Chapter 2

Author: Proud Onion
At work, my desk was also piled high with these things. There was a sandalwood diffuser. Activated charcoal packets. A humidifier. Solid air fresheners. Peppermint essential oils. Even deodorizing spray.

I bought everything I could, and my desk soon became the most fragrant desk in the entire office. Anyone walking by would probably choke on how potent the scents were.

But it was still useless.

My colleagues would still instinctively fan their noses when walking by, and people would still try to avoid me in elevators.

I was driven into a corner. I had no choice but to wake up at 6:30 am every day so that I could reach the office by 7:20 am, a good hour and a half before any of my colleagues usually trickled in.

The first time I did this, I bumped into the cleaning lady, Mrs. Howell, who was mopping the floors. She was stunned when she saw me.

"You're early, miss," she said.

I forced a smile at her and headed for my desk with a bottle of disinfectant. Then, I disinfected my entire tabletop, my keyboard, my mouse, and my chair. I even cleaned the grout in between the tiles with an old toothbrush three times.

Mrs. Howell handed me a dry rag. She didn't pry and just helped me clean everything up.

There was a large pink eight-foot teddy bear placed toward the left side of my desk. I thought that it had always been there since the first day I came to work, but the admin manager, Nathan Bullock, told me that it was a prop from a previous company event. It was registered as an "asset" in the company, so we couldn't just dispose of it.

I used to think that it was really cute back then. When I felt stressed at work, I would even reach over and pat it on the head a few times to destress.

But then, I later learned that the teddy bear hadn't been placed there all along. Someone had deliberately placed it next to me.

That morning, I finally couldn't hold back my curiosity and tugged on Mrs. Howell's sleeve.

"Mrs. Howell, can you lend me your nose for a bit? Do you think something stinks here?"

She came closer to me and sniffed around seriously. Then, her expression changed.

My heart dropped to my stomach.

"Mrs. Howell?"

She didn't answer my question. Instead, she just pointed at the deodorizer on my desk and said, "Miss, it's no use no matter how much you spray this."

I was stunned. "Why not?"

Her lips parted, but she didn't say anything.

I found out later that she'd accidentally bumped into the teddy bear while cleaning the place last month, and my manager, Joel Winters, had told her off angrily in front of the entire office for ten minutes. From then on, she never dared to touch that teddy bear again.

After Mrs. Howell was done cleaning up and was just about to push her cart away, she suddenly stopped and looked at me like she was hesitating about telling me something.

"Miss, if there's a chance for you to switch your desk, you'd better do so, and hurry."

I froze, still clutching the wet rag. The cold water from it ran down my arm and dripped from my elbow to the floor, creating a splotch on the tiles.

When I looked up again, I saw someone standing in the corner of the hallway.

It was Joel.

I didn't know how long he'd been standing there and listening to my conversation with Mrs. Howell. But the moment he realized that I had noticed him, he turned on his heels and left quickly, like he had something to hide.

That weekend, I went to three different departments at the hospital.

I went to the dermatology department. The doctor checked me over and over and told me that there was nothing wrong with my skin, and I didn't have any body odor either.

I then went to the endocrinology department. I had three vials of blood drawn, but all of my indicators were normal.

I then went to the dentistry and gastroenterology department, and after the doctor checked me thoroughly, he wrote down a single line in the medical report.

I picked it up and read it.

"Mental health consultation recommended. Suspected anxiety related to the olfactory system."

I sat on the long bench in the hospital hallway, staring intently at the line of words on my report. My tears fell onto the paper and blurred the black ink.

Next to me, the patient was laughing while playing with his kid. Yet, here I was, clutching a medical report as my falling tears continued dripping onto the paper.

At that point, I began getting suspicious of myself.

Had I really gone crazy? Did the smell really not exist after all?

But I couldn't possibly hallucinate my colleagues' aversion toward me, could I?

After getting home that night, I threw all of the clothes I'd worn into the washing machine. Once they were washed and dried, I brought each clothing item to my nose and sniffed them hard.

They were all clean.

Even my bag, mask, and shoes were clean. The tote bag I'd had for three years also smelled clean and fresh. I sniffed each item again and again and could only determine that they smelled of nothing but detergent.

The smell wasn't coming from me either.

The moment I thought of that, I felt a chill run down my spine. I also remembered the hesitant look in Mrs. Howell's eyes the other day.

Maxine's and Stacey's murder cases were solved, one after another.Joel was suspected of intentional homicide and desecration of a corpse, so he was officially detained as he awaited his trial.Meanwhile, Ricky was also suspected of intentional homicide, but his case would be handled separately. Maxine's parents rushed to the city from their hometown. The two elderly people stood at the entrance of the police station and wept uncontrollably. Her mother held my hand and said, "Thank you. Thank you for letting us bring our daughter home with us."I held her hand in return and didn't know what to say.Later on, Stacey's parents also arrived at the station. Her mother was in very bad shape and needed someone to hold her up the entire time. Her father, on the other hand, had gray hair all over his head as he stood in the corner, smoking cigarette after cigarette. However, there was one more Jane Doe who hadn't been identified yet. She wasn't Maxine nor was she Stacey. The police sti

"Those two bags of remains were already inside the teddy bear before I did anything!" Joel exclaimed.I didn't look at him again and just turned to walk out. Officer Quinn was waiting for me outside."What did he say?" she asked. I repeated everything Joel told me. She fell silent for a bit after that."Gail is the key to this mystery," she said. "She used to be in charge of the old storeroom. If the teddy bear was already tampered with while it was still in the old building, she might actually know something about it."Soon, the police retrieved missing persons records from four to five years ago. There were a total of three matches for the descriptions they put in, which were young women in their early 20s who'd gone missing in this city. The first photo was of Kathleen Newell. She was a 20-year-old college student who went missing five years ago.The second photo was of Stacey Andrews. She was a 21-year-old beautician who went missing four and a half years ago.The third ph

The teddy bear had moved along with us from the old building to the new, from the old warehouse to the new office, and finally, next to my work desk. That afternoon, Officer Sloan accompanied me to the old office building. It was now an apartment building, and the property manager was a man in his 50s.After checking Officer Sloan's credentials, he brought out an old ledger and said, "I remember Starshade Creatives. Before they moved out, they were frequently in arrears on property fees for over a year."Officer Sloan asked, "How was it settled afterward?""They suddenly settled in one lump sum," the man said."Who paid?"The manager flipped through his ledger again. "A person named Gail Pattinson. She said she was the office admin manager."It was raining when we walked out of the property management office. I stood on the ground floor and looked up at the seventh floor. The windows were all tightly shut. There were at least ten different families living there now, but none o

Also, nobody knew just how many victims this teddy bear had claimed. It was dark by the time I walked out of the police station. My phone buzzed a couple of times. They were all from my colleagues.Dave asked, "Amelia? I heard that you were the one who called the police. Was there really something inside the teddy bear?"The intern, Heather Cross, asked, "Are you okay, Amelia? That was frightening as hell!"Lola wrote, "Amelia, the company will be closed tomorrow. Rest well."I never replied to a single message. Instead, I called for an Uber to send me home.We passed by the office building on the way, and I asked the Uber driver to pause there for a second. The whole building was dark except for the 14th floor, which was where our office was located. The police were still there.I stared at the window and thought about Maxine. She had died at work, strangled to death by her own boyfriend before being dismembered and stuffed inside an innocent-looking pink teddy bear. Then, the

"If I come clean, will I be able to get a lighter sentence?" Joel asked.Officer Quinn didn't answer his question. She simply said, "Start talking first."There was a long bout of silence. The silence lasted for so long that I thought they had left the room. Then, Joel's voice was heard."Maxine… I was the one who killed her."I sat on the bench in the hallway and felt as though my soul had just left my body.Joel's voice continued trickling through the door."We dated for a little over half a year. She wanted to break up with me, but I refused. There was nobody at the office that day, and we got into a heated argument at her desk. I then acted impulsively and accidentally strangled her to death."When I finally came back to my senses, she was already dead.""Then, what happened after that?" Officer Quinn asked."I dealt with her body. Stuffed her into a plastic bag and hid her inside the teddy bear.""Why did you pick the teddy bear?""Because it was big enough, and everyo

Officer Quinn opened the folder."Maxine Thayer, female, 28 years old. She joined Starshade Creatives three years ago and worked in the graphic design department."She went missing a year ago. Her parents live in another city and reported her missing, but there have been no leads so far."I asked, "Did she have a boyfriend?"Officer Quinn hesitated for a while. "Yes, she did. And his name is Joel Winters."I was stunned. "My manager? Joel Winters?""Yes," Officer Quinn replied. "They dated for a little over six months. They'd just broken up when Maxine went missing."I felt a chill down my spine."Did Joel call the police?""No. He told others that Maxine left the city after breaking up with him." Officer Quinn took a sip of water. "But it seems more likely that Maxine never went anywhere in the first place. She'd been at your office the whole time, waiting inside that teddy bear."My palms turned clammy and sweaty."Joel killed her?""He's a prime suspect for now, but we n
