The foyer lights flicked on.

When Dad walked in holding Ryland Jones' hand, his gaze landed on me. A satisfied smile curled across his face. "Good boy. I'm glad you know you were wrong."

I stayed kneeling without moving.

Ryland pouted. "Dad, Cal's so dirty. He looks like a homeless man."

Dad ruffled Ryland's hair, his voice gentle. "Don't be rude, Ryland. Callum knows he was wrong now. He'll behave from now on."

He turned to me and gave his order. "Go back to your room and clean yourself up. And don't come out without my permission."

I nodded stiffly, pushed myself to my feet, and headed upstairs like a machine.

The next day at lunch, a spread lay across the dining table.

Dad kept placing food onto Ryland's plate as he said warmly, "Have more of the fish. It's good for brain development. Have some ribs, too. They're your favorite."

Ryland chewed on a rib and mumbled through the food, "Thanks, Dad."

I sat quietly at the side without touching my cutlery, waiting for instructions. Dad finally glanced at me and said flatly, "Have your vegetables. No complaining."

"Okay, Dad."

I picked up my fork and took some greens from the salad bowl. The vegetables had long gone stale. They were wilted, soggy, and mushy against my teeth.

I kept chewing and swallowing repeatedly. It wasn't until Dad finally said, "That's enough if you're full," that I put down my cutlery and straightened my back.

"Ryland, look at how obedient Callum is," Dad remarked. "He eats whatever he's given without complaining. You should learn from him and stop being picky. Now, eat your fish."

He said it so casually, without the slightest hint of praise in his voice.

Ryland let out a dissatisfied huff. Then, he picked up a bowl of soup on the table and held it out toward me. "Cal, you can have my soup."

The moment he said that, he tilted the bowl. Hot soup splashed onto my arm and streamed down my sleeve.

"You're so dumb, Cal. You can't even catch a bowl," Ryland said provocatively, smugness written all over his face.

The heat scalded my skin, yet I showed no reaction at all.

Dad hurriedly grabbed a few napkins and wiped Ryland's hands first before turning toward me. "What's going on with you, Callum? You couldn't even catch the bowl. What if the soup had burned Ryland instead?

"You're the older brother. You're supposed to protect him. Understand?"

I nodded mechanically. "I understand, Dad. I'll protect Ryland."

Later, Dad beckoned our butler, Sebastian Smith, over and told him to take me upstairs to clean up. I followed Sebastian back to his room.

As he helped me change out of my clothes, he froze in shock at the sight of the dark purple bruises covering my arms and back. "Callum, where did you get these bruises from? They're serious."

I stood there blankly, my eyes lifeless.

He asked several more times, but I gave no response at all. In the end, he shook his head helplessly and went to look for Dad.

"Callum's covered in dark bruises, sir. I don't know where they came from, and he won't answer me."

Dad was peeling an apple for Ryland. At that, he replied dismissively without even looking up.

Mom placed my photograph in front of the gravestone. It was a picture taken shortly after I had first returned home. In the photo, I wore a shy smile, my eyes full of hope for the future.Little did anyone know that hope would eventually turn into a nightmare.Dad crouched before the gravestone and gently caressed the face in the photograph. Tears splattered onto the stone, leaving behind small dark patches."Callum, darling, forgive me for all the sins I've committed. I shouldn't have played favorites, shouldn't have modded you, and shouldn't have treated you so harshly. You deserve none of the suffering you endured…"Could you forgive me, please? There hasn't been a second in my life when I wasn't consumed by regret over my choices…"He kept talking endlessly, apologizing from daylight until nightfall. Even when his throat gave out and no sound could come out anymore, he refused to leave.Mom stood quietly nearby, staring at my picture with overflowing grief and regret.Once D

Dad slowly crouched down again, his voice turning gentle, just like the way he used to speak to Ryland."I brought your favorite candy, Callum. Come out and eat some, okay? I won't punish you anymore, nor will I force you to obey my instructions. You can do whatever you want, and I won't play favorites again."I quietly floated in front of him, watching him speak to empty air as remorse and madness filled his eyes.Several times, I almost thought he could actually see me. In the end, though, he was only mumbling to nothingness, his gaze hollow and unfocused.Later, Mom brought him home. His condition never improved. Every day, he went into my room, sat on my bed, touched my pillow, and called out for me."Callum, time to wake up. I made you breakfast… Callum, stop standing there as punishment. Come over here. I'll massage your legs. You must be tired from standing all night…"Callum, I've already straightened Ryland out for what he did to you. From now on, I'll protect you. No on

"We spoiled you and gave you everything, yet you turned around to harm and frame him?" Mom continued. "Do you know? Callum is dead, and it's because of you and your dad!""C-Cal is dead?"Ryland froze. His crying stopped abruptly, his face full of disbelief. "That's impossible! How could he be dead? He was just fine yester—""He's been dead for at least a week!" Mom screamed, her voice cracking under the weight of her rage and grief."For the sake of protecting you, your dad sent him to undergo illegal mods! He died in a traffic accident because of your dad's command. Even after death, he was controlled by that chip and was treated like a puppet for you two to order around!"Ryland began trembling violently. His face turned deathly pale as he shook his head repeatedly. "I didn't mean it… I only wanted Dad to scold him and love me more… I never wanted him to die. Mom, I'm sorry. Can you forgive me?""Forgive you?"Mom let out a cold laugh, her eyes filled with disappointment and

"When Callum first came back, I resisted him," Dad confessed through tears."I thought he was going to take away everything that belonged to Ryland. And he had a wild personality. He talked back all the time. I was afraid he wouldn't accept Ryland, that he'd ultimately do something to hurt him."So, when I heard about that modification organization that could make children obedient, I… I lost my mind and sent him there.""You shouldn't have, you idiot!"Mom was trembling with anger, her entire body shaking. She raised her hand, wanting to slap him, but the sight of his miserable state—tears and snot running down his face—made her stop."I know you love Ryland, but Callum is our real son! How could you do this to him?"I floated nearby, silently listening to their argument. Not a single emotion rose inside me.I couldn't understand Dad's reasoning for his favoritism, nor could I ever accept it.My thoughts drifted back to the moment I first learned I had been the real missing he

"Since his bones and neural pathways were illegally modified, the implanted chip received external commands and controlled his movements and speech, even after death. That's why he was capable of functioning despite being deceased."The doctor stepped forward with a pair of forceps. Carefully, almost cautiously, he reached behind my neck and removed the control chip embedded there.Almost instantly, my body, which had still appeared mostly intact moments ago, began decomposing at a terrifying speed. My skin turned dark purple and shriveled rapidly.Within seconds, my flesh collapsed inward, and I no longer looked human.Dad was horrified by the scene. His pupils contracted violently as he let out a shrill scream. His legs gave out beneath him, and he collapsed onto the floor."H-How did this happen? Callum, darling, I didn't mean it… Is this a prank? Please make it stop…"At that moment, I felt light. Weightless as I floated upward, I drifted free from the rotting shell beneath m

"That's impossible! No way! How could he be dead?" Dad roared. "Look, he's still talking to me! And he walked over here from the car! Y-Your device thing-y has to be wrong!"The nurse was so petrified that she took half a step back. "But it's true that he has no pulse! And neither does he have body heat. He's as cold as ice!"The attending physician frowned deeply, equally disturbed by what he was seeing."No heartbeat or respiration. And the lividity has spread across the arms and neck. Based on the condition of the body, he's been deceased for at least a week. Of course, the most bizarre thing of all is that he can still walk and talk…"Dad rushed over and grabbed my shoulders tightly, his fingers digging into my arms. "Callum, look at me! You're not dead, right? Tell them! Tell the doctors that you're not dead!"Without a proper reaction, I simply repeated, "Dad, I will give Ryland my blood as instructed.""Doc, check him again! Your equipment has to be glitching or something!
