Chapter 2

Author: Cocojam
Swallowing the emptiness in my stomach and the ache in my heart, I watched Ethan and Amber Collins feed each other, a primal intimacy flowing between them.

After dinner, Amber showed no signs of leaving. Instead, she settled back onto the sofa, staking her claim.

"Are you two living together?" I asked, my voice already laced with a low, wolfish growl.

Amber just shrugged, nodding like it was the most natural thing in the world, a challenge in her eyes.

I felt my inner wolf clawing to get out, and I struggled to swallow the bitterness in my heart.

A small smile played on Ethan’s lips as he looked gently at Amber.

“Yes, Amber’s all alone in this city, no pack to protect her. I was worried about her.”

“Her lease was up, and I had a spare room, so I told her to move in. That way, we can look out for each other.”

Amber pretended to be touched, tracing a finger along Ethan’s jawline, then sighing softly, her voice alluring.

“It’s a bit embarrassing, really. I’m a grown wolf, but I still can’t seem to manage without Ethan looking after me.”

She looked at me. “Sigh, what can you do? We grew up together, and I've just always been used to Ethan looking out for me! Can't change it now.”

“Things aren't like they used to be; there are more lone wolves out there now. It’s rare to find a male wolf like Ethan, so selfless and willing to help without asking for anything in return. Don’t you think so, Scarlett?”

I stayed silent, my claws itching in my palms.

Ethan chuckled and gave her a gentle nudge, their interaction far too familiar. “You always know what to say.”

After a bit more of their flirty banter, Ethan glanced at the clock.

He looked at me, a little awkwardly.

“Scarlett, it’s getting late. How about I take you to a hotel nearby for the night?”

He even picked up my suitcase, which I’d left by the door.

Seeing the luggage shoved in front of me, I froze. I couldn't hold it in anymore.

Tears streaming, I yelled at Ethan, "Ethan Reed, I drove for over ten hours to find you! How can you kick me out? Did you forget I’m your fated mate?"

From the moment I’d set foot in this city, the moment I first saw Ethan, he and Amber had been tangled up in each other's scents.

He clearly remembered all of Amber’s favorite things, acted like her mate right in front of me. He’d completely forgotten I was allergic to venison.

And now I find out he’s been living with Amber Collins in the mansion I bought for him, without me knowing.

And he was trying to kick me, his actual mate, out.

All those hours I'd spent driving here, travel-worn and full of hope, now felt like a cruel joke. A desecration of the mate bond.

Actually, the signs had been there all along.

After we graduated from the pack academy, Ethan didn’t want to stay and build his life in my family’s territory. He insisted on moving, miles away, to this city where humans and werewolves lived side-by-side.

At the time, some of our mutual pack friends warned me, said Ethan’s ex, Amber, was around here, and that I should be wary.

But I didn’t want to hold Ethan back from his so-called "ambitions" just because of some baseless suspicions.

I gave him my full support. I thought distance and time wouldn’t be an obstacle to our mate bond.

But Ethan grew colder, started making excuses to avoid our daily mind-links. He even instinctively pulled away when I tried to scent-mark him last time.

Especially this past month.

He started disappearing frequently, blaming it on “urgent pack business.”

We were at the stage where we were supposed to announce our permanent bonding to the council of elders. We’d even planned to meet both our families last blood moon.

But Ethan was completely unreachable that day, leaving me and my family waiting awkwardly at the grand ceremony.

The next day, he finally mind-linked an apology, making up some excuse about “something came up with work, urgent task” to cover it up.

Then he just acted like nothing happened and started discussing plans for the next full moon gathering.

Two days ago, he’d bailed again, no surprise there, claiming “work was swamped and my boss needed me to work late” and casually canceled the full moon trip I’d carefully planned.

Even though I was really disappointed, I agreed.

I knew he used to be a lone wolf, scared of being an outcast. So he always worked really hard, desperate to prove himself among werewolves.

So, this time, I took the initiative and came to Ethan’s city.

I never expected to be hit with a reality that shook me to my core.

Such a big interruption in the middle of the house handover made Dominic a bit hesitant about this city.Dominic sighed, a touch of weariness in his voice. "Scarlett, I'm realizing there are just too many unknown troubles in a strange city pack. The wolves here seem more complicated than enemies on the battlefield. I think I'll head back to my family territory first, report the situation, and then decide."In the end, after we both talked it over, Dominic temporarily gave up on buying the mansion because of this whole mess. We decided to list the house with a pack realtor and wait for a wolf who was truly meant for it.After quickly wrapping things up there, Dominic and I took the same flight back to my family's territory. To show my apologies, I specifically invited Dominic to a small, private full moon feast our family was holding.Because of Logan, my parents and the family elders had already heard of Dominic's reputation. They greatly admired him, this hero returned from the northe

I took Dominic to see the mansion, the one tainted by betrayal. He was quite pleased with the overall layout and how much moonlight it got, especially the private garden.Dominic asked curiously, his voice deep and magnetic, "Scarlett, this house is really nice. The feng shui and energy flow are great. Why are you in such a hurry to sell?"I didn't hide anything. I told him the whole story, including the disgusting things Ethan and Amber had done there.Dominic frowned, a flicker of disgust and disdain in his eyes."That is pretty gross. Don't worry, once I take over this territory, I'll use the purest moonlight power and my family's secret methods to thoroughly cleanse it. Then I'll redecorate properly before I can even think about moving in! Not a trace of their filth will remain."His words made me laugh, and some of the tightness in my chest seemed to ease.We were chatting and laughing as we left the mansion, planning to find a place for lunch and discuss the handover details. But

After saying goodbye to Logan Mitchell and getting back to the pack inn, I found a ton of missed call requests on my phone. All from Ethan Reed, buzzing with anxiety and anger.Since I hadn't responded, he'd sent me a barrage of mind-link messages, full of threats and unreasonable demands.[Scarlett Hayes, Amber Collins is fine. The pack physician checked her and said she was just weak from the Blood Moon ritual and getting overly emotional. It's not a big deal, but her soul is quite fragile, so she can't handle any more stress. You have to take responsibility for this!][I’ve thought about it since I got back. Maybe you were just so worked up today because you care about me too much. Your wolf lost control, and you made a mistake. To a certain extent, it's understandable. After all, you're the great Miss Hayes, used to getting your way.][But you can't go too far, you know? Like how you used a spell to forcibly break our bond, and you scratched Amber with your claws – that was too muc

I hired the pack's professional cleaning crew and had them scrub every trace and scent of Ethan Reed and Amber Collins from the mansion. But no matter what, I still couldn't stand the sight of this house. It felt tainted by their filth. After thinking it over, I decided I might as well just sell it.I mind-linked Logan Mitchell. Our families went way back, and his family had been developing their interests here for years. It was Logan I’d asked to help Ethan get into that werewolf company's core team. After settling down with Logan Mitchell in a werewolf-owned coffee shop, I told him everything that had happened in the last couple of days, including that humiliating bonding ceremony.Logan Mitchell was furious after I finished. "Scarlett, that scumbag Ethan Reed totally played you!" he roared. "What 'pack meeting he couldn't miss'? The company I got him into is famous for being laid-back! They never have mandatory overtime, especially not on important days like the Blood Moon or Full M

A few months after I started helping him out, Ethan actually asked me to dinner. At the restaurant where he worked. To be honest, before I even went, I kind of guessed Ethan knew something.Sure enough, after we sat down, Ethan slid a piece of paper across the table to me. It had a sum of money written on it.His face was a little flushed, and his voice was quiet, a bit awkward."Scarlett, I know about the funding. Thanks for helping me out behind the scenes, and for paying for me to join the 'Silver Moon Pack'.""Take this for now. Consider it an IOU. I'll definitely repay you properly in the future!"I had to laugh at how serious he looked. I quickly pushed the paper back."Ethan, don't stress about it," I explained. "Let's just be normal packmates. And really, you don't have to pay me back."That day, no matter how much I tried to refuse, Ethan couldn't get me to take that "IOU."But after that, he'd often bring me bread he’d bought from his job for breakfast. When I was at pack rit

Just then, an old wolf with a white beard and hair pushed through the crowd. He pointed at Ethan. "Well now, Ethan, my boy, what's wrong with your new mate here? Why is she on the ground? Her aura's so unsteady."Listen. New mate. How ironic.Ethan’s eyes lit up when he saw him, like he’d found a lifeline. He rushed over and pulled the elder to Amber's side."Elder Grey, quickly, look at Amber!" he urged. "She was hit by the backlash from a vicious curse my ex-mate cast. Her heart's weak, her soul's been shaken, and she fainted!"This Elder Grey seemed to know some old pack healing arts. He knelt, carefully checked Amber, even sniffed her aura. Then he looked puzzled. "Strange. This she-wolf's breathing and pulse seem fairly stable. Her soul-flame is a bit dim, but it doesn't look like a soul-shock. More like… she’s faking it."Ethan glared at him, his tone disrespectful. "Elder Grey, I thought you were a respected elder, that's why I asked for your help.""What do you mean, she's not
