where I could take good care of my sister and spend the rest of my days in peace. But misfortune wasn't about to let me go that easily. I wanted to leave, yet somehow, I ended up caught in someone else's mess. I had never enjoyed any of the privileges that came with being part of the Caldwell family, but I was kidnapped simply because I was Marissa's husband.Marissa had always been ruthless in business, and over the years, she'd made plenty of enemies. I'd warned her before not to push people too far. When you backed someone into a corner, they were bound to come after you eventually. She had only pointed a finger in my face and snapped, "Who do you think you are? You think you have the right to

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 8

Cyrus' POV On the day Marissa threw a birthday party for Damian, she spared no expense. She set off fireworks across the entire city and even hired more than 100 drones to put on a spectacular birthday display in his honor. I stood beneath the stage, watching my wife laugh and celebrate with another man, her arm wrapped around him as though he were the only person in the world who mattered. All around me, people stared, their eyes filled with curiosity and judgment. With every passing second, it felt like their gazes were slowly swallowing me alive.I simply smiled and said nothing. Then, without warning, the photos of Marissa and Damian smiling together on the giant screen behind the stage suddenly changed. Their happy memories disappeared, replaced by photos of Damian living it up overseas—drinking with blonde women in his arms, frequenting casinos, and even intimate photos of him in bed, completely unrestrained. The atmosphere at the party instantly changed. Most of the g

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 7

Cyrus' POV In the end, my plan fell through. Marissa spent even more money than before, bribing the younger members of the so-called "holdout households" until they finally agreed to move out. Once the last residents were gone, the old buildings, steeped in history and memories, were reduced to rubble beneath the demolition equipment. The board was quickly won over by the entertainment complex's projected profits, and Damian took all the credit. He even smugly sent me a text. "Cyrus, you're seriously useless. I've been gone all this time, and you still haven't managed to win Marissa over. Whatever I want, she practically hands it to me without hesitation. You're nothing but a piece of shit."I stared at the message for a moment before wearily rubbing my temples. I knew Damian hated me. When Marissa first started getting close to him, I investigated his background. What I found wasn't pretty. He spent most of his time hanging around bars and nightclubs, and he'd gotten more

  • Five Years as My Wife's Lapdog   Chapter 6

Cyrus' POV I came down with a fever of 107.6°F and spent an entire day in the hospital fighting for my life. The doctor chewed me out for neglecting my health and pushing myself far beyond my limits. I lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. When the doctor asked where my family was, I simply shook my head. What was I supposed to say? My wife was halfway across the world, traveling with another man. Marissa knew that bringing Damian to her birthday dinner had infuriated her mother, so she had taken him overseas to stay out of Elena's reach for a while. Every now and then, I'd come across Damian's posts on social media, each one showing them enjoying another new destination together. "We're scuba diving in Belloria's crystal-clear waters." "Hit the slopes in Valoria today. Ms. Caldwell really knows how to spoil me.""Watching the Northern Lights in Eirwyn tonight!"The posts were flooded with comments from people cheering them on. "Another day of crying over this per
