Chapter 2

Author: Greencloud
“Who gave you permission to go through my pockets?” Damian snatched the receipt from my hand. The movement was not rough, but his voice had turned cold.

“It fell out on its own.”

“You should’ve put it back.”

He folded the receipt neatly and slipped it into his wallet.

I asked, “If the necklace was a gift from everyone, why was it charged to your account?”

“I paid for it upfront.”

“That's 680,000. Will the others pay you back?”

“Friends don’t need to keep such careful accounts.”

I glanced at the box of oatmeal on the table that cost 11 dollars and 90 cents. “But we do?”

Damian followed my gaze and frowned. “What do you actually want?”

“A bouquet of flowers.”

He looked at me as though he had not heard me correctly. “What?”

“Four years together, and all I want is one bouquet of flowers from you.”

He fell silent for a moment, then he pulled 500 dollars from his wallet and placed it on the table. “If you want flowers that badly, buy them yourself.”

The bills landed beside the oatmeal. It was like charity, like settling a debt.

“I want you to give them to me.”

“Does it really matter who buys the flowers?”

“Then how do you know which kind Sienna likes?”

Damian’s expression hardened. “She mentioned it once. I happened to remember.”

“I told you too.”

“What did you say?”

The last bit of warmth in my chest suddenly went out.

The first year we were married, I passed a flower shop and mentioned that I liked white lisianthus. The second year, he asked what I wanted. I gave him the same answer—lisianthus.

He told me flowers were overpriced and said we might as well buy two bunches of vegetables instead. After that, I never mentioned flowers again.

I pushed the 500 dollars back toward him. “Forget it.”

The tension in Damian’s expression eased, and I could almost see the breath he had been holding finally leave him. “That’s more like it. Don’t let some pointless ritual ruin what we have.”

…

The next afternoon, Sienna invited me over to her place.

The moment she opened the door, I saw unopened gift boxes scattered throughout the apartment.

She was wearing a diamond necklace. She smiled as she wrapped her arms around me. “I didn’t spend your birthday with you yesterday. You’re not mad at me, are you?”

I did not pull away. “No.”

“Damian always says you’re so understanding.” She led me into her dressing room and pointed toward a row of limited-edition handbags. “I’ve been decluttering lately. Help me pick out a few I don’t want anymore. I’m going to list them online.”

I stared at the bags. Among them was a green handbag I had once lingered over in a magazine.

Back then, Damian had taken the magazine away from me. “That color will go out of style too quickly. It’s not worth buying.”

Now, it sat inside Sienna’s glass display cabinet. The protective film had not even been removed.

I asked, “Was this one from your ex too?”

Sienna ran her fingers lightly over the bag’s clasp and put on a faint smile. “The person who gave it to me doesn’t matter. What matters is that someone remembers what I like.”

The sound of a key turning in the lock came from the front door. Damian walked in carrying two cups of coffee.

The moment he saw me, his expression changed. “Why are you here?”

Sienna took the coffee from him and answered for him, “I invited Elena over. You don’t mind that Damian has a key to my place, do you?”

Damian handed the other cup to me. “Sienna always forgets her keys. I keep a spare for her. That’s all.”

I lowered my eyes to the cups. Sienna’s was a hot latte with hazelnut syrup. Mine was an iced long black.

“I can’t drink iced coffee.”

His brows twitched. “You used to.”

“My stomach can’t handle it. I haven’t had anything iced since we got together.”

Damian froze for a moment. Sienna immediately took the iced long black from my hand. “It’s fine. I can drink it too. Damian has so many things to remember every day. It’s normal for him to get something wrong once in a while.”

In one hand, she held the hot latte Damian had remembered exactly how to order. In the other, the iced coffee he had gotten wrong for me.

Damian glanced at me. “It’s just a cup of coffee. Don’t make everyone uncomfortable.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

As I was leaving, I spotted a pair of men’s slippers beside the shoe cabinet. They were identical to the pair Damian wore at home.

Sienna noticed where I was looking and deliberately put on a smile. “He comes by sometimes to help me fix things. It’s just more convenient to keep a pair here.”

Damian said nothing.

I stepped into the elevator. As the doors slowly began to close, Sienna suddenly slipped her arm through Damian’s. “Damian, don’t forget that we’re picking out my ring tonight.”

Damian’s expression changed instantly, and his eyes instinctively found mine. For one brief moment, our eyes met. Then the elevator doors closed completely.

On my first birthday after the divorce, I ordered a small cake. There was no party, no room filled with roses. A few friends took me out for dinner. Some brought expensive gifts while others brought simple ones. Someone gave me perfume. Someone brought a book. Someone else showed up with a bouquet of white lisianthus.I accepted them all. Liking something did not make me vain. Having expectations was not a mistake, either. The real mistake was being told to restrain yourself while someone else was given all the passion you had been asked to suppress.Damian sent me a message that day: [Happy birthday.]I read it, then deleted it. Later, I heard from a mutual friend that he had sold the house. When the buyer came to see it, the only thing left in the living room was our wedding photograph. The realtor asked if he wanted it cleared out with the rest.He stood there for a long time before saying, “Leave it.”However, on the day the house was sold, the photograph still ended up

When the court granted the divorce, Damian said nothing. The clerk asked him to sign the papers. He put the tip of the pen down, but for a long moment, he could not bring himself to sign his name.“Mr. Pierce?”He lifted his head and looked at me. “Can we really not talk about this one more time?”“No.”“I’ll give you the house. The savings too.”“Just divide everything according to the judgment.”“I can give you back everything. All of it.”“Damian, I never wanted any of those things.”His eyes slowly reddened. “Then what did you want?”I looked at him. “Four years ago, I wanted a wedding. Three years ago, I wanted a bouquet of flowers. Two years ago, I wanted you to sit down and have a meal with me. One year ago, all I wanted was for you to remember our anniversary. After that, I stopped wanting anything.”His hand holding the pen began to tremble. “Why didn’t you tell me one more time?”“I told you so many times. Every time, you were the one who told me that real love di

After my lawyer submitted the complete conversation, Sienna deleted the post. A moment later, she called me. “Elena, let’s settle this between ourselves.”“How?”“I’ll return some of the things. You drop the lawsuit.""You need to return all of them.”“Some have already been sold.”“Then reimburse me at their current value.”Her breathing grew heavier. “Do you really have to destroy me completely?”“Sienna, four years ago, when you convinced me to accept Damian’s minimalist lifestyle, you already knew he was buying you gifts, didn’t you?”She remained silent. I continued, “Every time I had doubts, you helped him explain them away. You told me that a man who didn’t give gifts was a man who was sincere. And then you turned around and used your private account to show off every single thing he gave you. You didn’t love the gifts. You loved taking them from me.”Sienna suddenly laughed. “So what? You have the title of his wife. Am I not allowed a little compensation? Damian lo

Sienna showed up for the first mediation hearing too. She had taken off all her jewelry and carried nothing but a canvas tote. The moment she saw me, her eyes turned red. “Elena, we’ve been friends for so many years. Do you really want to leave me with nothing?”I placed the property list on the table. “None of it was yours to begin with.”“But Damian gave it all to me.”“Then let him buy it all again with his own money.”Damian sat across from me, his eyes fixed on me the entire time. The mediator asked, “Mr. Pierce, do you agree to the divorce?”“No.”“Is it true that you gave these assets to Ms. Moore?”He paused for several seconds. “Yes, but Elena knew about it.”I lifted my eyes to him.Damian continued, “She knew Sienna and I were close. She never objected all these years.”I gave a small laugh. “I only found out the actual amount yesterday.”“You saw her posts.”“Sienna blocked me from seeing them.”The mediator turned to Sienna. The color drained from her face.

Damian did not linger in the hallway. He went to deal with the seizure of Sienna’s belongings. At 11:00 pm, he came back and knocked on my door. “Elena, we need to talk.”I did not open the door. “Your lawyer can talk to mine.”“I’m not agreeing to a divorce.”“Then we’ll settle it in court.”There was a long silence on the other side before he said quietly, “Sienna and I never slept together.”My hand tightened around the cup for a moment. “So?”“I admit I handled the gifts badly, but I never betrayed our marriage.”“So you’re saying that as long as you never slept with her, four years of lies don’t count as betrayal?”“I owe her.”“What do you owe her?”Damian was silent for a moment. “When I was at my lowest, she was there for me.”“So was I.”In our first year of marriage, he suffered from insomnia and stayed awake all night. I sat with him until dawn. The second year, he was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer. I stayed by his side for seven days. The third year, he

The moment I finished speaking, the door behind me flew open. Damian came after me and grabbed my phone. “Who are you suing?” His eyes were locked on the screen, his expression darkening.I pulled my phone back. “Sienna Moore. Everything she received was bought with marital assets.”Sienna came rushing out after him, the smile on her face completely gone. “Elena, Damian gave me those things willingly.”“His consent doesn’t give him the right to dispose of my half of our marital property.”Damian stepped between us. “How much do you want? I’ll transfer it to you. Just leave Sienna out of this.”I looked at him. “Even now, you’re still protecting her.”“I’m trying to solve the problem.”“Your idea of solving the problem is making me be the understanding one again?”His voice grew heavier. “Do you really have to drag this into court and make everyone look bad?”“The one who should be embarrassed isn’t me.”I brushed his hand away from my phone. “Someone will be contacting you
