Chapter 6

Author: Frosty
The moment the accident occurred, Sylvie instinctively moved forward to protect Joshua.

Hayden opened his drowsy eyes and saw what was happening. He crashed heavily against the car window, and the sharp glass cut his forehead.

He was in so much pain that his face crumpled up while his whole body trembled. Painful cries for help escaped his throat.

Blood streamed down, staining his eyes red, and his vision became increasingly blurry.

Before completely losing consciousness, he saw Sylvie lift Joshua.

The door opened and closed, and the two disappeared, leaving only the orange-yellow flames still jumping in his sight...

When he woke up again, Hayden found himself in the hospital. He took a deep breath, and his brain felt like it was being torn apart.

The nurse patted his chest, changing the bandages while lecturing, "You nearly bled to death and couldn't be saved. Your girlfriend was frantic and called every hospital in the city. She also donated a lot of blood to save your life."

Hayden was slightly stunned to hear this.

Just as he was lost in thought, Sylvie walked in. Her expression remained as deadpanned as ever, and her tone contained no hint of concern. "You're awake? Should I call for a doctor?"

Seeing her indifference, Hayden struggled to believe she was the same person the nurse had described.

His parched lips parted, his voice raspy. "The nurse said you donated a lot of blood to save me?"

A flicker of unease crossed Sylvie's eyes, though her voice remained cold. "If I hadn't, you'd be dead, wouldn't you? It was just a way to repay the money you've spent on me over the years. Don't read too much into it."

‘She did it just to repay me. No wonder.’

Hayden replied in acknowledgment, "In that case, we're even now. Let's wipe the slate clean."

The clear intent in his voice to draw a definitive line between them left Sylvie feeling inexplicably flustered.

Watching his frail state, she recalled the things he had said while drunk outside the bar, and her expression darkened.

"Wiping the slate clean? I saved your life, so that settles the debt I owed you. But what about all the suffering you've inflicted on me over these years? How do we settle that?"

Hayden found Sylvie increasingly difficult to understand.

On one hand, she had tried to escape their marriage to break free from his control. On the other, she began demanding a reckoning when he suggested an amicable parting.

He carefully retraced the events of the past four years, struggling to pinpoint any tangible harm he might have caused her beyond the initial proposal of the "kept woman" arrangement and the recurring blow to her self-esteem every time he gave her money.

Could it be that she held a grudge because he tore her and Joshua apart, forcing them to be separated?

After thinking it over, this was the only plausible reason he could come up with.

Just as he decided to make it clear that he intended to call off the wedding and set her free, Joshua walked in to apologize, aggrieved.

"Mr. Gillman, I'm sorry. It was my distraction behind the wheel that caused your accident. This has nothing to do with Sylvie. If you want to blame someone, blame me."

Sylvie, who had worn a stern expression a moment before, softened the instant she saw him. "It's not your fault. I'll take care of everything."

She then glanced back at Hayden, her tone shifting. "Joshua only got his driver's license a few months ago. I was the one who gave him the keys because I didn't want to drive under the influence. He's quite severely hurt too.

“If you feel any resentment, take it out on me. Don't pick on him."

Watching her protectiveness, Hayden remained silent for a long moment before he could not help but ask for clarification. "When have I ever picked on him?"

In the hospital corridor, the glaring red operating-theater light glowed. Sally slapped Sylvie across the face, her voice trembling. "You monster! That's Joshua! Joshua, who grew up with you! How could you say such things to provoke him?"Sylvie did not dodge. Blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. Her eyes were vacant, mumbling to herself, "I didn't mean for him to die...""What's the use of saying that now?" Flora suddenly lunged at her and began to beat her, her sharp nails leaving scratches all over her. "If anything happens to my son, I'll make you pay for it!"The operation light went out.The doctor pushed the door open and stepped out, his face grave as he sighed slightly. "Sorry. We did our best. Our condolences. "The corridor fell silent at those words. Then, Flora began wailing.Sally staggered back a step, while Sylvie suddenly burst into laughter. The laughter grew louder and finally turned into a hysterical fit of laughter. "Karma! This is all karma... We we

Online public opinion was originally overwhelmingly critical of Hayden, but it reversed overnight. The evidence Liam released was like a grenade, shattering Joshua's carefully crafted image of a victim.Chat records, surveillance videos, and even hospital diagnosis certificates showed that Joshua's so-called suicides were carefully designed. The most damning voice recording was of Joshua smugly boasting to his friends on the eve of Sylvie and Hayden's wedding."That fool Sylvie! All I have to do is pretend I'm going to jump off a building, and she'll do whatever I say. I even managed to stop her from going to the wedding to Hayden for me. So what if he's her official boyfriend? He still can't compare to me."The insults suddenly turned on Joshua, with everyone piling on him at once.Sylvie was just stepping out of the airport when she received the news.A call from her assistant interrupted her as she was heading to collect her luggage. "Ms. Scott, this is terrible! Mr. Gillman

"You didn't have any evidence either, but you still firmly believed that I bullied Joshua, didn't you?"Hayden’s emotionless words left Sylvie frozen in place. The man in her memory, who always smiled gently at her, now wore an unfamiliar, distant look.Hayden supported Jasmine, lowering his gaze at the trembling Sylvie. "Why are you always so self-righteous? You protected Joshua without any reason before, and you accused me of being vicious when I did nothing. “You simply brushed aside the harm you caused me and said he was still young. I think I made myself clear enough yesterday. Sylvie, who is it that keeps pestering me and making a fuss non-stop?"Sylvie's eyes were red as she opened her mouth to say something, but Hayden was not looking at her. He supported Jasmine back to the mansion and closed the door with a thud.Once they were away from the view of outsiders, Hayden indifferently pushed Jasmine away from him. "Jasmine, who asked you to do all that?” His voice grew c

The moon hung high in the sky. Sylvie followed Hayden and Jasmine, eventually parking her car at the entrance of the Simpson villa. She watched Jasmine help Hayden enter the mansion and not come out for a long time. Seeing the mansion brightly lit inside, she did not dare go up and ring the doorbell. The curtains in the master bedroom upstairs were drawn, and she could vaguely see two figures moving inside. Soon, the lights went out, and the mansion fell into a silent darkness.Sylvie's hand, hanging at her side, tightened, her sharp nails piercing her palm. She did not even feel the pain. She pondered, 'Who is that woman? She has nothing in common with Amelia. Why did Hayden allow her to stay by his side?'Sylvie thought she most resembled Amelia. As long as she could stay by Hayden's side and as long as he could change his mind, she would do anything he asked. Her thoughts were in a complete mess. Her eyes were red, but she dared not approach the mansion. She seemed to have l

"Joshua kept threatening suicide. If I didn't pretend to agree with him, it would have been a life lost... Besides, my family members have always... “Anyway, Hayden, come back with me. This time, I'll ignore them. You're the one I love. I have to be with you. They’ll understand eventually!"The cool night breeze carried Sylvie's words straight to Hayden, sobering him up almost instantly. He looked at the panicked Sylvie in front of him and smiled sarcastically. "Sylvie, you knew all along, didn’t you?"His voice was light, but his words cut like a knife. "Joshua faked those suicide threats."Sylvie's pupils contracted suddenly, and her lips trembled. "I... No, he... He really...""That came later." Hayden interrupted her, his gaze clear and cold. "You kept enabling him again and again, and that is what made him more and more twisted."He straightened his windblown clothes, his voice frighteningly calm. "Just like how you knew I was using you as a substitute, yet you still chose

Business receptions abroad were much the same as back home, filled with people in elegant outfits, clinking glasses, and flowing drinks.Hayden held a bottle of champagne and stood in the corner, watching the unfamiliar faces. No one here knew his past. They only knew that he was the sole heir of Simpson Group. Everyone's gaze toward him contained only respect. No one looked at him with pity or nosiness."Mr. Simpson." Jasmine appeared beside him at some point, holding a cup of water. "Don't drink so much liquor."Her fingertips felt cold as they removed the glass from his hand."Why don't you mingle with the others?""My job is to follow you." She replied as if it were the most natural thing. "Of course, I will follow you wherever you go."Hayden's eyes crinkled slightly. "No need. You can leave work early today."Jasmine looked straight at him and suddenly asked, "Can I ask you a question?""Go ahead.""Do you regret coming to Areland?"Hayden froze. For a moment, he did n
