I was rejected by the man I sacrificed everything for. Now, the most feared Alpha in the werewolf world wants me to become his wife. For two years, I believed loving Cole was enough. I supported him when he had nothing, worked from home to help build his company. I thought that once he became successful, he would finally see me. Instead, success made him ashamed of me. When Cole's beautiful first love, Selena, returns, everything changes. He divorces me publicly and humiliates me for being a plus-size, wolfless Omega. Then I discover the cruelest truth of all. The three-year-old daughter I devoted my life to raising wasn't adopted because Cole and I couldn't have children. She was his daughter born from his affair with Selena. With nowhere to go, no money in my account, and my own family refusing to take me back, I find myself applying for a live-in nanny position I never imagined I'd need. My new employer is Alpha Lucian Steel. Powerful. Ruthless. Untouchable. And grieving the mysterious death of his mate. His five-year-old daughter, Mira, is even more terrifying. She has driven away every nanny who has entered the Steel mansion. But when I meet her, something impossible happens. The child who screams whenever anyone touches her reaches for my hand. And Lucian's wolf recognizes my scent. Mate. He knows I'm his fated mate. I don't. Lucian should reject me. Instead, he makes me an offer. A contract marriage with rules. I will become Mira's mother in name, while Lucian protects me from the world that discarded me. It sounds perfect. Until living under the same roof turns our carefully written rules into something neither of us can control. I was once the wife nobody wanted. Now, I'm the Luna everyone will bow to.

Chapter 1

Zara’s POV

The ballroom smelled of champagne and other people's money. I stood beside Cole in a dress I'd altered twice to fit right, smiling at faces I couldn't put names to and nodding at conversations that had nothing to do with me because that's what a supportive wife does.

"You must be so proud of him," a woman in emerald silk said, gripping my arm like we were old friends. "Three years of grinding and now look. He's become the Cole Whitman."

"I am," I said, my smile beaming as I stole a glance at my husband. "I am really proud of him."

The words came out easy, just like they always did.

I watched Cole work the room, laughing at jokes that weren't funny and shaking hands like each one mattered.

He hadn't looked at me like that in months. Not since before the investors came in, before the launch, before his name started showing up in places that mattered.

Tonight, though, he seemed almost warm. Almost like the man I had married.

Maybe this was it. Maybe once the pressure eased, once the company stopped eating every hour of his day, we could find our way back to something. I held onto that thought like it could keep me standing.

Across the room, Mara tugged at the hem of her dress, bored, swinging her legs under a table too big for her.

Cole caught my eye and tipped his head toward the hallway. Just a small motion but I read it right away- “come here.”

I went, because I still believed, back then, that whatever he had to say to me mattered.

The hallway was quieter, just the muffled thump of music through the wall remained. Cole leaned against the railing, one hand in his pocket with that easy confidence he'd worn all night still hanging on him.

"I wanted to talk to you about something," he said. "Before it gets messy in there."

I tilted my head to catch more of his face but it gave nothing away.

"Messy how?" I asked. "Is this about the Hendricks account?"

He almost laughed. "No, Zara. This isn't about the company."

"Okay." I let out the breath I didn't even realise I had held, smoothing my dress with my hands, a habit I couldn't break. "Then what?"

"I'm stepping into a different life now." He said it the way he might describe a new car, a new house. "Different rooms, different people. I need someone who fits that. Someone who can compliment me better."

I nodded slowly, already rearranging his words into something manageable. A publicist, maybe. Someone to handle the press, the optics, the version of him that investors wanted to see.

"Are you thinking of hiring someone for the public side of things?" I asked. "I could help you look, if you want a second opinion."

Cole tilted his head at me, and for the first time all night, something flickered behind his eyes that wasn't warmth.

"Don't be difficult, Zara," he said.

I opened my mouth, ready to ask him what that even meant, ready to make him say the real words instead of hiding behind riddles. But before I could get anything out, a small voice cut through the music behind us.

"Mummy!"

Mara.

My whole body turned toward the ballroom out of instinct, a smile already rising to my face. She did this sometimes, calling out just to see me look at her from across a room, some small game only the two of us understood.

Cole didn't move though.

I stepped back into the ballroom, scanning the crowd for my daughter, expecting to find her running toward me the way she always did.

That floral pattern on her gown appeared in my view. She was running.

The smile on my face slowly became small. Mara was running alright but not towards me.

She was halfway across the room, small legs pumping, arms already stretched out, aimed at a woman I didn't recognize standing near the bar.

The crowd parted for her without meaning to, the way people do for a child moving with purpose.

My stomach dropped before my mind caught up to why. I told myself there had to be another explanation. A friend. A teacher from her daycare, someone new I hadn't met yet.

But nothing about the words she'd shouted felt confused, or hesitant, or new.

Mara reached the woman before I could take a single step.

She wrapped both arms around the woman's legs, burying her face in the fabric of her dress like she'd done it a hundred times before.

The woman knelt down without hesitation, without the awkward pause of a stranger unsure how to hold someone else's child.

She gathered Mara up like the motion was already memorized in her body, brushing hair back from her face, murmuring something I couldn't hear over the blood rushing in my ears.

The room noticed before I fully understood what I was seeing. Conversations dimmed one by one, a ripple of silence spreading outward from the bar until the music felt too loud for how quiet everyone had gone.

I looked at Mara's face, flushed and happy, pressed against a stranger's shoulder.

I looked at the woman's face, achingly familiar in a way I couldn't place yet, soft and sure and unbothered by the eyes now fixed on her.

Then I looked at Cole.

He hadn't moved from the hallway doorway. He wasn't rushing forward to collect our daughter, wasn't offering some flustered explanation to the guests now staring.

He stood there with his hands in his pockets, watching the scene unfold the way a man watches something going exactly according to plan.

That was when I understood- whatever this was, he had known it was coming.

Cole finally moved, crossing the room with the same unhurried confidence he carried into every meeting he'd ever walked into. Not toward me. Toward them.

He stopped beside the woman and rested a hand on her shoulder, easy, familiar, like it had always belonged there.

Someone near me whispered something to their partner, too low for me to catch, but I saw the way their eyes flicked between me and the woman kneeling with my daughter. I saw the pity forming on their faces before I understood what it was for.

"Cole," I said, my voice thinner than I wanted it to be. "What is going on?"

He looked at me then, finally, and his face gave me nothing. No guilt. No apology. Nothing but the calm, settled look of a man closing out a chapter he'd already finished reading.

Mara twisted in the woman's arms, pointing at me, still smiling, still innocent to whatever was unraveling around her.

"Mummy, look," she said. "It's my first mummy”

I felt my arm drop. First mummy?

Cole straightened, lifting his voice so it carried past me, past Mara, out to every guest still frozen mid-conversation.

"Everyone," he said. "I think it's time you all finally met Mara's real mother.”
