17 - An Invitation

The frustration faded in an instant but it was replaced by an even deeper disappointment.

"But you said you were coming," he muttered into the phone. "Is there really no way? Can't anything be done?"

The girl on the other end spoke a few words to him, words I couldn't hear, but they brought more disappointment to his face. 

"It's alright. I understand."

He hung up the call, his face marked with a sadness I had never seen before. His eyes lifted up and met mine in the front view mirror and it was as if that’s when he suddenly remembered I was in the car too. A shadow of regret came across his face immediately.
