Unexpected things happen all the time. But nothing prepared me for the surprise I felt when I saw one of the senator’s cars outside the house Anna lived in. What was the senator doing here? I parked outside for a few minutes. As soon as the door opened, I drove away, not wanting to be seen. Michael would know my car even if he saw it in darkness. Later that day, I made inquiries and found out it was not the senator who visited Anna that day. It was the old man. “Something is going on,” Jaime said. “It’s something big but all the staff don’t want to speak about it.” “It’s alright. Just tell my assistant to arrange a casual meeting with Michael. After a few drinks, he’ll probably tell me everything.” Jaime smirked knowingly and stood up. “Sure deal.” A few minutes after Jaime was gone, the door opened. I looked up to see the only person who dared to enter my office without knocking. Kylie, beautiful and sweet. She was wearing an extra citrus perfume that day. Her heels clicked against the floor as she walked towards me, hips swaying from beneath the red body on dress. She looked really sexy. “Reid,” she said, sashaying towards my desk. “You’ve been ignoring me.” I finished signing the document and placed the pen on the table. She sat on the edge of my desk, the lower part of her dress riding up. Leaning forward, she traced the knot of my tie with her fingers. But for some reason, I felt nothing. Kylie usually got me going just by looking at me. “I missed you so much,” she said but I could barely focus on her. All I could think of were those dark brown eyes, the ones of my ex-wife. Sh!t! Why was i thinking of her? “Reid?” Kylie leaned closer. “You don’t have to pretend with me. I know you want it as bad as I do.” Her hand went lower. “Enough,” I said coldly, pushing her thin hand away. “What?” “I said enough.” standing up, I straightened my jacket. “Just stop.” Her expression hardened. “Is this about her again? Yeah I heard she resurfaced. I saw it online.” I didn’t say anything. “You said you were over her,” she continued. “That cheating bitch didn’t deserve you anyway.” “Don’t,” I warned, not liking the direction she was taking. “Why? Because it’s true? She slept with another man and you’re still—” “Get out.” She laughed. “You’re defending her now”“ “Don’t talk about morals. You’re dating your former best friend’s ex-husband. You smiled with her while waiting for your turn so you don’t get to call her a bad person.” Her cheeks became red. “That’s—” “Save it. You want to insult my ex? Fine. But don’t forget who you are while you’re doing it.” Her dainty fingers curled into fists. “You’re unbelievable.” She said as she grabbed her bag and headed toward the door. “You deserve to be miserable.” Hell, maybe she was right about that. I remembered one day I found Anna in the kitchen. She was barefoot, standing on her toes to reach the top shelf of the cabinet. She wore one of my shirts, a blue dress shirt that looked oversized on her body. Sun rays shone on her lush brown hair. “Reid,” she had called over her shoulder. “If I die trying to get this mug, this is on you.” I had laughed before marching towards her and wrapping an arm around her small waist. “I’ve got you,” I’d said. . “You know I’ll always do.” She’d leaned back onto me and smiled. She trusted me, and I trusted her. “You make everything feel safe,” she had whispered. The memory hurt deep as if someone had just twisted a knife in my gut. I drew a deep breath and brought my mind back to the present. I had loved and trusted so much only to repaid with betrayal. This made me slam a hand against the desk. “Damn it.” I hated her and everything that reminded me of her. So why couldn’t I get her out of my head. Later that evening I went to the club and found Michael at our usual spot. He was just staring at his drinks. “You didn’t tell me you’re paying house calls,” I said before taking the seat opposite him. “What?” “What were you doing at my ex’s house?” “Oh. That was my father. He thinks she’s his.” I raised a brow. “His what?” “His daughter,” Michael said. I was about to flip out but he continued. “From an affair decades ago.” The old man thought Anna was his daughter. “That’s insane,” I said. “I thought Anna’s father was dead. Are you sure about this?” Michael let out a loud chuckle. “No one believes this nonsense. If she’s his daughter, where was she all these years?” In an orphanage, I wanted to say. “He had some investigator dig up records,” Michael continued. “Apparently she was placed in an orphanage. I don’t believe a word of it “ “It’s very strange,” I commented because I wanted him to give more details. “Even if it were true, it changes nothing. That woman cannot be brought into our family. Do you understand what that would do to mother? The press would have a field day and I’m not about to allow that negative publicity affect my next campaign.” “So you’re saying,” I said. “Your father wants to acknowledge her but the rest of you don’t want that.” His silence gave me the answer. “My father is old,” Michael suddenly added. “I hope he tires of his fantasy soon or I’ll have to do things the hard way.” “Huh?” “Yeah. She has to disappear before this gets out of hand.” I knew exactly what Michael meant by making someone disappear. I had never got involved in his affairs but this concerned the mother of my child. “No.” I said firmly, placing my hand on the table. Michael leaned his head to the side and laughed. “Don’t tell me you’re concerned about that little cheat. Never pegged you for a simp, bro.” “It’s not about her. It’s about the little girl, her child. She’s my daughter and I’ll let you hurt the person who takes care of her.” “Or what? What will you do?” I grabbed his hand over the table and twisted it until he groaned in pain. “I’ll do so many things. All I can say is touch her and you’ll regret.” Before he could say anything, I let go and walked away. I had just made a new enemy but I didn’t care. For my daughter, I would do anything.Anna.I spent most of the party watching Emmy and trying to escape the prying eyes of gossipy guests. As Emmy played with some children near a fountain, I conversed with an old woman who seemed to have no idea what was going on at the party. But no matter what I did, my attention kept drifting back to Reid.It was so crazy that the stranger was someone that had been very important to me. I hated how my stomach flipped every time I saw him.Across the lawn, I spotted him speaking with a group of businessmen. Several women glanced in his direction and to be honest I couldn’t blame them. The man was total eye candy. My eyes went low, observing how his trouser fit so well. When I started wondering how he looked down there, I took a gulp of my drink and knew it was time to stop staring.Suddenly the blonde woman from earlier returned to his side, latching herself on his arm like he would escape if she didn’t.Jealousy crept to my chest and I realized it was time to stop fighting it and de
Anna. “Emmy!”I called out as I rushed down the upstairs hallway, throwing open doors without bothering to knock. Now that I needed to find my daughter as soon as possible, the mansion seemed even bigger than I thought.“Emmy!” I called out again as I ran down a staircase and nearly collided with a maid.“Miss Anna!” she gasped.I grabbed her arms and shook them. “Have you seen my daughter?”The young woman shook her head. “No, but I just remembered something. Earlier, I saw someone near the old garden shed.”My heart skipped a beat.“The shed? Where is it?” “It’s at the back of the property but nobody uses it anymore.”I didn’t wait to hear anything else. “Take me there right now. Let’s go!”The maid hurried ahead while I followed as fast as I could. We raced through the gardens, passing by flowerbeds and glorious fountains. The shed stood near a row of tall hedges at the far end of the property. It was old and weathered, and looked out of place in the area. The maid reached the do
Anna. I woke up feeling peaceful, which wasn’t something I was used to. The mattress was very soft and the sheets smelled heavenly. When I stretched my hand and felt my daughter sleeping peacefully, I smiled and opened my eyes. I was scared of what was to come but at the same time feeling so relaxed. I stared at the ceiling as I waited for her to wake up. Emmy was curled up in a foetal position, clutching her tiny stuffed rabbit. I propped myself up with my elbows and reached out to get the brown curls off her face. She stirred but did not wake up. I still couldn’t believe that this could be my home; that this luxurious house could be were I would live after living hand to mouth for as long as I could remember. A knock on the door drew me out of my thoughts. I stared at the brown hard wood door, wondering who was waiting for me on the other side. My heart thumped harder. I was not yet ready to meet those people. “Miss Anna, breakfast is being served downstairs.” “Than
AnnaI didn’t run for long. Since I wasn’t seeing clearly in the dark, I ended up stumbling over a stone on the side of the road. Thankfully, neither I nor Emmy fell. Fear gripped me as the thudding of the men’s boots against the gravel got closer. Suddenly, headlights flashed ahead. In a desperate attempt, I waved my hand wildly, hoping it would stop. The car slowed down and stopped. The men following us cursed before stopping to analyze the situation. The door opened and a man stepped out. My eyes widened when I recognized the tall man with broad shoulders and dark hair. Before I could say anything, one of the drunk men laughed. “Hey, mind your business,” he said to the man, stepping forward. One of his colleagues lunged forward with raised bottle. Reid caught his wrist midair and twisted it, making the man squirm. I heard a crack and winced, before the body hit the ground. Another man swung wildly at Reid but he missed. Reid ducked before driving his shoulders into the man’s che
AnnaMrs. Peller and her daughter were happier than usual. I knew it was probably because they finally had someone to be their little slave. Every morning began the same way. Before the sun was out, Mrs. Peller was either yelling my name or standing in the doorway informing me about all the work that needed to be done. Sometimes she would just slam the cupboards, set plates with a lot of force and slam doors, forcing everyone to wake up.I would wake up and start by scrubbing grimy floors, then cook breakfast before going to do the laundry. The worst thing about it was that Emmy wasn’t allowed to enjoy the nice meals. I didn’t care about the meals, didn’t need them. I just hated how much I struggled, only for my daughter to eat poorly. They treated my daughter like a street rat instead of a child.“Too much sugar is bad,” his sister would say, pulling fruit from Emmy’s tiny hands.“She doesn’t need meat every day,” Mrs. Peller would add, scooping large pieces into her own bowl while E
Reid Walking to Robert’s house gave me feelings I couldn’t describe. This was where my daughter had been living while I went about my life like she did not exist. It was crazy that Anna had literally been in the same city for years but we never ran into each other. As I got closer, I wondered if things would have been different if she had her memories. Would she have returned to beg me from mercy? Thinking about that annoyed me. Why would I forgive a cheater? Anna didn’t cheat because I didn’t give her what she needed. She did it despite me giving her everything. That was the height of ungratefulness. Pushing aside my fury for the sake of my daughter, I raised my hand and knocked. There was no answer so I knocked again. The door finally opened and a pretty woman stepped out. She had long hair, dyed red. Her eyes roamed over me as she pretended to fix the loose top that fell off her shoulder. She smiled, seemingly satisfied with what she was saying. “Well,” she said, leaning ag
Robert.“You’re better than me, man.” Andres said. He was my closest friend so he knew everything about Anna and I. “If that was my wife, I wouldn’t allow her around those sneaky rich bastards.”“I trust Anna. She wouldn’t dare do something to disgrace me.” I said. “Besides we need the money.”“Is
Anna.My head was throbbing when I woke up. Eyes widened when I remembered the familiar white ceiling with light green decorations on the sides. No way, I thought, before quickly sitting up and looking around. The bed creaked as I shifted my weight, realizing I was in Robert’s parent’s house. I gl
Anna.“Fine, we shall stay.” The words came out when I least expected them. I turned and looked at Robert, wondering if I had imagined them.“Did you say?”“Yes. For now. We’ll leave as soon as Emmy fully recovers.”This was the best thing I’d heard in a while. I rushed over and hugged him tight,
