Chapter 3

Author: The Wealthy Louise
"I… I'll sign it…"

I forced the words out of my mouth despite the difficulty. If I wanted to live, I had no choice but to compromise.

As soon as I agreed, Bruno's expression softened. He poured me a glass of warm water and handed me my medicine. He even considerately offered me some candy.

I ignored his sudden show of mercy. As soon as the medicine came into effect, I rushed to the floor, littered with glass shards. I couldn't control the grief surging within me.

I gathered the torn photo with trembling hands, carefully placing the pieces in a small pouch from my suitcase.

My mother passed away when I was very young from a relapse of her congenital heart disease. At that time, my father had just started his business and couldn't afford her treatments. The guilt haunted him until the day he died.

When the hospital discovered I had inherited my mother's heart condition, my father started working day and night—all because he wanted me to be healthy. It was his way to make up for the past and redeem himself.

Unfortunately, his health worsened as he worked himself to the ground, and he passed away. Before breathing his last, he entrusted me to someone he trusted in the company by transferring his shares and management rights.

That someone was Bruno.

And yet, this was how Bruno took care of me. Even after seeing me so full of grief, he continued to mock me from the side.

"It's just a photo. Why make it such a big deal?"

I packed everything away, but when I looked at him again, there was no emotion in my eyes.

"My mother didn't like having her photos taken when she was alive, and my father was always busy with work. This was the only photo I had with them."

He froze, then bit his lip. "You didn't tell me that."

I gave him a cold glance, not wanting to argue.

Bruno couldn't stand to see me like this and yanked me off the floor, dragging me forcefully to the bed. He saw me lowering my eyes, refusing to even look at him.

At this moment, he seemed to realize he had gone too far. He reached out to stroke my cheek, wanting to comfort me, but I slapped his hand away.

Bruno's face darkened; he didn't bother to try and console me anymore. Perhaps he thought I was simply throwing a tantrum.

He shoved the asset transfer contract and pen to my face again.

"Sign it and I'll take you to get the photo fixed."

This time, I didn't argue. I quickly picked up the pen and signed my name.

His behavior of offering a carrot and a stick was repulsive. Had he asked nicely, I would have signed it anyway. I had already transferred my assets abroad, so all he would get was an unenforceable contract—in other words, nothing.

Honestly, I never expected Bruno to go to such extremes. Didn't he know that any contract signed under the threat of violence was invalid?

It wasn't until he mentioned the wedding that I understood his thoughts. Despite being unable to hide the deviousness in his eyes, he still pretended to love me.

"We're getting married tomorrow. Why don't we get our marriage registered now? That way, you'll be my wife legally."

I shot him a look and immediately called him out. "So you can simply call this a family dispute after that, right?"

"Are you still angry?"

Bruno frowned. He hated it when I argued against his wishes.

"I'm getting anxious because you're not with me. Besides, once we're married, what's mine is yours too. What's the big deal about registering our marriage? And if you had ever thought of me, you wouldn't have sold your shares anonymously. Husband and wife are supposed to be a team, but you sold the assets that are supposed to be mine. This is just a punishment for that."

I wanted to argue with him again, but he forcibly ran his hand through my hair and finally cupped my face, his eyes staring into mine.

"I won't let you die, so this is all your fault."

When I heard those words, I didn't want to fight back anymore and simply lay down on the bed. I wasn't interested in arguing with him anymore.

Why had I never discovered how shameless he could be before this?

I vividly remembered how kind he had been on our first encounter. He would always take me to my check-ups, and would even go out in the rain to get my medicine. Whenever I called, he'd drop everything to see me. And with my father's trust in him, I was naturally attracted to him.

Upon learning the truth between him and Raine, I finally woke up from my delusions.

Bruno's attitude toward me worsened every time I gave in. Now, his intentions were obvious.

When Bruno saw me continue to maintain my silence, he finally lost his patience. "Fine! Since you don't want to register our marriage, you'll stay here until the wedding!"

I didn't understand what he meant at first—until I heard the click of a lock after he went out.

Immediately, I got up from the bed and walked over to the door. I rattled the doorknob, furious, and then banged on the door anxiously.

"Bruno! Are you keeping me here because you're afraid I'll sue you? I won't do that! Let me out!" I yelled.

If I stayed any longer, I would certainly miss my flight.

I didn't want to waste any more time here.

I refused to play along with Bruno anymore!

That sudden, unexpected proposal left me stunned. Minutes passed, and I had no idea how long I stood there like a marionette, just staring at Liam's cautious face. He bit his lip, as if summoning every ounce of courage he had. Even though his heart was full of fear and uncertainty, he forced himself to say those words out loud. Finally, under his intense yet nervous gaze, I nodded slightly and uttered a single word: "Yes." That simple answer seemed to drain all the strength from my body. After I agreed to his proposal, I gradually calmed down. I started thinking about the future; after everything I had been through, I had finally figured out a lot of things. I understood now that as long as I could truly be independent and strong, I never had to fear being hurt by love again. Even if I spent a lifetime with him, I would never forget the precious embrace I received today. The moment I said yes, Liam held me as if I were something fragile. He was so gentle and careful. A

The moment one of those men's filthy hands reached for my chest, I didn't hesitate—I pulled out my stun baton and jabbed it right at him! While the others were still in shock, I went after the other four, one by one. Soon, the ground was filled with men howling in pain. All five of them lay there, twitching and convulsing. Without thinking, I took out my phone and called the police. It didn't matter who wanted me hurt, the police would get to the bottom of it. Meanwhile, at Liam's side… He was checking his chat with his beloved. When he saw the message that I was on my way to pick him up, he got so excited he started bragging to his friends. "See? My wife's coming to get me! Are you envious of me, you singletons?" One of his close friends nudged him with his elbow. "The gods will punish you for showing off too much!" "Yeah! You've got a girlfriend, but the rest of us will get one eventually!" someone else grumbled. Liam laughed like a little boy, then impatiently jumped

Time passed quickly. It was only a few days later that I found out what was being said about me online. Honestly, I couldn't care less. Whenever something like this happened, money could be used to clear up my name. Online gossip was full of smoke and mirrors. Who would truly keep paying attention to something so trivial? Bruno's attempt to use public opinion to pressure me completely failed, but his actions did provoke Raine. Lying in her hospital bed, Raine read the news on her phone, gritting her teeth. In the end, she completely snapped and hurled her phone onto the bed, cursing, "Aelia! You killed my child, and now you're trying to steal my man! I hate you!" The nurse who came in to change Raine's dressing just rolled her eyes. At first, she had almost believed Raine, thinking that Raine's hatred was because Aelia had killed her child. Now, the nurse was sure Raine was just jealous, since Bruno didn't love her. The nurse already knew about the online drama, so she was

"Everything you said is because you're upset, right? Someone as gentle as you won't ever say something like that!" he cried. Bruno looked at me almost pleadingly. It was the first time he had ever shown me that kind of expression…like when Liam nervously asked me if I had a fiance. But when Liam did it, it was charming. When Bruno did it, it made my skin crawl. I guess that was the difference when I love someone and when I don't. I firmly brushed his hand away. "From the day you used my life to threaten me into signing that agreement, there was nothing left between us." Bruno opened his mouth, but whatever he said now was useless. He had never imagined that someone who had once loved him so much one day would walk away. He had always thought that even if I found out about him and Raine, he would be able to talk his way out of it. Now, everything was different. If Bruno had to choose between me and Raine, he realized he couldn't give up either. So, he let me go. He did

My surprised gaze instantly fell on Bruno. Even the doctor was taken aback by the absurdity. He yanked Bruno's hand off his collar and said bluntly, "Stop talking nonsense." With that, he turned and went back into the operating room. He was only coming out to deliver the message, anyway. I watched Bruno go mad, banging on the door to the operating theater. "Save the baby, you hear me?!" Seeing him like this, I couldn't help but ask, "Aren't you a grad student? Where's your common sense? By law, you always save the mother first." Bruno froze for a moment, then looked at me lovingly. "Didn't you say you didn't like Raine? As long as we keep the baby and raise it together, you'll feel safe, right? If you want your child, we can have one as long as we get married. In the end, his is all your fault. As long as I don't press charges, you'll be fine. You have no choice but to marry me! Stop throwing a tantrum, okay?" The smug look on his face, as if he had everything under contr

Raine collapsed on the ground, her face frozen in shock as she screamed and clutched her belly. I could see blood trickling down between her legs. Immediately, I pulled out my phone in fright and called an ambulance. At the moment, people around us made their way as well. When life was on the line, I couldn't just stand by and do nothing, no matter how much enmity there was between us. Besides, there were so many eyes watching. As Raine was being loaded into the ambulance, I told Liam to go collect his award. After I insisted several times, he finally relented and didn't come to the hospital with me. Having something like this happen on such a happy day for him made me feel terrible. Liam saw right through me and comforted me. "It's not your fault. She brought this on herself. Just wait, I'll come find you when I'm done!" I nodded. In the ambulance, I called Bruno. The phone rang a few times before he picked up, as if trying to act all high and mighty. "So, you finally de
