Chapter 219: Paid Actors

Lizzie

I was still walking the argument in circles when the knock came. It was not Reese. Reese would not knock on his own door.

“Who is it?” My voice came out thin. The headache behind my eyes had turned the whole afternoon into a pulse.

“It’s me.” Roman.

I dragged the back of my hand across my face and sat up straighter, as if posture could hide the wreckage. “Come in.”

The door opened and he stepped through with Miles against his chest, the baby’s cheek squashed sli

I remember Lizzie in book1, night after night watching scary movies literally facing her fears! She was afraid but was also fierce & courageous at the same time! I miss that Lizzie… If labor is her new nightmare I’d like to see Lizzie on the couch one day snacking & watching birth videos lolol

I love Roman’s character so much. His advice was so spot on! From bringing Miles as a buffer, offering Lizzie a way out, and explaining the “currency” of loving your spouse vs child was so mature and helpful. Roman being that healthy father-like figure to Lizzie brought tears to my eyes :,)

Chapter 219: Paid Actors LizzieI was still walking the argument in circles when the knock came. It was not Reese. Reese would not knock on his own door.“Who is it?” My voice came out thin. The headache behind my eyes had turned the whole afternoon into a pulse.“It’s me.” Roman.I dragged the back of my hand across my face and sat up straighter, as if posture could hide the wreckage. “Come in.”The door opened and he stepped through with Miles against his chest, the baby’s cheek squashed slightly into his shirt, headphones gone now, pacifier absent. Roman offered a half-smile that looked almost apologetic. “Hope you don’t mind. Just took him from Ramsey.”“Of course not.” I shifted over. “Sit.”He sat with a low groan and, before I could prepare myself, held his son out. “Take him for a second. My arms are done.” The child was in my lap before the protest or excuse could form. For a full second neither of us moved. Miles looked at me. I looked at him. It was a ridiculous, serious

  • From Lies To Loyalty    Then Keep Bending

Chapter 218: Then Keep Bending Reese “Lauren claims she has Nathan’s unsent letters,” I said. “They suggest he was afraid of the tapes going public. She also eavesdropped on my conversation with Lizzie. The bitch recorded it.” Roman frowned for a second, then snapped his fingers as the name slotted into place. “Lauren. The White heiress. The delusional one.”I almost laughed. “Don’t tell me you forgot who she was.”He exhaled, eyes on Reginald’s portrait above the fireplace. The painted version of our father looked down on the living room with the same cold patience the living one used on the driveway. “She’s not memorable. There’s just something about her being in this house that sets my teeth on edge. Might be the fact that she’s sleeping with her brother.” “She told me she’s adopted.” I let out a short, incredulous breath. “Worst lie I have heard in a while, and that is saying something in this family.”Roman’s mouth twisted. “Obviously a lie. She’s trying to sand the edges of

Chapter 217: I Found Letters Reese The water in the stone pool at the side of the manor was as dark as I remembered. No one came here. That was the point. It sat too close to the trees, too far from the polished paths the family preferred, a leftover piece of the grounds that had never been worth civilizing. It was the only place left that did not want anything from me. Especially my sanity.Nothing in the house was meeting in the middle. Lizzie would not keep the child for my sake. I would not stand by and watch her erase it because of a fear that belonged to people who had already failed her. Those two sentences had been circling each other for an hour and neither one had budged.I had not meant the threat the way it had come out of my mouth. I wanted her to understand I was not playing. That this was not another year she could bargain into ten. That I would not smile and call it love while she treated our child like a problem to be solved in private. That did not mean I would f

Chapter 216: Try Your Luck Roman It felt like old times the second my hand closed on the door.I drew a breath and already had an idea of what her fury would look like. Sav did not lecture first when she was this angry. She struck. She must have believed a slap was supposed to rearrange something in my skull. And I had learned, years ago, not to dodge it. Taking it was how I told her that she would always be safe with me. That she could come apart on me and I would still be standing when she was done.I opened the door expecting the hit.Nothing came.I stopped on the threshold, thrown more by the absence than I would have been by the sting. She walked out of the bathroom and paused when she saw me planted there like an idiot, a frown pulling at her mouth.“What are you doing standing in the doorway?” The leftover anger was still in her voice. I stepped in and shut the door. Then carefully placed the gun on the nightstand. “Nothing. Thought I had you figured out. Turns out I don’

  • From Lies To Loyalty    Not A Theory

Chapter 215: Not A Theory LizzieHe was happy. That was the first thing I understood, and it was the thing that broke the entire room in half. The news that had hollowed me out in Sav’s bathroom had lit him from the inside. He had looked at the words on a stick and seen a future. I had looked at the same lines and seen the end of the only life I had come to love and cherish. Once he felt my reluctance, the light in him turned. Joy curdled into anger so fast I could almost hear it happen. And it was directed toward me. This conversation was going to become something else. I knew it before he opened his mouth.“I don’t understand what you mean,” I said, and fear had already taken my voice and made it small. “I don’t—”“Why do you keep doing this to me?” The words came through his teeth. “Do I look like a fool to you? Do you enjoy toying with me?”“No. That is not what I meant. I am trying to tell you how I feel—”“Fuck that.” He was on his feet. “We are having this baby, Elizabeth.

  • From Lies To Loyalty    You’re Not Happy

Chapter 214: You're Not Happy ReeseI would not pretend I had missed the way Lizzie changed when the test entered the conversation. It had been there on the stairs, in the too-stiff nod, in the thin little *yeah* she had given me. It had been there again in the living room, when she would not hold my eyes for more than a second. She had left with Sav and had not come back. The longer the door stayed empty, the more certain I became that they were not talking about the weather or girl stuff. Roman noticed me watching the hallway. “You keep looking over there,” he said. “Lizzie?”“Yeah.” I kept my voice down. The living room was full of people who did not need this. “She’s been off since I told her to take a pregnancy test.” His brows lifted. “You think she’s actually pregnant?”“I’m almost sure of it.” Saying it out loud made the thing in my chest kick harder. “I also think she doesn’t want children. We’ve been circling the same fight for a long time. She promised me one in a yea
