Chapter 6

I knew my life hadn’t been exactly a walk in the park. However, this whole kidnapping ordeal was entirely new. In other words, I wasn’t some wealthy heir or a high-ranking official's child, so I couldn't fathom why they'd bother abducting me!

I was awakened by a splash of water.

The surroundings were dimly lit, probably some sort of basement. I shivered from being drenched in icy water and strained to open my eyes, looking at the person in front of me.

I didn't recognize the man.

Nonetheless, my father, positioned behind the man, remained just as loathsome as before.

As I regained consciousness, my father's face briefly contorted with malevolence. It appeared that he had a strong urge to approach me and reprimand me, yet he held back because of the formidable figure before him.

"Lizzie Rees?"

I shrank back, too frightened to utter a word.

This man, David Johnson, radiated an air of apathy and authority that I couldn't dare to challenge.
