Chapter 3

Delaney flinched.

"Your mom gave it to me. She said it would keep me safe."

"That belonged to my father."

"I didn't know."

She immediately reached for the clasp.

"I'll give it back."

The more she struggled, the more tangled the chain became.

A red mark appeared across her neck.

Tears filled her eyes.

Adrian grabbed her hands and stopped her.

His expression darkened.

"Your father was your mother's husband.

"She has a right to decide what happens to his things too."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Evelyn, it's a piece of jade. Delaney likes it. Can you not be generous for once?"

My eyes burned.

Adrian's patience snapped.

"Evelyn, don't forget how your father died. Your mom still hasn't forgiven you for it."

The room went silent.

A crack seemed to split straight through me.

Dad had died in a car accident while rushing out to find medical help during one of my trauma episodes.

The guilt had lived inside me ever since.

And now Adrian was dragging that wound open to make me surrender the only thing Dad had left me.

"Do you hear yourself?"

Adrian finally saw how badly I was shaking.

Regret crossed his face.

"I'm sorry.

"That was too far.

"I'll buy you something better."

The perfume on his clothes was Delaney's.

Nausea rolled through me.

I shoved past him.

Delaney stood.

"Maybe I should go. Evelyn clearly doesn't want me here."

She took one step and stumbled.

Adrian caught her and lifted her into his arms.

"Go where? You're hurt."

He carried her toward the guest room.

Without turning, he said, "Eat the soup."

"And sign the digital consent agreement on the tablet."

The tablet lit up.

The first page looked ordinary: image-release authorization, clinical education use, research dissemination.

Then I swiped to the second page.

My fingers went numb.

A video filled the screen. It showed a basement, and me strapped to a chair while fire footage played on a loop.

In another clip, an alarm sounded. I fell out of the chair and crawled across the floor with my hands over my ears. The panic was so severe I lost control of my bladder.

Delaney's voice came from behind the camera. "Evelyn, can you tell what's real and what's a hallucination now?"

My face wasn't blurred.

Nothing was blurred.

Every humiliation was visible.

The absurdity of it almost crushed me.

I carried the tablet into the guest room.

"How long have you been filming me?"

Delaney blinked.

"Three years.

"Ever since your first episode."

She spoke as if discussing weather.

"You have a very textbook trauma response.

"Screaming. Vomiting. Tremors. Loss of bladder control. Aggression."

I looked at Adrian.

"You agreed to this?"

He nodded.

"Delaney wants to help other patients.

"You don't understand how valuable this material can be for families."

Something inside me went cold.

I had thought there was nothing left in me that could still hurt.

I was wrong.

"I won't sign.

"And Adrian?"

He looked at me.

"We're done."

I hurled the tablet to the floor.

Then I went to the front door, took the suitcase I'd already packed, and left.

Behind me, Adrian gave a scornful laugh.

"Ten years together.

"She nearly died saving me.

"Since she got sick, she can't function without me."

He sounded completely certain.

"She's throwing a tantrum. Give her two days. She'll come back on her own."

"Ms. Vale, Delaney Croft has been found."Police called while I was signing the formal complaint.I handed over the photographs, the recovered group messages, and records showing Adrian entering and leaving an abandoned private hospital.I didn't forgive Delaney. And I wasn't going to accept Adrian turning illegal violence into proof of devotion.By the time police found Delaney, she was psychologically shattered.Bright lights made her scream. The sight of an officer made her drop to her knees.Doctors said the burns to her legs were severe and she would likely never walk normally again. When she woke, the first thing she said was that my mother had done this to her."Where's my mom?" she demanded. The officer told her, "Linda isn't your mother.""She's my godmother. Then bring her here. I have questions for her."Police later showed me hallway surveillance from the hospital.Mom was brought in by an aide. For some reason, she still looked hopeful."Delaney."Don't bl

"Evelyn? Is that you? Evelyn!"Adrian Falkner reached the foot of the stage just as I lowered the microphone. The audience was still applauding.I had just finished presenting the clinical direction of the Renewal Program: rebuilding after trauma, and helping patients regain the power to choose.A chair crashed in the back row.Adrian shoved past security and came straight toward me.He wore a suit that no longer fit properly.Dark circles hollowed his eyes.He was frighteningly thin. For the first time in his life, his hair looked neglected."You're alive."Thank God."You have no idea. I've spent three years looking for you."I held the edge of the podium. My expression didn't change."Sir, you have the wrong person."His face went white."How could you not be her?"Your voice."Your eyes."The scar on your left hand."He reached for my palm.I stepped back.Sebastian came onto the stage and stood between us."Mr. Falkner."Control yourself."Adrian stared a

"I didn't."Adrian's voice exploded from the tablet."Shut up. Just shut up."He drove his fist into the wall.Blood appeared across his knuckles. The man beside me turned off the screen."Let's introduce ourselves properly."Sebastian Armitage."I'm the international program director for the Hermann Trauma Research Institute."And I funded the Renewal Program you applied to."I looked at him."The fire was set on purpose," he said."When our people received your message and reached the venue, you were already unconscious."We only had enough time to arrange the replacement body and remove you."You were in critical condition. Adrian's eyes snapped open."There was a fire where Ms. Marlowe was being held."The guard could barely speak."Firefighters found a body inside."The remains couldn't be identified visually."Adrian stood so fast the room seemed to tilt with him."What?"His face turned white."What did you say?"The guard lowered his eyes."Investigators believe old wiring shorted."By the time the fire department arrived, the room was fully involved."Adrian didn't wait to hear the rest. He was already out the door.Linda had been chatting with Delaney about the celebration. When she saw his face, her voice shook."Adrian, what's wrong? What happened?"He threw the words over his shoulder."It's Evelyn."Linda and Delaney exchanged a look, then hurried out after him.I woke with an IV in my wrist.A man in a black shirt sat beside the bed with a file in his hand. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows. His voice was cool. But there was no pressure in it."The doctors said you i

I got into a rideshare with my suitcase.Mom called before we'd gone two blocks. Her first sentence was a scream."Evelyn Marlowe, if you still consider me your mother, get back here and sign that agreement."Ungrateful brat. You're making a war over one stupid pendant?"I hung up.At the hotel, every card I owned was declined. They'd all been frozen.I sat in the lobby and started calling friends. Some said nothing and ended the call.Others didn't answer. One finally picked up."Evelyn... Adrian told everyone not to help."Her voice sounded helpless."He says you're family and you just need to go home, apologize, and stop making things worse."Delaney had posted a collage online: luxury gifts, flowers, dinner. The center photo showed her leaning between Adrian and my mother, all three smiling. The caption read: [Love is obvious.
