Chapter 4 Give Me Back My Child

Autor: Avery Wells
Bryce suddenly shot me a text after dinner. I thought he was calling me to question where I had taken the baby. To my surprise, I opened the chat to find two instructions.

"Selina and I won't be coming back tonight. Take good care of the baby."

The Newton family's annual banquet is tomorrow. Bring the baby here before 10 p.m. Don't forget that you're our nanny now. You can forget about ever seeing the child again if you're late or if you run your mouth."

I looked up at the antique furnishings and elegant décor of the estate around me before happily replying with a single word, "Okay."

'Don't worry. Not only would I not be late, but I would also arrive before either of you,' I thought inwardly.

I put on an elegant dress on the day of the Newton family's annual banquet. I dressed my child in a bright colour silk romper and stood on the second-floor balcony overlooking the grand hall below.

Today's gathering included not only members of the Newton family's extended branches but also many prominent figures from elite society.

Bryce and Selina had already arrived. One was dressed in a bespoke suit, while the other was in a long gown.

They moved through the crowd hand-in-hand, accepting compliments and congratulations.

"You must be Mrs. Newton! You two are truly a perfect match!"

Selina smiled gracefully and raised her glass.

"You're too kind. We're also grateful for everyone's support of Bryce's business. I hope we'll have many opportunities to work together in the future."

The guests eagerly echoed their agreement. Beside Selina, Bryce watched with pride and affection in his eyes.

Suddenly, someone asked loudly, "By the way, didn't Mrs. Newton give birth to the family's first grandson? Why didn't you bring him today?"

Bryce's smile didn't even waver the slightest as he replied, "The baby's still very young. He'd only cry in an environment like this. However, I did tell the nanny to bring him over. My father is always busy and rarely returns home.

"Since he's finally back, he should at least meet his grandson."

The crowd nodded approvingly upon hearing his answer.

A moment later, I got his message.

"Where are you? I told you not to be late. Why haven't you arrived yet?"

I shifted the baby to one arm and was about to reply when hurried footsteps suddenly echoed up the staircase.

Selina came rushing upstairs. Bryce followed close behind with an irritated look on his face.

Since there were so many people downstairs, he lowered his voice and said, "Good thing my dad isn't here yet. Otherwise, you'd have gotten us all killed. My dad hates tardiness."

Only then did he notice my dress. Then, his eyes lit up.

"When did you buy this dress? I've never seen you wear it before."

The expression on Selina's face immediately stiffened. She immediately stepped in between us.

"How can you wear something like that? You're our nanny, not the lady of the house."

Bryce snapped back to reality and frowned upon hearing her remark.

"Selina's right. This is the Newton family's annual banquet. People will think our family uncouth if they see a nanny dressed to the nines." Then, he extended his hands toward the baby. "Give the child to Selina and leave through the back entrance."

Selina reached forward to snatch the baby from my arms the second those words fell from his lips.

I tightened my grip and turned away.

"No one touches my child."

"Jessica!" Bryce barked sharply. "Did you forget what I told you? You'll never see this child again if you keep this up!" Then, he grabbed hold of the baby's blanket himself.

My expression turned cold as I yanked it back and turned toward the stairs.

I'd only taken a few steps when Bryce seized the back of my collar and dragged me backward. The fabric tightened around my throat, and pain shot through my neck. I could barely breathe.

I struggled to keep one arm around my son as I swung my free hand behind me, trying to pry Bryce off. At the same time, Selina rushed forward and grabbed the baby's arm.

"No... Let go of my baby..."

Just as they were seconds away from tearing him out of my arms, a nearby nanny noticed the commotion and cried out, "Mrs. Newton! Young Master!"

The title made Selina's eyes flash with malice, and her long nails dug cruelly into the baby's tender skin.

"Did she just call you Mrs. Newton? No wonder you dressed like this. You were actually trying to—"

"Bryce! Let go of your mother and your brother!" A furious command exploded from behind them.

My baby burst into tears at that exact moment.

Bryce froze and sucked in a sharp breath right after.

"So tell me, Bryce. What use is there in keeping you around?" I tittered, twisting the knife further.Bryce's face turned stark white as he swallowed. The combative line in his shoulders had slumped in defeat."I'm sorry, Jessica. I was wrong. I shouldn't have lied to you. I shouldn't have treated you that way. Can you forgive me? I swear I'll only love you from now on. I'll divorce Selina and marry you! I'm begging you. Please don't take everything away from me..."The nanny had already called for the bodyguards, and they didn't hesitate to drag him out of my sight. Bryce panicked and roared, "Jessica, I love you! I had no choice but to marry Selina! Please believe me one more time! I'm begging you!"The study door swung open. Derrick strode over and positioned himself in front of me."Are you alright?""I'm fine, but he seems a little unstable. Should we send him to the hospital?"Derrick nodded and ordered, "Take Bryce to the hospital.""No! Don't!" Bryce struggled violent

"Sure. I'll make the arrangements. We'll visit the Hawthorn family tomorrow." Derrick interrupted me before I could continue rambling on and on. Then, he immediately called his secretary and instructed her to clear his schedule for the next day. When he saw me slack-jawed, he reached over and placed his hand on top of mine as he said reassuringly, "This is the right thing to do. You don't have to tiptoe over things like these."The tension I'd been carrying instantly melted away as I instinctively intertwined my fingers with his.All traces of the disastrous banquet had been removed by the time we returned to the estate. The mansion had returned to its usual solemn atmosphere.Bryce was standing outside the study. He didn't even dare to meet my eyes."Dad, you're back."Derrick didn't look at him as he said blandly, "And?"Bryce clenched his jaw. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment before forcing out the words. "Mom, welcome back."My mood improved immediately. I didn't hesi

"Rumor has it that Bryce isn't actually your biological son. He's the child of your late brother. He was raised by the others and only formally adopted by you after you took over the Newton family. You only remained unmarried because you already had a son under your name. "However, Bryce has no mind for business, and the Newton family has been losing a considerable amount of money every year. If that's the case, why not have another heir?"The office fell silent for several seconds.Derrick finally looked at me. He eyed me from head to toe before dismissing the secretary while ending the video conference. Then, he leaned back in his chair and said, "You said you could give me a child who is one hundred percent a Newton by blood, but the Newton family has very few descendants. My brother and I were the only ones in my generation, and he died young. "Now, Bryce is the only heir to the Newton fortune. Are you implying that your child is Bryce's?"I nodded. "Yes. He's Bryce's biolo

"Selina is the second daughter of the Paxen family. We're a perfect match, and a marriage alliance would be beneficial to—"Derrick didn't give him a chance to finish as he tugged lightly on my hand, indicating that the car had already arrived at the entrance."Enough. We'll discuss your affairs later."As we drove toward the hospital, I looked out the window and saw Bryce standing on the second-floor balcony, slamming his hand against the railing in fury and shouting something I couldn't make out. When Selina tried to place a hand on his shoulder to comfort him, he didn't hesitate to violently shove her away."Let me see your neck." Derrick handed the baby to the nanny in the front passenger seat and turned my head toward him."I shouldn't have let you wear this dress. The collar is too tight. Still, Bryce shouldn't have manhandled you. I can't imagine what would've happened if I hadn't arrived in time."I couldn't help but feel awkward under his intense scrutiny. So, I instin

I couldn't see the injury myself, but I hissed in pain when I reached up and touched my neck.Derrick lowered his head and examined it carefully. His expression darkened instantly. When he looked back at Bryce, his eyes were filled with fury."Bryce, is this how you treat your elders?" he growled.Bryce opened his mouth. "E-Elder? She...""That's enough. I don't have time to listen to your explanations." Derrick cut him off sharply. Then, he looked at the guests gathered below and announced, "Everyone, I need to take my wife and my younger son to the hospital immediately. We'll be cutting this banquet short. I apologize for taking up your time. We will hold another banquet some other day." With that, he instructed the bodyguards to bring the car around. He held the baby in one arm, took my hand with the other, and motioned for a nanny to follow us.The entire room fell silent for several seconds. Then, an explosion of shocked voices erupted throughout the hall."Did Mr. Derr

The suffocating grip on my collar suddenly disappeared. However, Selina hadn't realized what was happening. Then, I held my son tightly against my chest as I soothed him with gentle murmurs.Meanwhile, Selina was still shouting indignantly, "Why are you guys stopping me? She's stealing my child! You should be helping me take him back!" Then, she turned toward Bryce. "Bryce, what are you standing there for?"The baby's cries echoed through the hall. Combined with Selina's furious yelling, the commotion drew everyone's attention as guests looked up toward the second floor. As I comforted my child, I turned around and saw that Bryce was staring at the newcomer with naked fear.It was obvious he hadn't even processed what Derrick had said. All he knew was that he was terrified of the latter.Selina grew even more anxious
