Lena’s POV

I tear through the house like a madwoman.

“Dante!” His name rips out of me, echoing off marble walls. I need to speak to him. Why would he do this? Why take Marco?

I hear his voice coming from his office. I head towards the door and shove it open.

I notice four men sitting across Dante when I step in, one of whom I recognize as the old man from our engagement dinner.

All four pairs of eyes snap to me. The room goes dead silent.

I’m suddenly aware of my bare feet.

  • Forced bride of mafia king   CHAPTER NINETY ONE: MENDING

LENA’S POV I stare at my reflection in the mirror, the navy dress I have on hugs me in just the right places. My clutch is in my hand and I’ve opened and closed it three times like there’s something in there that’s going to give me an answer. *Don’t go.* *Go. You need this.* *It’s just coffee.* *It’s a betrayal.* *Dante betrayed you first.* *That doesn’t make this right.* I press my palms to my face and breathe, trying to cancel out the thoughts in my head. “You’re an adult,” I tell the mirror. “You can have one afternoon, to just feel normal.” I take another breath. “It’s not anything bad. It’s just a break from this house.” The house that feels like a cage. I grab my lipstick and swipe it on. The red is too bold. I blot it with a tissue until it’s just a stain. “Just coffee,” I whisper again. I’m reaching for the door when I see movement in the mirror. Diego. He’s standing in the doorway, leaning against the frame with his hands sho

  • Forced bride of mafia king   CHAPTER NINETY: SECRET PLANS

LENA’S POV I reach for the phone with shaky hands and then pull back. What if it’s one of the Commission? What could they possibly have to tell? I can’t take another problem right now, but I also can’t cower in fear just from a phone call. I continue staring at it until it stops. Then it starts again. “God,” I whisper. “Just answer it.” I can do this, I can do this, I will not hide from a phone call. I swipe and then bring it to my ear. “Hello?” My voice comes out small. “Well. What took you so long to answer, Mrs. Moretti?” I pause as I hear a familiar thick Russian accent. Kovacs. The man from the garden. The one who sat by me when I was crying. My stomach drops. “How did you get this number?” He laughs. “Your number? Darling, it was very easy to trace. I expected more security. With who your husband is, I thought it would take me a week. Took me twenty minutes.” I sit down hard on the edge of the bed. “That’s not possible. T

  • Forced bride of mafia king   CHAPTER EIGHTY NINE: TAKING A STAND

LENA’S POV The hallway to the guest wing feels longer at night. My slippers sound loudly against the marble floor as I move towards the east wing. My mother’s text is still glowing on my phone screen. *Come to my room. Now.* I tell myself it’s because she hadn’t seen me all evening. Maybe this is just a mother checking on her daughter. God, I hope that’s all it is. I finally stop in front of the guest room where she and Marco moved in. I knock once. “Come in,” Mom says through the door. I push the door open and step in. She’s sitting on the edge of the bed closest to the window, back straight, pearls at her throat, robe tied neatly at the waist. Marco on the other hand is pacing next to the other bed. He’s in sweats and a tee. Both of them look up when I walk in. “Lena,” Mom says. She pats the space beside her. “Come.. come sit with me.” I close the door behind me. “Is everything okay? You texted pretty late.” “Sit,” she says again, soft

  • Forced bride of mafia king   CHAPTER EIGHTY EIGHT: PUTTING THE PLAN IN MOTION

DANTE’S POV The room smells like leather, cigar smoke, and old money. I take a sip of my drink, feeling bored out of my mind. Valentino is talking. Or at least his mouth is moving. I’ve been staring at the same knot in the table for the last ten minutes and I have no idea what he’s said. All I can think about is Lena and the pain in her eyes when she left the room. A pain I caused. And I can’t even take it back now. Not in front of them. “...and that’s why I’m telling you, a man needs options,” Valentino says. His voice drags me back. I catch the last sentence. “...a second wife. Keeps the first one in line.” Bile rises in my throat at the thought of another woman’s name next to mine, there’s only been one woman for me, there’s only ever been Lena. But I don't say anything. I just take a slow sip of my drink and let the whiskey burn. “Yeah,” I say. “I’m already tired of her.” Valentino laughs and lights a cigar. The smoke curls up between us. “That’s the spirit

  • Forced bride of mafia king   CHAPTER EIGHTY SEVEN: A NOT SO MEET CUTE

LENA’S POV I run as fast as my feet can carry me. The garden doors slam behind me and the cool night air hits my face. I don’t stop until I’m past the hedges, where no one from inside can see me. My chest starts heaving as my hands shake “Obedient.” “Remember her place.” “Wife who listens.” His words keep on playing on a loop in my head. I press the heels of my hands to my eyes. I’m not going to cry. I’m not. But the tears come anyway. How could he? The man I’ve spent the past seven months with, who has shown me nothing but love and respect. Was any of it real? Or was it all just to get me to fall in line? God! I’m just so tired of doubting every little thing about our relationship. One minute he loves me and the next he sees me as just his wife. I can’t believe I gave him all of me and he’s left me with nothing but pain. He was the one person I expected to support me no matter what. But I guess my mother was right, you can never trust a man. I drag my sl

  • Forced bride of mafia king   CHAPTER EIGHTY SIX: PRETENSE

DANTE’S POV I sit in the car silently as we get closer to our destination. Lena sits next to me, crossing her arms stiffly while staring out the window. She hasn’t said a word to me since breakfast today, I wonder what is going through her head. I just wish I could get in. I should say something, about what happened this morning and about her breakdown. But instead, I just keep my eyes on the road. I need to maintain a persona for this plan to work out. “We’re here,” I say when we pull up at Ravenite. It’s one of the most exclusive clubs in the whole country and its members are mostly people in the mafia or dirty politicians. The place is packed with men in suits of all ages. I turn to Lena but she doesn’t move. “Lena.” “What?” “You’re coming in with me.” She turns to me slowly. “Why?” ‘Why’ I can’t even believe she’s asking me why. How do I explain to her that she has to be her tonight for the
