Verena did not wait for anyone before starting back toward the cabin. She turned away from the hidden entrance in the mountain, stepped through the shallow snow covering the ravine, and followed the path they had taken earlier as though she had always known where Elias lived. Celeste watched her for several seconds before falling into step behind her.The others followed without discussion. For the first part of the journey, no one spoke much. The discovery inside the sanctuary seemed to have quieted even Leo, though Celeste suspected his silence had less to do with the ancient platform and more to do with the white wolf walking several yards ahead of him after openly rejecting his attempt at a reunion.Verena moved confidently through the trees. Every so often she disappeared behind one of the larger stone formations or passed beneath the heavy branches of an old pine, but Celeste never felt the brief tension she had experienced when the wolf vani

Something answered inside the silence where Verena had once existed.Celeste’s hand remained suspended only inches from the wolf’s muzzle while she tried to understand what she had felt. It had not been a voice, and nothing in her mind had suddenly opened. No memories rushed back to fill the empty places everyone had spent months describing to her. There was only a faint pressure at the edge of her thoughts, unmistakably separate from herself, and the white wolf had gone completely still at the exact same moment.Celeste moved her hand forward until her fingertips disappeared into thick white fur. Verena closed her eyes and leaned into the touch. The sensation that reached Celeste was stronger this time. Relief moved through her so sharply that her breath caught, carrying enough weight that she knew immediately it was not her own. There was grief beneath it too, quieter and older, but Celeste did not try to sort through every piece of what passed between them. The important part was t

Celeste stopped breathing.Across the chamber, carved into a wall that curved beyond the reach of Elias’s lantern, stood the figure of a woman beneath a full moon. Time had softened most of her features, leaving only the shape of a face framed by long hair and the faint outline of robes falling around her body, but the animal beside her had survived with far greater clarity.A wolf stood at her side.Pale stone had been worked into the darker wall to form its body, giving the illusion of white fur beneath the lantern light. Its head was raised toward the moon, its shoulders broad and still, and one forepaw rested slightly ahead of the other as though the carver had captured it at the moment before it stepped forward.Celeste stared at it until Silas moved quietly into the chamber beside her.He said nothing. He did not need to.She knew what he was thinking because the same thought had already lodged itself somewhere beneath her

Chapter 26“We found something.”The words had barely left Celeste before Elias appeared behind Leo in the doorway, one hand still holding the old book Cedric had been looking through with him. Whatever irritation he might have felt at being dragged away from his records disappeared the moment he saw Celeste and Silas standing in the clearing. His attention moved between them once, taking in the snow clinging to their boots and the distance they had clearly traveled despite claiming they were only going for a short walk.Cedric followed him outside a moment later. “What happened?”Silas glanced toward Celeste rather than answering for her.She appreciated that more than she expected.“We followed the tracks from the wolf,” Celeste said. The reaction was immediate.Victoria’s expression changed first, her gaze shifting sharply toward Celeste. Calix straightened beside her while Cedric looked between Celeste and Silas as though waiting for one of them to explain what wolf she was talkin

The howl faded slowly into the mountains. For several seconds, neither Celeste nor Silas moved. The sound had traveled through the walls of Elias’s cabin clearly enough that there was no possibility of mistaking it for wind, shifting ice, or one of the countless unfamiliar noises the mountains made after dark. Silas remained sitting on his blankets near the door, his attention fixed on the frosted window while Celeste stood beside the bed with one hand resting against the blanket she had been about to pull back. She looked at him first.“You heard it.”Silas turned his head toward her. “Yes.”There was something strangely relieving about the answer. Celeste had never truly believed she imagined the wolf, but until now every sighting belonged only to her. The white shape on the ridge, the brief glimpse through the trees, the animal waiting beyond the wards tonight. Each encounter had been easy enough to question once it

The bookshelf had barely settled back into place when Silas rose from his chair. He did not cross the room or immediately start asking questions, but Celeste noticed the way his attention moved over her from head to toe, checking for injuries she had already told him she would not hide. Cedric had turned from the window at the sound of the passage closing, while Leo and Victoria abandoned whatever quiet argument they had been having near the table. Calix remained beside them, one hand resting against the back of Victoria’s chair, and the medic looked up from the small collection of supplies she had been reorganizing beside the fire.Elias walked past everyone as though they had not spent the last hour waiting for him to return with the woman they had crossed several mountains to save. He set the lamp beside the hearth, removed his outer layer, and hung it from one of the wooden pegs near the fireplace.Silas waited until Celeste had fully entered the room before asking, “Are you alrig

Celeste barely slept.Every time she drifted close to sleep, the whisper found its way back to her, quiet enough that she almost convinced herself she had imagined it the first time.Don’t go.Sometimes it sounded distant, soft enough to blend with the wind moving outside the balcony doors. The world outside was waking up, but inside the room, everything still felt suspended, like time had decided to slow down and sit still for a while.Celeste hadn’t moved. She lay exactly where they had left her, blankets pulled up around her, dark hair spread across the pillow in a

The room had settled into a controlled quiet, the kind that did not come naturally but was instead held in place by careful restraint, as though every person inside understood that even the smallest disruption might undo whatever fragile balance Celeste’s body had finally reached. The faint scent of

The Moonwell sat there, still and quiet, the surface of the water undisturbed, reflecting the faint light that filtered in from above in a soft, silver glow. There was no visible source, no stream feeding into it, no movement to suggest where it came from or where it went.It simply existed.Unchang
