Chapter 1

When I got back to the rental apartment, night had already fallen. The air was thick with dampness and mold, mixed with the greasy scent of cheap takeout. On the table sat a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup, still steaming.

Tiffany Jensen was sitting on the edge of the bed, scrolling through her phone. She did not even look up when I walked in.

A few hours ago, I would have been over the moon and thought that, despite her harsh words, she still cared about me deep down. Now, I walked past the table without a glance, heading straight for the beat-up wardrobe in the corner to pack my few faded T-shirts.

Tiffany grumbled, "Who are you putting on this show for? You're so dramatic. I said a few things to you, and you're still sulking? What kind of man holds a grudge over something so small? I still remember when I found you. You could barely speak when you first woke up. Now you only have a few headaches, yet you act like it's the end of the world."

Her muttering sounded exactly like that condescending tone she had used in the car that afternoon.

I stopped what I was doing and slowly turned around, looking at her with cold eyes for the first time. She instinctively put down her phone and sat up straight.

"What's your problem now? If you've got something to say, say it. If not, go take a shower. You reek."

I remained calm, asking, "Where did you put my watch? The old one I was wearing when I woke up."

That watch was the only thing I had been wearing when I came to. It was my only personal possession after losing my memory. Its face was worn, the band shiny with age, but the back had a faded, elegant letter "S" engraved on it.

I had always felt it could help me recover my past, and I treasured that watch more than my own life.

I remembered once at the construction site, I had fallen off the scaffolding. When I came to, my first words were, "Where's my watch? Is it still there?"

Tiffany replied through teary eyes, "Don't worry. As long as I'm here, it won't be lost."

That promise still echoed in my ears, but now, Tiffany said impatiently, "How should I know where you lost it? It's just a beat-up old watch. Why are you making such a big deal out of it? If it's gone, it's gone. I'll buy you a new one tomorrow."

I did not argue with her, just quietly pulled out my phone. The screen was small and the signal weak, but I managed to load Ethan Parker's latest social media post.

In the photo, a hand wearing a Patek Philippe was holding my old watch between two fingers with obvious disgust.

The caption read: [An antique gift from a friend. She ripped it off that little lapdog she's been keeping. What taste, am I right?]

The comments below were full of malicious glee.

[I heard Tiffany's little boyfriend is some amnesiac idiot. Is she bored with him already?]

[That watch looks cursed. Ethan, you should just toss it before it contaminates you.]

So, this was her idea of protecting it, by treating it like garbage and handing it over to be someone's punchline.

I shut my phone off as my stomach churned violently. I could not hold it back anymore and rushed into the bathroom, retching. Along with it, I threw up all the bitterness and humiliation of the past five years.

Tiffany rushed in after me and said, "William Shaw, what is wrong with you? Why are you still throwing up? We are going to the hospital right now!"

She tried to pull me up.

"Don't touch me. You disgust me," I hissed, each word deliberate.

Tiffany had lost a lot of weight and shed all those flashy designer labels. She was now wearing a simple, modest dress as she stood quietly in the corner. She was no longer that radiant Jensen family heiress. The Jensen Group had been left teetering on the brink of collapse after her father's failed investments and my behind-the-scenes sabotage, existing in name only. When she saw me step out of the Rolls-Royce, she ignored the security guards trying to stop her and rushed at me like a madwoman."William!" Sophia instinctively moved to block her, but I raised my hand to stop her.I stared at the woman who had nearly destroyed the first half of my life.Tiffany grabbed my arm as tears poured down her face. "Just give me one more chance, please? I don't want anything else. I don't want the Jensen family, I don't want anything… I just want you!""Ms. Jensen, do you know what? The first thing I did after coming back was have someone investigate that car accident from years ago."Sh

Sophia and I had grown up together, and our families had been close for generations. Before I lost my memory, she had always been the person I trusted and relied on the most. She had taken me street racing, taught me how to handle difficult corporate documents, and even when I was kidnapped at 18, she had charged in alone and pointed a gun at the kidnappers to save me.To me, she had always been the one who could do anything and shield me from every storm. However, the sudden car accident destroyed everything. When I woke up, my mind was blank, and the first person I saw was Tiffany, who had happened to pass by.Due to an urgent crisis with the family business, Sophia arrived one step too late. However, just that one step cost us five years.During those five years, she had tried countless times to bring me home. However, I did not recognize her at all. Whenever she got close, I resisted frantically, even hurting myself. In the end, she had compromised. She disappeared from my

Seeing that I did not stop Sophia, Tiffany clung desperately to the doorframe and turned all her fury on me instead"William, don't you hate women like her the most? Those high-and-mighty rich know-it-alls? Why are you taking her side? Are you choosing her instead of me?"She shouted, "You ungrateful liar! Is there a single honest word that comes out of your mouth? When you told me you loved me at the construction site, were you acting too? Look me in the eyes and answer me!""Liar?" I quietly mumbled that word, then smiled. I slowly turned my head to meet her crazed stare. "Aren't you the liar? The heiress of the Jensen family, Ms. Tiffany Jensen, slumming it with an amnesiac poor guy, playing house for five years. That must have been such a hardship for you."Tiffany stumbled back a step. "It wasn't like that, William. I wanted to tell you for so long, I really did!"She could not meet my eyes. "William, I admit I didn't have good intentions at first. I just wanted to spite my

Tiffany started taking off her expensive cocktail dress in front of everyone. The sound of the zipper being pulled down was unnaturally clear and jarring in the deathly silent room."Tiffany! What are you doing?" Ethan was the first to react, rushing forward to stop her.Everyone around us was stunned, watching this absurd scene unfold.Tiffany acted like she had not heard him, swatting Ethan's hand away as the dress slipped from her smooth shoulders. All she had left on was a black lace lingerie set.Barefoot, she walked up to me and slowly sank to her knees. She looked up at me. "William, look. I'm already on my knees. Now, it's your turn. As long as you get on your knees too and admit you were wrong, I'll allow you to keep loving me."The entire room instantly fell silent, and everyone was frightened by her unhinged behavior. Then again, why should I apologize? She was the one who let others trample my dignity, and she was the one who had personally shattered all my illusions

Ethan casually pulled a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills from his Hermes wallet and threw them in my face. "Here, this covers it. That's enough to buy you a truckload of this garbage."My teeth ground together as I raised my fist and swung it at his hateful face."William, are you insane?" Tiffany screamed, quickly throwing herself in front of Ethan. She grabbed my wrist in a death grip."He already paid you back. What more do you want? You're just trying to extort more money, aren't you? Is it really worth making such a scene over some stupid notebook?"I suddenly froze, all the strength draining from my body. In her eyes, all my pain and struggle had been reduced to extortion. Everything I had given her was apparently worthless.I pried her fingers off my wrist one by one and calmly pulled my hand back. Then, I turned away, wanting to escape this disgusting farce."Stop right there!" Ethan's voice came from behind me. "I paid you for your notebook, so we're even on that. But

Tiffany's hand froze in mid-air. "W-What did you say?"Just then, the apartment door was violently shoved open. Ethan stumbled in drunk with his arm around a woman, followed by a group of his buddies whistling and catcalling. He immediately spotted us frozen by the bathroom door.Without hesitation, he walked straight to Tiffany and yanked her away from me. Then, she pulled her roughly into his embrace, resting his chin intimately against her shoulder. "Babe, why are you hiding in a place like this? I've been looking everywhere for you." His lips were practically brushing her earlobe as he shot me a contemptuous glance.Only after catching my stare did she start trying to struggle free, hissing, "Ethan, stop it. This is my home!"Ethan laughed exaggeratedly as he looked around. "Your home? Babe, you're calling this dump a home? I could have this place bulldozed tonight and build you a golden bathroom if I wanted."He tightened his grip even more, pulling her closer while stari
