Point of view: Kade

“You have no idea what you’re standing next to,” Selene said, loud enough that half the gathered hall turned toward us, her voice cutting cleanly through the celebration my father had insisted on throwing two nights before the wedding. “Ask her, Kade. Ask her what her mother’s real name was.”

The music stuttered into silence. Every eye in the hall turned toward Wren, who stood frozen beside me in a gown too fine for the storm suddenly breaking over her.

“Selene,” I warned, l

Point of view: Wren“Say that again,” Alpha Magnus said, low and dangerous, staring at his son standing between me and an entire hall of armed guards. “Say it again, and understand there is no version of this pack left for you once those words leave your mouth.”Kade did not move, did not flinch, his whole body a wall between me and everyone in that hall who wanted me gone. “I said touch her, and you go through me first. I meant every word of it.”The silence that followed felt like it lasted a lifetime, every wolf in the hall frozen, waiting to see whether their Alpha would truly turn on his own heir over a girl none of them had wanted here in the first place. Somewhere behind me I could feel Briar’s hand pressed against my back, steadying me the same way she had steadied me our whole lives.“You would choose her,” my father in law said slowly, “over your own pack. Over everything I built to keep us safe after your mother died.”“I would choose the truth,” Kade said, “over a law buil

I deserve to know why. Everyone in this hall deserves to know why.”“You’re hurting,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady even as the whole room watched us. “But this is

Point of view: Wren“This belonged to your mother,” Briar said, pressing a small tarnished locket into my palm with hands that trembled slightly. “I found it sewn into the lining of your travel bag. I think she hid it there on purpose, Wren, in case you ever needed it.”I turned the locket over slowly, my fingers tracing an engraving worn nearly smooth by time, the same crest I had now seen twice in three days stamped onto weapons meant to hurt me. My chest tightened painfully.“She knew,” I whispered. “She knew this would find me eventually.”“Open it,” Briar urged gently.Inside, a tiny folded piece of paper had been pressed against a faded portrait too small and worn to make out clearly. I unfolded the paper with careful fingers, my heart hammering as I recognized my mother’s handwriting, elegant and hurried, like she had written it in a moment she knew was running out.If you are reading this, my daughter, then the truth has finally found you the way I always feared it would. I wa

Point of view: Kade“They didn’t take anything. They didn’t kill anyone outright. They just wanted us to know they could,” Ronan said, laying the torn cloth across the war table beside the silver blade from the woods, both marked with the same worn crest. “This wasn’t an attack meant to weaken us, Kade. This was a message.”My father paced the length of the war room, fury barely contained beneath his usual composed authority, senior wolves crowded along the walls waiting for orders that hadn’t come yet. “A message from wolves who were supposedly wiped out eighteen years ago. Somebody explain to me how that’s possible.”“It’s possible,” I said carefully, “if the Vane pack was never actually wiped out at all.”The room went silent. My father turned toward me slowly, something dangerous settling into his expression. “Careful, son. That sounds dangerously close to sympathy for the pack that killed your mother.”“I’m not sympathizing,” I said, holding his gaze even though every instinct to

Point of view: Wren“Dance with me,” Kade said, appearing at my side so suddenly I nearly dropped the goblet Briar had pressed into my hand ten minutes earlier. “Before my father decides tonight’s dinner needs another political interrogation disguised as small talk.”I glanced across the crowded hall at Alpha Magnus, deep in conversation with a cluster of visiting elders, and decided Kade’s offer sounded significantly better than the alternative. “You’re going to have to teach me. Omegas don’t exactly get invited to practice this particular skill.”“Then it’s a good thing I’m patient,” he said, holding out his hand. The hall had been transformed for the evening, candlelight and pack banners and the kind of formal music I had only ever heard drifting faintly from windows I wasn’t allowed near. I let him lead me onto the floor, painfully aware of Selene’s eyes finding us almost immediately, and of Ronan positioned near the doors like a sentry watching for threats that could come from an

Point of view: Kade“I could arrest her right now and end this whole impossible situation before it gets either of us killed,” Ronan said, dropping the survivor list onto my desk like it burned to hold. “Tell me why I shouldn’t.”I looked up from the treaty documents I had been pretending to read for the last hour. “Because you already made your choice in that archive room, and we both know it.”“I made a choice to wait,” he corrected, pacing the length of my study with the restless energy of a man arguing with himself more than with me. “That’s not the same as making a choice to keep protecting her forever. Your father is not a patient wolf, Kade. Selene arrived a day early and already smells something off. How long do you think we actually have?”“I don’t know,” I admitted. “Days, maybe. If we’re lucky.”“And if we’re not lucky?”I didn’t have an answer for that, because every answer I could imagine ended with Wren standing in front of my father’s judgment, and my chest went tight j
