"Inmate 1151, you're free to go. We wish you a fresh start."
The guard's voice echoed through the corridor as he escorted a young woman toward the prison exit. Outside, rain hammered against the ground. Vessara Barclay stood silently at the end of the narrow iron passageway, her oversized prison uniform hanging loosely from her slender frame. Five years. Five years trapped behind these walls. As she stared at the storm beyond the gates, memories she had spent years burying surfaced once more. Eight years ago, when she was only fifteen, Selena Laurent had shown up at the Laurent estate with a DNA test in hand. Overnight, everything changed. The Laurent family welcomed Selena back with tears of joy, celebrating the return of their long-lost daughter. And Vessara learned the truth. She wasn't their biological child. She was nothing more than a baby who had been switched at birth. Even then, Vessara had never blamed Selena. She had tried her best to make up for the years Selena had lost. Again and again, Selena framed her. Again and again, the family chose to believe Selena. Yet Vessara always found excuses for her. Selena had grown up without her real family. Of course she'd feel insecure. Of course she'd be afraid of losing everything she had just gained. That was what Vessara told herself. Until three years later. Selena caused a fatal hit-and-run accident. And the Laurent family didn't hesitate for a second. They drugged eighteen-year-old Vessara. Forced her to sign a confession. Then sent her to prison in Selena's place. The daughter they had raised for eighteen years became a disposable sacrifice the moment their real daughter needed saving. A bitter smile touched Vessara's lips. Family. As Vessara drifted into the painful memories she'd tried so hard to bury, a deafening roar suddenly echoed across the sky.BRRRRMMMM— The thunderous beat of helicopter blades shattered the steady rhythm of the rain. Vessara's thoughts came to an abrupt halt. Her eyes narrowed as she looked up. Several black SUVs lined up outside the prison gates. Above them, helicopters circled low in the sky like steel monsters watching from above. Dozens of men in black suits stepped out at the same time. Neat. Silent. Dangerous. And in the next second— every single one of them lowered their heads. “Welcome back, Boss.” Silence instantly swallowed the entire area. The prison guards froze. Even the newly released inmates instinctively backed away in fear. Vessara slowly lifted her gaze. Her expression remained calm. “Roy.” The tall man standing at the front immediately straightened his posture. “Yes, Boss.” “I just got out of prison,” Vessara said flatly. “Not back from winning a war.” Cold sweat instantly appeared on Roy’s forehead. “Sorry, Boss. The boys were just too excited to welcome you back.” Vessara glanced at the helicopters overhead. “Five seconds.” “Get rid of all of this.” “NOW.” “Y-Yes!” Within seconds, the entire convoy disappeared as if it had never existed. The helicopters flew away. The SUVs retreated. The men in black vanished into the rain. Until only a single black Porsche Panamera remained parked outside the gates. Silence returned once more. Vessara walked toward the car. Then stopped. Slowly, she turned to look back at the prison behind her. The place that had destroyed her life. The place where Selena had visited her with that sweet innocent smile— while confessing how the family had chosen to sacrifice her. How they drugged her. Placed her in the driver’s seat. And let her take the fall for Selena after Selena killed a little girl in a hit-and-run accident. Even after that— they still continued taking Vessara’s blood regularly for Selena’s medical treatments. As if she did not even deserve to be treated like a human being. Vessara’s eyes slowly darkened. Five years. For five whole years, they had thought prison would break her. But they never imagined that in the most dangerous corner of that prison, she would meet a mentor who changed her life. They never realized that instead of destroying her, prison had created a monster. Without another glance at the towering walls behind her, she stepped into the waiting Porsche Panamera. The door closed with a soft click, shutting out the rain. "Where's the Laurent family?" she asked. Leaning back against the leather seat, Vessara watched raindrops race down the window as the car pulled away from the prison gates. Roy, seated in the driver's seat, carefully glanced at her through the rearview mirror before answering. "At the Grand Hotel." A brief pause followed. "They're hosting Selena Laurent's engagement party tonight." The air inside the car instantly grew colder. Vessara's eyes narrowed slightly. An engagement party. How fitting. She had spent five years rotting in prison for Selena's crime, while the woman responsible was celebrating the happiest day of her life. A low chuckle escaped her lips. “How interesting.” “I went to prison for her.” “And she’s celebrating her engagement on the very day I’m released?” Her eyes slowly lifted. “In that case…” “It would be rude of me not to congratulate her personally.”“Mrs. Barclay, what were you going to tell Razen? I’m honestly curious.”Vessara followed up on Isabella’s earlier words, her eyes practically glued to Isabella as she stared at her without blinking.Isabella’s heart skipped a beat. She suddenly realized what she had just said and quickly waved her hands, trying to laugh it off and change the subject. But the moment she looked up and met Vessara’s curious gaze, a voice deep inside her kept telling her over and over:Don’t hide this from Vessara. For a moment, Isabella couldn’t say anything. She simply stood there, frozen, a trace of confusion in her eyes.A few seconds later, Alexander finally noticed how stiff Isabella had become. He quickly stepped in front of her, forcing a smile onto his face as he awkwardly said, “It’s really nothing. Most of it was just business-related stuff, and you probably wouldn&rsq
At Vessara's words, a flash of surprise crossed Isabella White's face. Her cheeks immediately turned a little red, but she still shook her head seriously, though her voice was noticeably lacking in confidence.“No… no. Why would we ever hurt you? Just focus on your own things and don't rush…”The more she spoke, the more flustered she became. In the end, Isabella simply stopped and quietly studied Vessara's expression.A few seconds later, after making sure Vessara didn't seem about to say anything else shocking, Isabella finally breathed a sigh of relief. The tension in her expression eased considerably.Unfortunately, that relief lasted only a few seconds.Vessara paused before suddenly speaking again.“Well, if that's the case, why don't I go upstairs and get some rest? It doesn't look like you really need me here anyway.”She paused again and looked straight at the three of them, blinking inno
As Isabella laughed, she suddenly realized something was off. She immediately snapped out of it and turned to look at Razen.Clearing her throat, Isabella finally spoke seriously.“What we were just talking about does have something to do with you, but not that much. Never mind. I don’t really know how to explain it to you. It’s better if your Uncle Alex tells you himself.”With that, Isabella nudged Alexander.Alexander seemed to snap back to reality. He quickly nodded, pushing his glasses higher up the bridge of his nose before speaking with a serious expression.“Have you looked into the people on your company’s board of directors recently? A few of them may be members of the Valdises’ branch families, but they all have their own agendas. They’re not exactly easy to read.”Alexander had made his point clear enough that Razen finally caught on. He frowned slightly and asked instinctivel
Seeing that Vessara was actually about to head upstairs, Emilia could no longer hold herself back. She sprang to her feet almost instantly and hurried after her.The moment Emilia's hand grabbed Vessara's arm, she suddenly threw herself backward.“Mom, help! She is trying to—”The cry for help was cut off mid-sentence.Emilia's eyes widened as she stared at Vessara, who was holding onto her.Vessara's face remained completely expressionless. She simply looked ahead calmly.“What? Don't tell me you're going to say I pushed you?”Once Emilia had regained her balance, Vessara released her without hesitation.Caught completely off guard, Emilia went tumbling to the floor.Pain shot through her entire body, and only then did Emilia seem to come back to her senses.“Ah!”“Enough!”Isabella finally couldn't take it anymore and spoke in a cold voice.
‘For a moment, everyone in the room was stunned by Emilia’s sudden move. No one even had time to figure out what exactly she was trying to do.Then Emilia spoke through her tears.“Sis, I really know I was wrong. I know I’ve done so many things to hurt you in the past. Please forgive me. I really can’t survive out there anymore. Please don’t let Dad and Mom kick me out again, okay?”Her voice was filled with pain and despair. Yet the moment those words left Emilia’s mouth, Vessara was rendered almost speechless. She looked Emilia up and down before finally speaking.“From the moment I walked into this house until now, I don’t think I’ve said much of anything. So what exactly are you trying to imply by putting on this little performance? Are you trying to make it look like I’m always bullying you at home? Or is there something else?”“If you have something to
Vessara took a deep breath, doing her best to calm herself before looking up at Razen again.“Do you have anything else planned?”“Not for now.”He had gotten the answer he wanted, yet Razen looked somewhat disappointed. Even his voice sounded flat, almost as if he were only answering her out of obligation.Vessara was too distracted by her own thoughts to notice. She simply nodded.“Okay. Then I’ll take care of a few things on my end during this time. That way, we can leave as soon as the time comes.”When she thought about it carefully, there actually wasn’t much for her to deal with.Razen remained silent for a while, and Vessara finally noticed that something was wrong. She looked up at him. That was when she realized he seemed different from usual.Today, he looked like someone had just cost him several million dollars. His entire face was practically scrunched
