Chapter 1

The King's Gambit

Roman’s POV

The loud cheers from the boys filled the air, but it was nothing compared to the loud silence in my head.

The locker room was filled with roars and the coach's smiley face beamed at me.

“Roman, what's the matter?” Davon noticed my unusual silence and tapped my shoulder.

“Uhm, nothing man.”

His hand reached for my cheek and tapped gently.

“Cheer up cap, we won the game! Now let's go party!” He chuckled and pulled me into his shoulder while the others cheered.

After a while of screaming round the school halls, we were back at the locker room, changed, but still hyped up, ready for the night party.

My heart raced as I reached for my phone, my eyes straying away from the screen. A deep sigh escaped my lips as I stared at it.

No calls, no texts. They said they were gonna be at the game, but their seats were empty at the stadium. Yet again, they had me fooled.

Every single time, all they do is make empty promises and never show up. It's more like they abandoned me to be by myself in that big house.

“Come on man!” Davon called as he raced for the day. “Whatchu sulking about?” He teased and my face twisted into a frown.

I grabbed my bag and raced after him. We got into the car and zoomed back to my penthouse.

While in the car, I kept on staring at the empty screen, their promises kept replaying in my head. How they'll be here to celebrate with me?

“Hey man,” Davon reached for my cold hands, and I shrieked out of my thoughts.

He stared into my eyes, his face heavy with pity and he tapped my chest softly.

“Don't beat yourself up man,” he said in a low tone. “I know you really wanted them there…”

I didn't want his pity, or anyone's pity. I wonder why I'm even disturbed by their absence.

I stopped him right there and held his shoulder.

"Who cares man? They're probably buying a new yacht in Monaco." I rolled my eyes at him and we giggled loudly.

“Let's just have fun tonight man.” I smiled.

A few moments later, we were at my house. It was all set up, loud music, the lighting was peak, it felt glorious.

We dashed out of the car together and all grabbed bottles of beer.

“To Roman!” They all cheered and the bottles clinked after, followed by the sound of the drink forced down their throats.

My eyes narrowed at the big house that felt more like a prison most of the time.

Win the game, get the applause, drink until you can't feel the silence waiting for you at home. That's the playbook, it works every time.

I smirked and crashed on the couch, watching the others dance as girls swooned over them.

“Who's that bitch over there?” I whispered to Davon, staring at her as she winked at me.

Davon’s eyes narrowed at me and a soft smile tugged across the corners of his lips.

“Who cares?” And we chuckled together. “Go get her man,” he pushed me up and the other boys cheered.

My eyes were fixed on her as I moved, my steps calculated and heavy and my beer in hand. I slammed the bottle on her table and leaned in, my breath heavy on her skin.

“You've been staring all night, why don't we go upstairs,” I raised an eyebrow.

She nervously forced a smile and gave me her hand while the other boys whooped from behind. I turned back at them and raised the bottle and just staggered with her upstairs.

“I'm Chloe,” she turned to me as we got up stairs, leaning in closer.

Her hand reached for my shirt and slowly unbuttoned it and my eyes widened as I felt her fingers in between my legs.

“I…”

I didn't want to hear anything from her or anyone. I just wanted to fuck till I can't think of anything else, especially my parents ditching me.

I quickly turned her against the wall and spanked her ass hard. Her eyes widened as I slid in my dick and I heard her soft moans, even though her mouth remained open.

I thrust in hard, and harder each time, the anger and frustration mixing with lust and I let it all out on her.

Our breaths were heavy against the wall as I moved in, deeper and deeper into her walls, destroying every gate that held me back.

"Roman... god, you really are as good as everyone says,” she managed to mutter.

I turned her over and held her neck, my eyes locked on her.

"Don't believe everything you hear. It's usually better." And my tongue moved along her neck, spreading heat all over her skin.

The night wore on and I couldn't remember much of what transpired between us, I sure knew it was good sex.

A loud yawn echoed through the room as I stretched my body, my tired eyes flipping open. The morning sun seeped in through the windows and there she was, by the corner of the laundry, covered in our clothes.

I stood up with a sigh and just walked over and just then, she called me.

“Leaving already, Roman?” Her soft voice called.

“Text me,” I shrugged.

She stood up immediately rushing towards me, her hand on her chest and her eyes still heavy.

“I don't have your number,” she begged, passing her phone to me.

My eyes rolled at her as I sighed.

“I have classes today, can't be late,” I snapped and headed out.

******

The fresh air of campus was heavy. My dark sunshades added style to my persona as I walked down the aisle, left hand in my pocket, heads up and coffee on the other hand.

Just then, my body crashed into someone and books flew all over the place.

The coffee spilled on my carefully ironed white shirt and mixed with the scent of my cologne, forming a new smell I didn't like.

She stood by the other side, her eyes widened in shock and embarrassment as she clung to the last book on her chest.

She wore an oversized pastel sweater, looking flustered. I carefully studied her as she dropped to the ground to pack the papers, not even looking at me like every other girl on campus would do when they see the hockey captain.

I was intrigued and I dropped to one knee and stared at her, helping her arrange the books and she still didn't know who I was.

"I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going..." She begged, flushed as she finally stood up.

I stood up with her and brushed my finger against hers as I handed her the last book with a smile.

"It's fine. It's completely my fault." I chuckled and cleaned my shades.

She smelled like warm vanilla as my fingers grazed my nostrils and she stared awkwardly.

No makeup, no clue who I am, and she's blushing just from a glance. Sweeter than anything I usually touch. This is going to be fun.

I smiled again and finally took off my arm from my chest and her eyes quickly spotted the stain on my shirt.

“Your shirt…” she was about to take out a towel when I stopped her.

“It's fine,” I nodded.

“I'm Roman by the way, Roman Vance,” I stressed the syllable on Vance, hoping she'll recognize my family name, but she didn't. She still stared at me, completely lost.

I caught a glimpse of her ID card as she was about to run off, and held her back, flashing a dimpled smile.

Alicia Rossi, she must be new here, I thought

"Since I nearly gave you a concussion with my coffee,” I chuckled, “the least I can do is buy you a proper lunch. Let me get your number, Alicia,” she stared at me surprised and I rolled my eyes at her ID card and we chuckled softly. “I don't bite."

"Okay... just lunch." She smiled and shyly handed me her phone.

I watched her go on and she turned back abruptly.

“Roman right?” She raised an eyebrow.

And I nodded back at her.

“I'll be waiting for your call, then.” She shyly said and ran off.

I chuckled as she went off and picked up what was left of the coffee.

I headed back to my car, tossing the car keys in the air as all I could think about was what I'll do to this confident new girl that expects me, Roman VANCE to call her. She's the first girl I've met that didn't swoon over me at first glance.

And just then, a loud SUV roars around the corner, cutting me off and halting suddenly with a loud screech.

"Hey! Watch where the fuck you're driving,"

But the door flung open and three massive men dressed in black suits stepped out immediately and headed straight towards me. Just as I was about to take off, a massive blow hit me from behind and as I dropped to the ground in pain, a black hood was shoved over my head, cutting off my vision as they dragged me away.

My heart pounded heavily as I threw my hands in all directions, jabbing and kicking hard, but it was no use. They overpowered me and shoved me into the back seat of the car and sped away. Zip ties clicked around my wrist despite how I struggled to keep my hands apart, digging into my skin and I pounded against the door, screaming through the hood.

"Do you know who my parents are?!” I screamed, but one of them fired at me.

“We both know your parents don't give two shits about you,” he cursed and I paused. They had done their homework about me, who could really be behind this? But I was relentless, still making offers.

“You're making a mistake! I have money! How much do you want?! Whatever they're paying you, I'll give you double if you let me go. I demand you let me go this minute!" I commanded with a thick voice, but a heavy blow landed against my head and my eyes finally shot close.
