Chapter 3: The Gilded Cage

last update publish date: 2026-09-25 18:35:52

The heavy cardboard garment boxes rested on Claudia’s velvet sofa like sleek, minimalist monoliths.

They displayed the embossed gold logo of a top boutique on Oakhaven’s luxury fashion street, a signature of Amorcio Vioz’s personal stylist.

Claudia stood in her open-concept living area, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

She looked at the delivery with clear disdain.

Her loft, a converted industrial space with exposed brick, steel beams, and large windows, felt completely invaded by those pristine white boxes.

They were a tangible symbol of her father’s influence.

No matter how deep she went into the city’s creative underground, Amorcio’s money and mandates always managed to cross her threshold.

With a sharp exhale, she set her mug down on a rustic wooden coffee table.

She walked over to the sofa and sliced through the designer tape with her drafting utility knife.

Pulling back the layers of crisp, lavender-scented tissue paper, she revealed what lay inside.

The first was a structured, high-necked emerald gown that screamed corporate compliance.

The second was a heavy sapphire silk dress, beautiful but rigid.

It was exactly what Amorcio wanted his daughter to look like: a polished, submissive extension of the Vioz brand.

An ornamental piece of glass designed to sit quietly at a mahogany dining table while men signed away fortunes.

"Unbelievable," Claudia muttered, pulling the sapphire silk from the box.

She held it up against her frame in front of a floor-length mirror.

The dress fit her measurements flawlessly—Amorcio kept a meticulous record of her sizes on file with his personal shoppers—but looking at herself in the reflection made her stomach turn.

She looked like a ghost trapped in high-society armor.

It completely erased the woman who spent her nights covered in charcoal dust, the woman who had stood on a rain-drenched balcony just days ago, completely stripped of expectations, letting her hair fall wild.

At the same time, a beautiful stranger unraveled her sanity.

Her mind flashed to the hotel suite.

She could still feel the heavy phantom sensation of those elegant hands tracing her waistline, pulling her close until there was no space left between them.

That mystery woman hadn't wanted a polished Vioz heiress.

She had wanted Claudia. Raw, breathless, and real.

Claudia tossed the sapphire gown back onto the sofa, a sudden wave of stubborn defiance washing over her.

If she was forced to attend this mandatory circus, she was going to do it on her own terms.

She wasn't going to play the docile daughter anymore.

She marched over to her bedroom closet, bypassing the designer boxes entirely.

Hidden in the very back, sealed in a protective garment bag, was a piece she had purchased herself months ago for an architectural gala she had ultimately boycotted.

It was a sleeveless, backless silk slip dress in a shade of midnight black so deep it almost looked liquid.

It was sharp, asymmetric, and utterly rebellious compared to her father’s conservative tastes.

"Perfect," Claudia whispered, unzipping the bag.

She spent the next hour preparing for the evening with a calculated intensity.

She let her dark hair cascade in natural waves over her shoulders and applied sharp winged eyeliner along with deep crimson lipstick, creating a fierce look to endure her father’s icy glares.

As she slipped into her highest black stiletto heels, she felt like a soldier, armor-clad.

By 7:45, a heavy honk echoed from the street below.

Claudia approached her window and saw a sleek black town car waiting silently by the curb, its tinted windows soaking in the fading evening. Amorcio’s extraction team had arrived.

Claudia grabbed a structured black blazer, throwing it over her shoulders to shield herself from the lingering evening chill, and snatched her clutch. She didn't look back at the discarded designer boxes as she slammed her heavy loft door shut.

The drive across the city was an agonizing exercise in silent anxiety.

As the high-rise buildings of the financial district gave way to the sprawling, gated estates of Oakhaven’s old-money hills, Claudia watched the rain droplets slide horizontally across the tinted glass.

Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs.

She tried to ground herself in her current architectural projects. Still, her mind kept betraying her, drifting back to the scent of jasmine and the haunting memory of amber eyes.

The town car finally slowed down, turning over a massive stone bridge and passing through the towering iron gates of the Vioz Estate.

The property was a monolithic display of wealth—a sprawling neo-classical mansion surrounded by manicured topiary gardens and illuminated by harsh, grand spotlights.

To the public, it was a masterpiece.

To Claudia, it was the prison she had spent her entire adult life trying to break out of.

The car crawled up the winding driveway and came to a smooth stop beneath the grand portico.

A uniformed valet immediately opened Claudia's door, holding a wide umbrella overhead.

"Welcome home, Ms. Vioz," the valet murmured respectfully.

"Don't call it that," Claudia said softly, stepping out into the cool air.

She adjusted her blazer, took a deep, stabilizing breath, and climbed the grand marble steps.

The massive double doors were opened from the inside by her father’s head of staff.

The interior of the estate was just as suffocatingly pristine as she remembered—soaring ceilings, crystal chandeliers throwing fractured light across white marble floors, and the faint, oppressive scent of expensive polish and old wax.

"Ah, Claudia. You actually made it."

Claudia froze, her eyes lifting to the grand floating staircase.

Descending the steps was Amorcio Vioz.

At fifty-eight, her father was still an imposing figure.

His silver hair was perfectly coiffed, and he wore a bespoke velvet dinner jacket that looked like it cost more than her studio’s annual lease.

His sharp, dark eyes scanned her from head to toe, instantly locking onto her midnight-black dress.

A subtle, dangerous tightening appeared at the corner of his mouth.

"I see you chose to ignore the wardrobe my stylist curated for you. Black for a celebratory family dinner? You look like you're attending a funeral."

"Maybe I am," Claudia replied smoothly, crossing her arms as she met his icy gaze without flinching.

"What is this grand announcement, Amorcio? Let’s get it over with."

Amorcio reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped into her space with heavy, domineering gravity.

"Patience, Claudia. A legacy cannot be rushed. Our guest of honor has just arrived at the gates. You will stand by my side, you will smile, and you will show her the utmost respect."

"Her?" Claudia raised an eyebrow.

"My future," Amorcio said, a rare, chilling smile stretching across his face as the heavy front doors clicked open once more.

"The woman who will secure the Vioz empire for the next generation. My fiancée."

Claudia turned her head toward the entrance, a cold mask of indifference firmly locked onto her features.

She expected to see a young, superficial socialite or a rigid, older corporate heiress.

The heavy doors swung wide, admitting a gust of cool, rain-scented wind.

A tall, incredibly elegant woman stepped into the grand foyer, handing her damp trench coat to a waiting attendant.

Claudia’s breath caught violently in her throat. Her entire body went completely rigid, the blood draining from her face so fast her vision swam.

Standing under the brilliant fracture of the crystal chandelier was a woman dressed in a flawless, tailored cream silk suit.

Her light brown hair was pinned into an unyielding, chic chignon.

Her posture was a masterclass in aristocratic grace, and as she shifted her gaze into the foyer, a pair of striking, intensely familiar amber eyes locked directly onto Claudia.

The air left the room.

The scent of rain faded, completely overridden by the sudden, suffocating rush of expensive jasmine perfume.

It was her.

The stranger from the balcony.

The woman from the hotel bed.

"Claudia," Amorcio’s voice echoed from a vast distance, entirely oblivious to the tectonic plates shifting beneath his feet.

He stepped forward and reached out to take the woman's hand.

"Allow me to introduce my fiancée. The managing partner of Valdemort Capital. Hailey Grace Valdemort."

The silence inside the sprawling mahogany room was heavy, suffocating, and instantly lethal. It was a dense, physical vacuum that seemed to suck the remaining warmth from the air, leaving nothing but the cold, clinical scent of luxury linen and old money.Hailey Grace Valdemort stood frozen across the threshold, her hands clutching her leather bag like a shield that had already been pierced through the center. The morning light filtering through the excessive cream silk hangings was harsh, painting the room in a slate-gray clarity that left no room for illusion. Her amber eyes locked onto Claudia’s bare, rain-scabs-marked shoulders, then flicked downward to the blonde hair spilled across the silk pillows beside her.Hailey could not define what exactly she was feeling. It was a sensation that transcended mere jealousy, a toxic, paralyzing numbness that seeped into her very bones and slowed her pulse to a dull, heavy thrum. Her world seemed ready to shatter at any given moment, the fra

The fragile liberation of the studio didn't even survive the weekend. By Sunday afternoon, the clinical, multi-billion-dollar gravity of reality crashed back down on Hailey’s shoulders with a devastating force. A single phone call from her family’s desperate attorneys, detailing the imminent federal indictment of her brothers if the Vioz liquidity injection wasn’t finalized by Monday morning, tore through her remaining resistance. She had built another fortress, colder and more impenetrable than before. She sent Claudia a single, bloodless text message: I cannot let my family burn for a beautiful mistake. The press release goes live tomorrow. Do not contact me again outside of professional parameters. The rejection hit Claudia like a structural collapse. Her protective devotion, her reckless vows to burn her father's empire to the ground—all of it was reduced to rubble by a single, clinical paragraph.By midnight, Claudia was drowning herself in a bleak, high-society lounge on the edg

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 18: The Collapse of Structural Integrity

For two agonizing hours, the drafting table remained a psychological minefield. Daniella had extracted every ounce of satisfaction she could from the arrangement, dropping laced comments and heavy touches, while Hailey endured the slow-motion execution of her own soul. But high-society games needed an audience, and eventually the warehouse's suffocating atmosphere grew too dense even for a Silvantez. "Well," Daniella said, sliding her leather folder off the desk with a smooth, synchronized movement. She checked her diamond-encrusted watch, her eyes throwing a final, predatory glance between the two women. "I think the preliminary parameters are perfectly understood. I’ll report back to Tito Amorcio that we are making... exceptional progress. See you tonight, Claud." She leaned in, deliberately pressing a lingering kiss to Claudia’s jawline—one that Claudia allowed solely to keep her gaze anchored on Hailey’s shattering composure—before spinning on her heel. The heavy metal studi

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 17: The Crucible of Friction

The rain against the high warehouse windows shifted into a heavy, rhythmic drone, sealing the three women inside the concrete studio. Daniella tossed her wet designer umbrella onto a nearby leather chair, her heels striking a slow, deliberate cadence as she approached the drafting table. She laid the sleek folder of environmental reports directly over the topographic maps, her movements calculated, her eyes gleaming with a predatory focus. "Tito Amorcio was incredibly specific about the cliff stabilization," Daniella said, her voice smooth and airy, though it carried an unmistakable edge of malice. She leaned over the table, her gaze intentionally dropping to Claudia’s right wrist, where Hailey’s embroidered gold initials were stained a deep, dried rust. "He doesn't want anything sliding out of place. He likes things... anchored." Hailey stood rigidly by her stool, her charcoal wool jacket buttoned tight, her fingers laced neatly over her leather clutch. Her corporate mask was

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 16: The Architecture of Deception

The air inside Claudia’s warehouse studio was heavy with the scent of rain, damp concrete, and the sharp tang of graphite. At exactly eight o'clock, the relentless morning downpour hammered against the high, unwashed windows, creating a dull roar that failed to drown out the suffocating silence settled over the drafting table. The land surveys and blank vellum sheets for the new coastal property were spread out like a battle plan between them. Nachoz had left minutes earlier to coordinate with the site surveyors, leaving Claudia and Hailey entirely alone in the cavernous, minimalist space.Claudia stood over the table, her dark hair pinned back loosely with a wooden drafting stylus. Her midnight-black silk dress had been replaced by a pair of faded denim jeans and an oversized black canvas work shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal her forearms. Wrapped tightly around her right wrist was Hailey’s white linen handkerchief. The crimson bloodstain had dried into a deep, rust-colored kno

  • Forbidden Ties    Chapter 15: The Geometry of Suspicion

Daniella Silvantez swirled the lukewarm dregs of her espresso, her gaze fixed entirely on the empty corridor leading to the cafe's private restrooms. To anyone else, Daniella was a creature of pure high-society luxury—a flawless, unbothered heiress who navigated Oakhaven’s elite circles with the effortless grace of a runway model. But beneath the diamonds and the designer label armor lay a razor-sharp intuition that had kept her alive and relevant in a world built on deception. She knew Claudia Vioz better than anyone else in this city. She had spent two turbulent years memorizing the cadence of Claudia’s laughter, the exact shade of dark fury in her eyes when her father cornered her, and the protective walls she built around her heart. And right now, those walls were structural anomalies. They weren't making sense. "The Valdemort portfolio is a sound investment, of course," Amorcio was saying, his voice a low, booming hum as he sliced through his flawless eggs Benedict. He was en
