Discovering me

Jessica’s story

And then, there it was. With its red eyes, full of hunger, sharp white fangs glowing into the moonlight. The sight of him was horrific. I was standing in front of a vampire, a hungry one. It wasn’t long before he attacked. Just like in my dream, only this time I was able to move, to take a stand for myself. I was getting angrier by the second. I knew that I was no match for him and that my savior was only in my dream; my anger reached an alarming level.

All of the sudden the beast started moving towards me with the specific speed of the vampires. I just knew I was not able to stop him with my bare hands and that made me furious. Never in my life had I let this feeling get to me like right now. I felt like it could be the only thing that can save me. When the beast lunched at me he knocked me to the ground. In that very moment I closed my eyes and screamed as loud as I could, placing my hands on his squeezing so hard that with all my anger I managed to disintegrate him and turn him into pure ashes. I was stunned. I killed the vampire with my bare hands. No stick through the heart, no beheading just channelizing all my anger was enough.

For a whole hour I paced the park looking for others like him like I was on a killing spree. But he was the only one. That made me wonder, who was he?

And why he wanted to kill me? I drifted like that until I reached my home. I don’t know how but I am glad I did. I needed a hot bath. I could still feel that vampire stench all around me.

I think I sat in my bathtub for half an hour just me and my thoughts. As I curled on my sofa trying to recover from all this, my phone rang. It was Stephanie.

-          Hey Steph!

-          Hey girl! How are you? I haven’t heard from you in the last hours. Are you ok?

-          Not really. Something really strange happened.

-          You are scaring me Jess!

-          Can you come?

I didn’t realize it was almost midnight.

-          Oh, Steph, I am sorry I didn’t think it was so late…

-          No problem, I will be there in ten.

Not even my mother was that worried about me. Actually I don’t remember her that well.  She died when I was very little. Not even today do they know why she died or who killed her. Because someone did kill her, I am sure of that like I am sure of my name. Since my mother’s death, my father left to uncover the mystery of her passing. At least that was what he told me because that was the last time I saw him. Luckily, my aunt from my mother’s side took care of me. She still does. From the moment I realized someone wanted me dead I decided to move on my own, letting my aunt in the safety of her home.

A knock on the front door startled me. I dragged my heavy tired body to open it. Stephanie was framing the entrance with deep concern on her face. Her eyes were fixing me. I let her in, motioning her to get comfortable.

-          Do you want something to drink?

-          A glass of water would be just fine, thank you!

I poured the water and served her immediately. The concerning never left her face as I was trying to tell her what happened.

-          You are telling me that vampires do exist?

By the time she asked me that, I realized I told her everything without taking in consideration the mythical condition of a vampire and that my friend and the rest of the world don’t believe in them.

-          Oh, Steph…

-          Say that again?

-          I know you are in disbelief, I was too. Do you remember my dream?

-          The one you are having every single night? How can I forget it?

-          Well, it was like I was living it. Only this time my savior wasn’t there. It was only me.

-          Are you trying to tell me that you fought with your bare hands with a vampire?

-          Not only that, I also killed him.

-          What? How?

Remembering what had happened made me feel anxious. I was aware that my breathing was again troubling me. I took a deep breath and continued.

-          I don’t really know how I was able to do that. All I remember was that I got very angry and I screamed so loud and by time I touched the vampire’s arms he turned into ashes.

-          The same scream from Paul’s restaurant?

-          That exact same scream except this time it was like I could hurt him with my hands. Like my mind was leading all that.

-          Are you trying to tell me that you got so furious that your mind went ballistic and killed that vampire?

-          That is exactly what I am telling you, Steph!

-          Oh my God, Jess…

-          I don’t think God is involved in this!

I got up and started pacing the living room. I was scared of what happened in the park. But at the same time I was so aware of my powers and confident that I would eventually kill that vampire.

-          How did you feel?

-          I felt so powerful and full of rage that I could have killed an entire army of vampires if I had to.

-          But how can you explain what happened?

-          I didn’t realize I was able to do all those things. Even in the restaurant…

-          Here, take this glass and smash it!

-          What?

-          Come on do it!

-          I don’t think it works that way Steph…

-          Just try!

I took the glass Stephanie had just finished drinking and look at it for some time. I was holding it but nothing happened. My friend was patiently waiting for the magic to take place.

-          Like I said, it doesn’t work that way!

-          Maybe you are right. Back in the park you were afraid and furious at the same time. Maybe your magic has some kind of a trigger.

-          Who knows? The fact is that right now I need to find someone to help me understand my powers. And why not teach me how to use them.

-          I think I know that someone!

-          You do? But how can you…

-          It is a friend of mine, medium, you know…

-          Talking to the dead?

-          Among other things, yes!

The astonishment on my face was so vivid that Steph could not help herself and smiled a little. Until now I never believed in people talking to the dead much less that vampires exist and I need help to understand some powers I don’t know where I got them from. But I know it was time to accept it and start asking questions.

-          Where could we find her?

-          Don’t you worry, she already found us.
