Chapter 1

Damian Pierce called me almost immediately.

“Why did you remove your comment?”

I replied in a soft voice, “Must’ve been an accident.”

He did not question it; he simply hummed.

“There’s some whole-wheat bread left in the fridge from yesterday. Remember to eat it. I have plans tonight, so I won’t be coming home.”

“Damian, it’s my birthday.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

“Didn’t I already post about it?”

“Is that counted as a gift?”

“We agreed not to overspend, didn’t we? Posting a picture is still a way of commemorating it. Don’t let all that stuff you see online get into your head.”

His voice was gentle, almost patient, as though he was correcting a child who did not know any better.

“If you’d like to have some cake, just order one yourself. Use the household account. Don’t get anything too big. It’ll just be a waste.”

I stared at the six-tiered cake on Sienna’s private account. Damian was standing behind her, lighting the candles. At the bottom corner of the photo, I could see half of a man’s wrist. The watch on it was the one I had given him three years ago.

He had not refused it back then. Instead, he transferred the exact same amount to me and said, “That way, it doesn’t count as a gift from you. Neither of us owes the other anything.”

Later, I put the money into our household account. He had continued to wear that watch all along.

“Where are you going tonight?” I asked.

“Out with some friends.”

“Which friends?”

His tone turned slightly cold. “You never used to check up on me.”

“Is Sienna there too?”

This time, the silence lasted much longer.

“She just got dumped. She’s not doing well, so a few of us are keeping her company.”

“In a presidential suite?”

“Elena Carter.” He called me by my full name. “You went through her private account?”

That was what bothered him. It was not what I had discovered but how I had discovered it. I tightened my grip around my phone.

“She receives gifts every year on my birthday and our wedding anniversary. You’re telling me that’s a coincidence?”

“She likes documenting her life. Stop assuming everything is about you.”

“Then who gave her those gifts?”

“Does it matter?” Damian heaved a sigh. “You’re already my wife. Why are you still getting jealous of someone who's just been dumped?”

I let out a quiet laugh. “So she needs handbags, jewelry, roses, and a presidential suite, and I only need a social media post?”

“Elena, marriage isn’t a competition.”

“Then come home. We’ll talk about it face-to-face.”

A knock sounded from his end of the line, then I heard Sienna’s bright voice. “Damian, the candles are about to go out.”

Damian lowered his voice. “I’ll explain later.”

The call ended.

Half an hour later, the doorbell rang. I thought it was him, but when I opened the door, a delivery man was standing outside. “Ms. Carter, Mr. Pierce ordered a birthday gift for you. Please sign here.”

Inside the paper bag was a box of oatmeal that was about to expire. The order note read: [She’s been having trouble sleeping lately. Don’t send her anything sweet. Get her something practical.]

I picked up the receipt. It cost 19 dollars 90 cents, and after the discount, it was 11 dollars 90 cents.

At that exact moment, a new post from Sienna popped up on my phone. She was wearing a diamond necklace and leaning against Damian’s shoulder.

[He once said roses don’t last more than seven days, so he gave me something that will never fade.]

I stared at the photo for a few seconds, then I liked it.

Sienna messaged me almost immediately: [Elena, don’t misunderstand. The necklace was a gift from everyone.]

I replied: [I never asked who gave it to you.]

The typing indicator appeared and stayed there for a long time. In the end, she sent nothing.

At 2:00 am, Damian finally came home. He took off his coat and glanced at the box of oatmeal on the table. His expression softened slightly. “You got it?”

“I got it.”

“Don’t complain that it’s simple. The best gift is something that suits you.”

With that, he walked into the bathroom.

I picked up his coat to hang it up. A folded receipt slipped from his pocket and landed on the floor.

‘Presidential Suite — $38,000, Decoration Service — $96,000, Custom Jewelry — $680,000’

At the very bottom was a handwritten note: [Per Mr. Pierce’s instructions, the roses must be Ms. Moore’s favorite variety.]

The sound of running water stopped. Damian opened the bathroom door. The moment he saw the receipt in my hand, he froze.

On my first birthday after the divorce, I ordered a small cake. There was no party, no room filled with roses. A few friends took me out for dinner. Some brought expensive gifts while others brought simple ones. Someone gave me perfume. Someone brought a book. Someone else showed up with a bouquet of white lisianthus.I accepted them all. Liking something did not make me vain. Having expectations was not a mistake, either. The real mistake was being told to restrain yourself while someone else was given all the passion you had been asked to suppress.Damian sent me a message that day: [Happy birthday.]I read it, then deleted it. Later, I heard from a mutual friend that he had sold the house. When the buyer came to see it, the only thing left in the living room was our wedding photograph. The realtor asked if he wanted it cleared out with the rest.He stood there for a long time before saying, “Leave it.”However, on the day the house was sold, the photograph still ended up

When the court granted the divorce, Damian said nothing. The clerk asked him to sign the papers. He put the tip of the pen down, but for a long moment, he could not bring himself to sign his name.“Mr. Pierce?”He lifted his head and looked at me. “Can we really not talk about this one more time?”“No.”“I’ll give you the house. The savings too.”“Just divide everything according to the judgment.”“I can give you back everything. All of it.”“Damian, I never wanted any of those things.”His eyes slowly reddened. “Then what did you want?”I looked at him. “Four years ago, I wanted a wedding. Three years ago, I wanted a bouquet of flowers. Two years ago, I wanted you to sit down and have a meal with me. One year ago, all I wanted was for you to remember our anniversary. After that, I stopped wanting anything.”His hand holding the pen began to tremble. “Why didn’t you tell me one more time?”“I told you so many times. Every time, you were the one who told me that real love di

After my lawyer submitted the complete conversation, Sienna deleted the post. A moment later, she called me. “Elena, let’s settle this between ourselves.”“How?”“I’ll return some of the things. You drop the lawsuit.""You need to return all of them.”“Some have already been sold.”“Then reimburse me at their current value.”Her breathing grew heavier. “Do you really have to destroy me completely?”“Sienna, four years ago, when you convinced me to accept Damian’s minimalist lifestyle, you already knew he was buying you gifts, didn’t you?”She remained silent. I continued, “Every time I had doubts, you helped him explain them away. You told me that a man who didn’t give gifts was a man who was sincere. And then you turned around and used your private account to show off every single thing he gave you. You didn’t love the gifts. You loved taking them from me.”Sienna suddenly laughed. “So what? You have the title of his wife. Am I not allowed a little compensation? Damian lo

Sienna showed up for the first mediation hearing too. She had taken off all her jewelry and carried nothing but a canvas tote. The moment she saw me, her eyes turned red. “Elena, we’ve been friends for so many years. Do you really want to leave me with nothing?”I placed the property list on the table. “None of it was yours to begin with.”“But Damian gave it all to me.”“Then let him buy it all again with his own money.”Damian sat across from me, his eyes fixed on me the entire time. The mediator asked, “Mr. Pierce, do you agree to the divorce?”“No.”“Is it true that you gave these assets to Ms. Moore?”He paused for several seconds. “Yes, but Elena knew about it.”I lifted my eyes to him.Damian continued, “She knew Sienna and I were close. She never objected all these years.”I gave a small laugh. “I only found out the actual amount yesterday.”“You saw her posts.”“Sienna blocked me from seeing them.”The mediator turned to Sienna. The color drained from her face.

Damian did not linger in the hallway. He went to deal with the seizure of Sienna’s belongings. At 11:00 pm, he came back and knocked on my door. “Elena, we need to talk.”I did not open the door. “Your lawyer can talk to mine.”“I’m not agreeing to a divorce.”“Then we’ll settle it in court.”There was a long silence on the other side before he said quietly, “Sienna and I never slept together.”My hand tightened around the cup for a moment. “So?”“I admit I handled the gifts badly, but I never betrayed our marriage.”“So you’re saying that as long as you never slept with her, four years of lies don’t count as betrayal?”“I owe her.”“What do you owe her?”Damian was silent for a moment. “When I was at my lowest, she was there for me.”“So was I.”In our first year of marriage, he suffered from insomnia and stayed awake all night. I sat with him until dawn. The second year, he was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer. I stayed by his side for seven days. The third year, he

The moment I finished speaking, the door behind me flew open. Damian came after me and grabbed my phone. “Who are you suing?” His eyes were locked on the screen, his expression darkening.I pulled my phone back. “Sienna Moore. Everything she received was bought with marital assets.”Sienna came rushing out after him, the smile on her face completely gone. “Elena, Damian gave me those things willingly.”“His consent doesn’t give him the right to dispose of my half of our marital property.”Damian stepped between us. “How much do you want? I’ll transfer it to you. Just leave Sienna out of this.”I looked at him. “Even now, you’re still protecting her.”“I’m trying to solve the problem.”“Your idea of solving the problem is making me be the understanding one again?”His voice grew heavier. “Do you really have to drag this into court and make everyone look bad?”“The one who should be embarrassed isn’t me.”I brushed his hand away from my phone. “Someone will be contacting you
