Chapter 4

Autor: September Almond
I got into a rideshare with my suitcase.

Mom called before we'd gone two blocks.

Her first sentence was a scream.

"Evelyn Marlowe, if you still consider me your mother, get back here and sign that agreement.

"Ungrateful brat. You're making a war over one stupid pendant?"

I hung up.

At the hotel, every card I owned was declined. They'd all been frozen.

I sat in the lobby and started calling friends.

Some said nothing and ended the call.

Others didn't answer.

One finally picked up.

"Evelyn... Adrian told everyone not to help."

Her voice sounded helpless.

"He says you're family and you just need to go home, apologize, and stop making things worse."

Delaney had posted a collage online: luxury gifts, flowers, dinner.

The center photo showed her leaning between Adrian and my mother, all three smiling.

The caption read: [Love is obvious. Nothing beats knowing someone has your back.]

I spent the night in a twenty-four-hour convenience store.

The next morning, two private security men blocked me outside.

"Ms. Marlowe. Mr. Falkner asked us to bring you home."

I stepped back.

One of them struck me.

The world disappeared.

When I woke, Adrian and Mom were seated in the front-row VIP section of a large conference hall.

Delaney stood onstage holding a microphone.

Her portrait filled the LED screen behind her.

My heart stopped.

Then my own face appeared.

Clip after clip played: the basement, the alarm, the panic attacks, the crawling, the incontinence.

I tried to reach the stage.

Security stopped me.

"That's the unstable woman from Dr. Croft's case study."

"The one who wet herself?"

"That's disgusting."

Whispers washed over me, full of curiosity, contempt, and amusement.

"What you're doing is illegal!"

I screamed until my voice cracked.

Adrian grabbed my wrist hard enough to make my bones ache.

"Have you lost your mind?

"This is the most important day of Delaney's career. Are you trying to destroy her?"

Mom stood and pointed at me.

"I watched how much work Delaney put into your treatment this year.

"You already killed your father. You've dragged Adrian down for years. Now you're trying to ruin her too?"

My whole body shook.

My chest hurt too much to breathe.

All I could do was shake my head as tears flew.

Delaney hurried down from the stage.

"Evelyn is just overwhelmed."

She made her voice tremble.

"I know she doesn't mean it."

Adrian's breathing was heavy.

"Evelyn, apologize to Delaney."

That was the moment I broke.

"I'm the victim.

"She filmed me without consent. She humiliated me. And you want me to apologize?"

People began pointing.

Adrian's expression turned cold.

He looked toward the guards.

"Put her in the backstage storage room.

"Let her out when she's ready to admit what she did wrong.

"Today belongs to Delaney. I won't let anyone ruin it.

"Not even you."

The guards dragged me away while I fought them.

The storage room was narrow and windowless.

The lock clicked behind me.

I don't know how long I was inside.

Then I smelled it, something acrid and burning. Smoke.

My entire body froze.

Strength disappeared from my hands and legs.

Orange light flickered beneath the door.

The room tilted.

Then everything went black.

Hours later, the forum ended.

Adrian took Delaney and Linda to another celebration dinner.

It was almost dawn by the time they returned home.

Adrian dropped onto the sofa and closed his eyes.

"Let Evelyn out.

"She's had enough time. She should understand what she did wrong by now."

He didn't see the guard standing nearby with a phone in his hand, pale and shaking.

"Sir...

"Ms. Marlowe..."

"Something happened."

"Ms. Vale, Delaney Croft has been found."Police called while I was signing the formal complaint.I handed over the photographs, the recovered group messages, and records showing Adrian entering and leaving an abandoned private hospital.I didn't forgive Delaney. And I wasn't going to accept Adrian turning illegal violence into proof of devotion.By the time police found Delaney, she was psychologically shattered.Bright lights made her scream. The sight of an officer made her drop to her knees.Doctors said the burns to her legs were severe and she would likely never walk normally again. When she woke, the first thing she said was that my mother had done this to her."Where's my mom?" she demanded. The officer told her, "Linda isn't your mother.""She's my godmother. Then bring her here. I have questions for her."Police later showed me hallway surveillance from the hospital.Mom was brought in by an aide. For some reason, she still looked hopeful."Delaney."Don't bl

Adrian stood outside the research laboratory holding a folder. It was his twenty-seventh consecutive day.For the first twenty, he had asked to see me.He never made it past reception. For the next seven, he brought patent-transfer documents. When Armitage Biotech acquired what remained of his company, he didn't fight the sale.He kept only several core patents. Now he wanted to give them to Sebastian."I don't want money."I just want to stay by your side."Even if all I do is bring you a glass of water."I didn't take the folder."Armitage Biotech doesn't hire useless people.""I can volunteer for clinical studies."The Renewal Program is still under observation."I'll sign anything.""Mr. Falkner, human-subject research goes through an ethics board."It's not a place for you to buy redemption."His throat moved."Then what can I do?""Go downstairs and register."The team needs a data-entry clerk."He nodded immediately."Okay."Anything."As long as you'll

"Evelyn? Is that you? Evelyn!"Adrian Falkner reached the foot of the stage just as I lowered the microphone. The audience was still applauding.I had just finished presenting the clinical direction of the Renewal Program: rebuilding after trauma, and helping patients regain the power to choose.A chair crashed in the back row.Adrian shoved past security and came straight toward me.He wore a suit that no longer fit properly.Dark circles hollowed his eyes.He was frighteningly thin. For the first time in his life, his hair looked neglected."You're alive."Thank God."You have no idea. I've spent three years looking for you."I held the edge of the podium. My expression didn't change."Sir, you have the wrong person."His face went white."How could you not be her?"Your voice."Your eyes."The scar on your left hand."He reached for my palm.I stepped back.Sebastian came onto the stage and stood between us."Mr. Falkner."Control yourself."Adrian stared a

"I didn't."Adrian's voice exploded from the tablet."Shut up. Just shut up."He drove his fist into the wall.Blood appeared across his knuckles. The man beside me turned off the screen."Let's introduce ourselves properly."Sebastian Armitage."I'm the international program director for the Hermann Trauma Research Institute."And I funded the Renewal Program you applied to."I looked at him."The fire was set on purpose," he said."When our people received your message and reached the venue, you were already unconscious."We only had enough time to arrange the replacement body and remove you."You were in critical condition. Adrian's eyes snapped open."There was a fire where Ms. Marlowe was being held."The guard could barely speak."Firefighters found a body inside."The remains couldn't be identified visually."Adrian stood so fast the room seemed to tilt with him."What?"His face turned white."What did you say?"The guard lowered his eyes."Investigators believe old wiring shorted."By the time the fire department arrived, the room was fully involved."Adrian didn't wait to hear the rest. He was already out the door.Linda had been chatting with Delaney about the celebration. When she saw his face, her voice shook."Adrian, what's wrong? What happened?"He threw the words over his shoulder."It's Evelyn."Linda and Delaney exchanged a look, then hurried out after him.I woke with an IV in my wrist.A man in a black shirt sat beside the bed with a file in his hand. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows. His voice was cool. But there was no pressure in it."The doctors said you i
