Chapter 2

Author: Seven of Diamonds
Ignoring his grim expression, I led Riley straight back to our room. She was crying her heart out. I gently soothed her while packing away the photo on our nightstand that pictured Mandy, Ethan, and me.

Ten years ago, when Ethan and I first met, they could barely stand each other. It all stemmed from a car accident during our childhood.

Back then, our parents only had time to shield me in the back seat and couldn’t save Mandy, who had insisted on sitting in the front passenger seat. Because of that, she ended up with ten steel plates fitted in her body, and from that day on, she hated me with a passion.

To make it up to her, our parents constantly neglected me. They always left me cold leftovers, enrolled me in community college, and never offered any help with my career.

Every time something like that happened, Ethan would shield me behind him and argue with them until he was red in the face. Yet somehow, somewhere along the way, all that arguing led him right into Mandy’s bed.

Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Mandy walked in carrying a plate of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

“Faye, you used to love this. I made one especially for you. Eat it while it’s fresh.”

I looked down and stared at the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I was severely allergic to peanuts, and Mandy knew it.

Seeing that I hadn’t moved, she urged me softly, “What’s wrong, Faye? Why aren’t you eating? Did you remember something?”

I smiled, picked up the plate, and stuffed it all into my mouth. A familiar sharp pain quickly came from my throat, followed by a dizzying spin as the world spun around me.

Before my consciousness faded, I saw Ethan rushing over in a panic. When I woke up, I was staring at the stark white ceiling of a hospital room.

Beside me, I heard Ethan speaking in a hushed voice, “She doesn’t remember anything! What are you trying to test her for? What if something terrible actually happened to her?”

Mandy sobbed as she ran out of the room.

Seeing that I was awake, Ethan quickly reached out, wanting to help me sit up. However, I turned away and dodged his hand.

“Thank you, Ethan, but I can move on my own.”

His hand hung in the air for a second before he stiffly pulled it back.

The doctor mentioned my symptoms weren’t severe because I was brought in promptly. So, after getting an IV drip, we returned home.

The moment we pushed the door open, we heard Riley crying loudly. I rushed inside and spotted a chubby little boy holding a baseball bat and swinging it, shattering everything around him into pieces.

At a glance, I recognized what they were: the trophies Ethan and I had won together in competitions five years ago. Back then, I cherished them so much that I would wipe them clean every day.

When he saw us, the chubby boy threw a tantrum on the floor.

“Daddy! She wouldn’t give me her toys! Make her give them to me!”

Mandy raised an eyebrow and ground her heel into the shattered fragments.

“Faye, since you don’t remember anything from the past anyway, it’s useless keeping these. Why don’t you give them to Benjamin to play with? That way, it can still serve some purpose.”

I didn’t answer her. Instead, I carefully checked Riley from top to bottom, and only after making sure she was unharmed did I let out a sigh of relief.

“Sweetheart, they’re just things. I don’t care about them at all. I only care about your safety. Do you understand?”

After seeing Riley nod, I looked up at Mandy and said calmly, “Mandy, is there anything else in here that you’d like? I’ll give them all to you.”

Mandy’s smile froze for a moment. Then, mumbling that I was no fun, she grabbed the chubby little boy and turned to leave.

For some unknown reason, however, Ethan suddenly lost his temper. He whipped out a thick stack of photos from his coat and hurled them right at me.

“How can you give everything away so easily? In that case, can you give yourself away too? These are all potential marriage partners we’ve selected for you. Pick one.”

It was the investigation report from a private detective. Every rumor attacking me lately had been orchestrated by Mandy.Dad’s hands couldn’t stop shaking, and tears streamed down Mom’s face. Despite that, I stood up and walked upstairs in silence. However, the moment I pushed open Mandy’s bedroom door, I froze. I had prepared myself mentally. Given her personality, I expected her to hurl vile curses, scream insults, and threaten me with even more malicious schemes the moment she saw me. Instead, I was met with a woman sitting on her bed, her hair a mess.Hearing the noise at the door, she raised her head and glanced at me. Her eyes held no hatred or fury—only confusion and helplessness. A moment later, as if seeing nothing at all, she lowered her head again.Mom’s eyes were bloodshot. Choking back her sobs, she barely managed to say, “Ever since the wedding, she has been mentally unstable. Just a few days ago, she discovered that Ethan had been going out to see you, and she brok

Whenever I went to Seth’s company, I would often hear people whispering behind my back. Even when I returned to my family home, the neighbors quickly disappeared the moment they saw me.Finally, while standing near a stairwell, I overheard a conversation.“Don’t be fooled by Faye’s saintly act. She’s no victim. I heard Ethan was in love with Mandy first. It was Faye who threw a temper tantrum and used every dirty trick in the book to tear them apart.“In the end, though, her dirty tricks couldn’t triumph over true love. They still ended up together. They only left the country because they were terrified of what crazy thing she might do next. Now that she knows she doesn’t stand a chance, she’s using Seth Clark as a rebound.“I thought she was innocent, but as it turns out, she’s just a master manipulator.”The moment I pushed the door open, the people in the hallway scattered, their faces pale. Silence swallowed the corridor again as the motion-sensor light flickered off and on.

Painful sobs echoed from behind me, but I closed my eyes, refusing to stop. After walking a few paces, a car beside me suddenly honked. When I turned my head, I saw Seth leaning against his car with a bright smile on his face. Instantly, my heart warmed. I smiled and got into the car with him.The moment I opened the door, I noticed a gift box on the passenger seat. Seth raised his eyebrows and said, “Don’t be sad anymore. Take a look at this.”I shook my head gently. “I’m not sad.”I was just overwhelmed with emotion.I used to hate Mandy and Ethan. I hated the love that had secretly blossomed between them, and I hated the way they had begged me. Yet, I never expected that after five long years, a love fought for with such hardship would turn sour.In the rearview mirror, a disheveled woman suddenly charged up to Ethan and pounded him with her fists over and over. Even through the car window, her furious interrogation echoed loudly.“You told me you were coming out to sign a c

The next day, the day after that, and for an entire month, I would see Ethan’s stooped figure standing downstairs every morning. Occasionally, as I passed by, I could even hear his painful sobs.“I’m sorry, Faye. I’m sorry, Riley. I was wrong.”I gently covered Riley’s eyes and quickened my pace, leading her away.Eventually, unable to bear the endless disturbance, I contacted security and told them to keep Ethan outside the gate. I thought he would give up after that, but instead he moved to the main entrance of the neighborhood and stood there.People came and went, staring at him with all sorts of looks. However, he didn’t seem to care as he stood in the same spot, staring fixedly in the direction we had left. The security manager approached me with an embarrassed look. “Ms. Green, him standing there isn’t illegal, and he refuses to be driven away. We can’t be too forceful with him either. But it’s really hurting the neighborhood’s image. Could you perhaps resolve this privatel

The room instantly erupted into chaos.“Did you hear? Five years ago, Faye and Ethan were actually a couple. Then they got divorced for some reason, and Ethan went abroad with Faye’s older sister, Mandy.”“No wonder. It turns out he hooked up with his wife’s sister.”Hearing blatant whispers all around him, Ethan’s face turned pale with embarrassment and rage. He let go of the hem of my dress limply. I didn’t spare him another glance. Holding onto Seth’s arm and leading Riley by the hand, I stepped into the elevator. The elevator doors slowly closed, shutting out the clamor outside. Yet, as soon as we pushed open the doors to the grand ballroom upstairs, deafening cheers and the pop of party poppers instantly enveloped us.The grand scale of the venue far exceeded my imagination. Fresh flowers blanketed the red carpet, while crystal chandeliers lit up the ballroom. Even when Ethan and I got married, it hadn’t come anywhere close to this level of extravagance.Seth seemed to cat

Seth’s smile was bright as he jogged over to greet me. The moment my hand touched his, a sudden force grabbed me from behind and yanked me back.Ethan looked deathly pale as he asked, “Faye, where do you think you’re going?”A hush fell over the surroundings. Everyone exchanged bewildered glances, unable to make sense of what he was doing. My voice remained perfectly calm. “It’s my wedding day, so naturally, I’m going to get married. Our venue is upstairs, so we’ll be heading out first.”With every word I spoke, Ethan’s grip tightened around my arm, as if he was going to crush my bones into dust.Frowning, I pried his fingers off one by one and added, “What are you doing, Ethan?”At the mention of his name, his face turned white for a split second, and he yanked his hand back as if he’d been burned. He looked toward Riley pleadingly. “Riley, what your mother is saying isn’t real, right? This is just a joke, right? Or is she still upset about what happened before? I can apologize
