Chapter 1

Before I could process what was happening, Cecilia Bennett's "one true love", Elliot Lawson, continued with his dramatic outburst.

"No wonder you barely contacted me while I was overseas! You already had someone new by your side, and you completely forgot about the promise you made to me!

"And now that I'm finally back, you still can't bear to get rid of this replacement. Fine! If that's how it is, I'll leave so you two can have your happily ever after."

I stared at Elliot's furious expression, completely dumbfounded. I just couldn't make sense of what was happening.

I was nothing more than Cecilia's private chef, hired for my exceptional cooking skills. She paid me an annual salary of 800,000 dollars to live in her mansion and prepare her meals, all to help get her stomach problems under control.

So when exactly had I become her lover? And not just her lover—a replacement?

Even Cecilia frowned at Elliot's accusation. She immediately shot back, "Elliot, what are you talking about? You were only overseas for three months, and I flew out to see you every single week. How is that 'barely contacting you'?"

She gestured toward me. "And this is Damian Brooks, the private chef I hired to work here. He's not my lover, replacement, or whatever nonsense you're talking about."

"A chef?" Elliot's disappointment deepened. "He's way too young to even qualify as a chef."

Then he looked from my white chef's jacket to his own white shirt.

"I like wearing white, and he's wearing white too. If he's not my replacement, then what is he? Ceci, why are you lying to me?"

My eye twitched at his comment as I glanced down at my white chef's jacket, then at his shirt.

It didn't make sense, especially when the only thing those two outfits had in common was that they were both white.

With a sigh, I finally decided to speak up.

"Mr. Lawson, I really am a chef. If you don't believe me, you can check the kitchen. I've got a chicken stew simmering on the stove right now."

But Elliot immediately raised his voice. "That's a lie! Even if there is chicken stew in the kitchen, you probably made it ahead of time just to fool me!"

Cecilia let out a helpless sigh. "What will it take for you to believe that Damian is actually a chef?"

"Send him away, and I'll believe you," Elliot said with the confidence of someone who had seen right through their entire scheme.

"That's how it always works in the novels. The one true love and the replacement can never coexist. Sooner or later, the replacement takes the one true love's place."

He looked at Cecilia with complete seriousness, saying, "Ceci, I don't want to lose you. So he has to go."

Cecilia's frown deepened at Elliot's words.

Then she looked at me, hesitation flickering across her face.

I had only just managed to get her stomach problems halfway under control, and she clearly wasn't ready to give up my cooking.

But if she refused to send me away, Elliot obviously wasn't going to let the matter drop.

After a moment of deliberation, Cecilia finally made up her mind.

She walked over to me and lowered her voice.

"Damian, I know our contract requires you to live here, but given the circumstances… I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to move into one of my apartments nearby."

She paused before adding, "I'll cover your commuting expenses at double the usual rate, and I'll compensate you with an additional three months' salary. Does that sound fair?"

My eyes immediately lit up.

Cecilia's apartment was only five minutes away from the mansion.

Even so, I'd get double the usual commuting reimbursement. Not only that, but I'd also receive an extra three months' salary on top of that.

What a deal!

I nodded without hesitation. "No problem, Ms. Bennett. Do you need me to move out right away?"

As I spoke, I pulled out my phone and started searching for a moving company.

Cecilia stared at me, momentarily taken aback. Apparently, she hadn't expected me to agree so eagerly.

When her eyes met mine, I saw the emotions in them. Suddenly, my heart began to pound. We'd spent nearly every day together for the past six months. Then, one day, Cecilia walked into my restaurant carrying a huge bouquet of roses.I didn't dare accept them right away.Instead, I looked at her and asked, "Ms. Bennett, do you know what it means when someone gives you roses?"She nodded without hesitation."It means I'm trusting you with my heart, my future, and, eventually, all my money." She smiled. "So… are you willing to take me?"Who could say no to a deal like that?I laughed and nodded. My relationship with Cecilia moved quickly, and before long, we decided to get married. We picked a beautiful weekend for the wedding and celebrated with our family and friends, and even many regulars from my restaurant.I wore my suit, stood at the altar, and went over my wedding vows one last time while Martha stood nearby, wiping away tears."You have no idea how happy I was when I

"What exactly is going on, Elliot?" Cecilia demanded.Elliot stared at the photos and listened to the recording. The color drained from his face. But even then, he refused to admit the truth. "It was Damian!" he insisted. "He set me up! All of this is fake!""The medical records have your signature. And that's your voice in the recording." Cecilia's voice was heavy with disappointment. "How can you still deny it?"Cecilia looked at him for a long moment before speaking again. "I really misjudged you all these years."She turned toward Martha and said, "Martha, pack his things. He's leaving tonight. From now on, he's not allowed to set foot in this house again."Elliot froze for a moment. Then, strangely enough, he started laughing."I get it now," he said. "We've reached the part of the story where the stand-in comes between the male and female leads, making their misunderstanding even worse."He looked at Cecilia with absolute confidence."Just wait. You'll regret kickin

After hanging up, I opened my laptop and posted a screenshot of the employment contract I had signed with Cecilia. The contract clearly listed my position as her private chef, along with my annual salary. Then I uploaded receipts for every luxury item shown in Elliot's video. Each receipt included the purchase date and price. Every single item had been purchased with my own bank card after I started working for Cecilia. Along with the evidence, I added a short statement."My name is Damian Brooks. I was hired by Cecilia Bennett as a private chef with an annual salary of 800,000 dollars. I am not anyone's 'stand-in.'"The luxury items shown in the video were purchased entirely with my own legitimate income. The claim that I 'fled with valuable possessions' is completely false."The evidence speaks for itself. I ask everyone to verify the facts before spreading false or misleading information."The moment I posted my clarification, the internet went completely silent. But momen

This wasn't the first time Elliot had dragged me into one of his ridiculous schemes.First, there was the whole "stand-in" misunderstanding. Then came the disaster at the welcome-home party. And now, this latest attempt to frame me.I came here to cook for an annual salary of 800,000 dollars, not to star in some over-the-top soap opera."Ms. Bennett, I accept your apology, but I've decided to resign."Cecilia froze for a moment before hurriedly trying to change my mind. "I can increase your salary. And I promise I'll deal with Elliot. I won't let him bother you again.""It's not about the money." I shook my head. "I'm just a chef. I want to cook in peace. I don't want to spend every day being treated like some villain and dragged into one ridiculous mess after another."No matter how much Cecilia tried to convince me to stay, my decision remained firm. In the end, she let out a resigned sigh. "All right. I respect your decision. I'll make sure your final paycheck and severance

The doctor's hand tightened around the card, a conflicted look crossing his face.Elliot, however, seemed convinced that everything was going according to plan. Without a second thought, he ordered the doctor to wheel him out of the examination room.Outside, the moment Cecilia spotted Elliot being wheeled out, she hurried over."Doctor, how is Elliot? Is his injury serious? Should we contact a renowned specialist overseas and have them fly in to perform the surgery right away?"The doctor opened his mouth, then hesitated, seemingly at a loss for words.Seeing the doctor's hesitation, Elliot shot him an exasperated look, clearly annoyed that he wasn't playing along. Then he put on a weak, pitiful expression and said, "The doctor said the stab wound caused my kidneys to fail. I need a kidney transplant immediately. I think Damian would be a good match. He hurt me, so he should pay the price."With that, he gave me a smug look, clearly convinced that Cecilia would be willing to ta

After a full night's rest, Cecilia was finally feeling much better.I stretched and was just about to leave the mansion when I spotted Elliot pacing outside the front door.Apparently, Cecilia hadn't gone after him the night before, and he was now too embarrassed to walk back inside. The moment he saw me, Elliot stared at me in disbelief. "I was only gone for one night, and Ceci was already so eager to have you come keep her company?"He narrowed his eyes at me. "Damian, you're far more calculating than I thought. But don't get too far ahead of yourself. I have plenty of ways to deal with you!"Every conversation with him made me question my own sanity.I was about to leave when Elliot suddenly seemed to steel himself and stormed back into the mansion."Ceci, I spent the whole night thinking about what happened, and I realize now how ridiculous I was. I also understand that Damian is important to you. I won't ask you to send him away anymore. Will you forgive me?"Seeing Elli
