Chapter 75: Going back.

last update publish date: 2026-10-09 23:09:57

ALESSIA’s POV.

“An email, girl! From school!” I heard Kendra shout from the sitting room and immediately dried my wet hands on my trousers and rushed to check my laptop. Kendra watched me expectantly, looking like she’d already read the email herself.

My eyes widened at the message before me, and my heart gave a sudden leap. “So? What does it say? Are you going or not?” Kendra asked, wiggling her shoulders impatiently. My lips felt numb.

Everything came rushing back to me.

Zane.

Fucking Zane.

ALESSIA’s POV. The salon smelled like expensive shampoo and hot tools. Soft music played somewhere in the background, low enough that it barely registered over the quiet snip of scissors and the occasional hum of a blow dryer.I sat in the chair with a black cape fastened around my neck, staring at my reflection while the stylist ran her fingers through my hair, assessing its length and condition. Behind me, Kendra had claimed the waiting chair like it was her personal throne, her legs crossed and her phone already out, ready to document every second of this.“I’m just saying,” she said, not looking up from her screen, “if you’re going to do something this drastic, you better not chicken out halfway through.”“I’m not chickening out.” I narrowed my eyes at her reflection.“You said that last time you tried bangs.”“Those were a mistake, and we don’t talk about them.” I pointed a warning finger at her.Kendra grinned, finally lifting her eyes. “This is different. This feels… intention

ZANE’s POV. “Jaxon, if you shoot that puck at my head one more time, I’m reporting you to the fucking authorities.”I glanced at Mason, who was standing a few feet away with his stick resting against his shoulder and the most offended expression I’d ever seen on a grown man’s face. His eyebrows were pulled tight, his mouth twisted like I’d just pissed in his protein shake.“Then stop standing where I shoot.” I seethed back at him and he retorted. “I’m your teammate, you dickhead.”“Tragic.” I snorted. Jace snorted from beside the goal, his shoulders shaking as he tried and failed to keep a straight face. Mason shot him a glare so sharp it could’ve cut glass, which only made Jace laugh harder. I smirked and turned back to the puck, tapping it once with my stick before sending it across the ice. It slipped past the goalie and slammed into the back of the net with a clean, satisfying thud.“Beautiful,” I muttered under my breath.“God, I hate you,” Mason called, dragging a gloved hand

The way my heart still reacted to the mere mention of his name. The way I’d cried almost every night since we’d arrived in California two weeks ago. And, fuck, the way I couldn’t stop rereading our old messages, as if staring at the words long enough would somehow change how everything had ended.I read the email aloud. “Dear Miss Bennett, I hope this email finds you well. As your California showcase assignment approaches its conclusion, we’d like to arrange your return to campus fo

ALESSIA’s POV. I didn’t smile back right away. The cocky little curve of his mouth threw me off more than I wanted to admit.Caleb West stayed seated like he had all the time in the world, one arm resting on the back of the chair, green eyes steady on me. Up close, he looked even more put-together than he had on the ice—still messy dark hair, still that easy posture, but the intensity in his stare was sharper now that it wasn’t focused on a puck.“You looked like you were about to drown in that mug,” he said. “Figured someone should interrupt.”I raised an eyebrow. “And that someone had to be you?”He shrugged, still half-smiling. “Lucky timing.”I glanced past him toward the rink. The noise was still there, distant now. Whistles. Skates. Coaches barking corrections. Life continuing like nothing had cracked open two days ago on a porch three thousand miles away.“You always walk up to random girls staring into cold coffee?” I asked.“Only the ones who spent the morning photographing

ALESSIA’s POV. The last two days were a blur. I couldn’t stop replaying that early morning on the porch—the way Zane had looked me dead in the eye and ended us. It left an ache that refused to quiet. Kendra only knew the surface of it. I still hadn’t told her everything. I wasn’t ready.I stared at the unfamiliar ceiling for a long minute before pushing myself up. Half-unpacked boxes sat on the marble floor like accusations. I walked past them and headed for the bathroom. The girl in the mirror looked like a stranger. Weak. Exhausted. Angry at herself for trusting so completely. Dark circles sat beneath my eyes. My hair was a ruffled mess, and my lips were cracked from biting them raw the night before while trying not to make a sound.I gripped the edge of the sink until my knuckles went white.Fuck.Nothing was working. My chest felt hollow, and I felt stupid for every single hope I’d allowed myself to have. I splashed cold water over my face, washed my hair, and went back to the be

ZANE’s POV. I hit the gas hard. Rain slammed the windshield in thick sheets, blurring the fucking street. My hands locked around the wheel, knuckles white. My jaw was so tight it hurt. I didn’t look back. Not once. If I did—if I saw her still standing there in the middle of the lawn—I knew I’d stop. And I couldn’t fucking stop.I thought this would feel lighter. Like I’d finally put something down. Cut it clean. Be free of it before camp, before the NHL, before everything that actually mattered. It didn’t.The second her house disappeared, the weight in my chest got worse. Heavier. Like I’d just made everything ten times uglier and there was no taking it back.My own voice kept looping. It was nothing serious.A fling. You should’ve listened to them.I said that shit like I meant it. Had to. Make it ugly enough that she wouldn’t come after me. Ugly enough that she wouldn’t hope. Ugly enough that I wouldn’t either. But it was pure fucking bullshit.I knew it the second the words left
