Draven POV

I looked at the phone for a long moment… then I answered.

She didn't speak. Just breathed. Slow and deliberate. As though she was composing herself before she said anything.

She breathed the same way that night in the woods when she told me it was over. And on that morning in the Beta's garden when she told me she was fine even though her cheek was purple.

I waited for her to speak.

"Draven." Her voice was careful. "I need you to know that nothing-"

"George is a safe choice." The wo

Draven POVAlpha Cullen's pack doctor was making a visible effort not to stare at the boy sitting at the dining table.Aiden had washed up and was dressed in a neat sweatshirt and chinos that Cullen's Beta had found for him. He was now drinking a cup of hot chocolate that had a drop of something else inside it. Something that would erase every form of masking herbs from his bloodstream. .His dirty clothes and the sample taken from them were already in the pack laboratory."He looks perfectly healthy, Alpha Darkwood," Dr. Fields reported gently. "He also seem... perfectly cloaked."My gaze returned to him. He seemed to understand that I wanted further explanation."There's only one substance in the Realm that can hide a wolf's entire blueprint like this," he supplied."Masking potion." The words left my mouth before I realized I'd spoken out loud. The doctor nodded.A memory came rushing through me. Of the smuggler Simon had caught. The same male I'd tortured not long ago, trying to

Layla POV"H-how are you?" I asked my son. "What happened?"Aiden immediately launched into the story of how he ended up in the woods. He told me how he'd run and hid the way I'd taught him whenever there was trouble. He told me about the commotion at his school, the security guards trying to hold the attackers back, and how he'd kept moving whenever it sounded like they were getting closer. He'd seen the beast people fighting each other. Some had won. The bigger ones. He'd made sure he hid far from them. The idea that my son had witnessed a fierce battle and bloodshed did not bother me. Yet. I didn't let it.Then he got to the part where Alpha Draven had found him.The more he talked, the steadier my breathing became. He truly was unharmed. That was all that mattered. He even sounded excited."Mom, we're in a very big house now."My grip tightened around the edge of the table. Arctic Moon?"Where… What... big house?" I forced my voice to stay calm. "Did you tell Alpha Darkwood to br

Layla POV It took another two hours to learn that the mayhem was a result of an attack that spilled over from the neighboring borders. It took an extra five minutes to quickly learn that both territories were tied to the Arctic Moon. Warriors from the pack were all over neutral territory now. Alpha Draven was most certainly out there, restoring order to his borders. If I'd paid any attention to pack politics and business when I was still a member, I might have known about all the lands and settlements connected to my former pack.Maybe then I wouldn't be in this mess right now. Because I wouldn't have ended up anywhere close to a territory that belongs to the Arctic Moon.I wouldn't be thinking about any of this right now if Aiden was in my arms.My son was out there too among other school children. When I left my office earlier to find people running for cover, I'd rushed into the chaos without thinking. My one desperate thought had been to get to his school. But I'd barely made

Draven POVI'm six. Not five. The words reverberated in the forest. Or maybe inside my head. My whole body locked.I stopped walking. "What did you say?"The boy frowned up at me, confused by my reaction."I said... I'm six years old." He held up six fingers. "I blew six candles on my last birthday. So I'm past five now.""When was it? I mean your last birthday?""July twenty-eighth."My mind went still. That date was about eight months ago.Not a few days or even weeks ago.Layla had deliberately lied. And I hadn't even asked. She'd volunteered the boy's age on her own.The boy continued talking while my mind got busy doing the math."Duncan was at my party too. At the amusement park near my mom's hospital. I didn't want him there, but Mom said my friends from school had to come. He's not my friend. He's mean. Mom thinks we can be friends if we try. She also said I must never go into the woods because the beast people come out here, and they could get me. Mr. Clyde is one of the

Draven POV"Do you need anything... special?" Nash asked carefully. We were making our way back through the woods after inspecting one of our borders.I didn't answer immediately. We'd been racing and walking in silence. And I liked it that way. At this moment, there were no reports, no council members, no family or pack waiting for a mating ceremony I hadn't thought about since the day I'd announced my engagement."Anything special for what?" I asked eventually."Your mating ceremony."I glanced at him.Three days had passed since I went public with the betrothal. If my mother and sister hadn't spent the last two days organizing everything and Carla hadn't started appearing at the house with increasing frequency, I might have forgotten about it altogether.I said nothing. My Beta didn't press. We kept walking until we reached the pack grounds. Then I headed straight to my chambers without stopping to greet anyone. My parents were waiting. So was my sister.I avoided all of them.I

Layla POVTwo days passed after I saw Draven at the hospital's parking lot. Then I woke up to get start the day, and relief was the first thing I felt. The familiar anxiety that always came with dawn ever since Draven showed up again was still there. But it was faint. Not that there was something special waiting for me. But because there was not a single Arctic Moon pack member nearby. No wounded miner. No warriors lurking. Aiden was no longer in the same small square mile as his father.Apart from all that, one thought that comforted me the most. Travis had texted me the night before.‘Your order has finally been released. It'll be here at dawn.’Why he'd felt the need to text me personally and quite late in the night, I didn't know. Maybe he felt guilty for forcing me into Stanley's consultation.Whatever the reason, those few words had lifted a heavy weight off my chest. Before this morning went by, I would have another two months' supply of the masking potion. There would be no m
