The Carter’s family dining room was silent except for the soft scrape of expensive cutlery against porcelain plates.

Everything in the room looked perfect, as it always did. To anyone looking in from the outside, this was the home of a family who had everything.

But Chloe Carter knew better.

She sat at the far end of the table, nearly invisible, as usual. Across from her, Amelia was laughing quietly at something her mother had said, and her father, Richard Carter sat at the head of the table scrolling through documents on his tablet without looking up once. No one spoke to Chloe. No one ever did unless they needed something from her. She kept her eyes on her plate and continued eating.

Then Richard set his tablet down with a sharp sound that cut through the room.

Everyone looked up.

His face was serious in a way that made Chloe's stomach tighten before he even opened his mouth.

"We have a problem," he said, staring at all of them with a serious look.

Amelia frowned. Evelyn straightened in her seat.

"What happened?" Evelyn asked.

Richard rubbed his forehead slowly. "The company is bankrupt."

The words landed like something heavy dropped from a great height. Amelia's fork slipped from her fingers and rang against the plate. Evelyn's face was drained of color. For a long moment, no one spoke.

Chloe sat very still. The Carter Group had always been one of the most respected companies in New York. She had grown up in its shadow, had heard its name spoken with pride her entire life. Bankruptcy felt impossible.

"We've exhausted every option," Richard continued. "Investors are pulling out. Loans are overdue. If we don't act now, we lose everything. The house, the company, our reputation."

The word ‘reputation’ seemed to frighten Evelyn more than anything else. Her expression shifted into something close to panic.

"We can't let that happen," she said quickly.

"It won't." Richard's voice was calm, the kind of calm that meant he had already made a decision without consulting anyone. "I've arranged something with the Grey family."

The name settled over the table like a cold fog.

Everyone knew the Greys. Lucien Grey, in particular, was the kind of name people said carefully, if they said it at all. Cold, ruthless, powerful beyond measure. He had never been seen smiling in any photograph. People who worked with him described him in careful, guarded words. People who crossed him didn't usually get the chance to describe anything at all.

Amelia swallowed. "You mean Lucien Grey?"

"Yes." Richard folded his hands on the table. "The Grey family has agreed to help us, but they have one condition. “A marriage alliance." He continued while staring at his daughters.

The silence that followed was immediate and thick. Amelia stared at her father, and Chloe watched as understanding crossed her face, followed quickly by something fierce and final.

"No," Amelia said.

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Amelia—"

"I said no." She pushed back from the table, her voice rising with a tremor she couldn't quite control. "Everyone knows what he's like. He's cold, cruel, and impossible. I won't do it. I won't marry him."

Evelyn reached for her hand, trying to calm her, but Amelia shook her head over and over, tears gathering in her eyes.

And then Chloe felt it before it happened.

That particular stillness.

Evelyn turned her head slowly, and their eyes met across the table.

Chloe's heart dropped.

She knew that look. She had seen it her entire life, every time there was something unpleasant to be handed to someone who wouldn't fight back hard enough. Richard raised his eyes next. Then Amelia. Three pairs of eyes turning toward her, not with cruelty exactly, but with the particular ease of people who had already decided.

"No." Chloe said it before anyone could speak, her voice quiet but clear.

Evelyn frowned. "What do you mean, no?"

Chloe stood up slowly, her hands pressing flat against the table to steady herself. Her heart was hammering but she kept her face still. "I mean no. I won't marry him either."

Amelia visibly relaxed. She actually looked relieved, and that small, unconscious reaction cut deeper than anything else that had happened in the last five minutes. Being someone's relief, someone's escape, their backup option, their last resort. That was all Chloe had ever been in this house.

Richard sighed the way he sighed when a business negotiation wasn't going the way he wanted. "Sit down, Chloe."

"Why me?" she asked instead. The question came out raw, more vulnerable than she intended, and she hated herself a little for it. "Why is it me and not her?"

Nobody answered immediately, and the silence was its own kind of answer.

Evelyn spoke first. "Amelia is young."

"She's two years younger than me."

Richard said, "Amelia has a future to consider."

Chloe felt those words move through her chest like something sharp. ‘A future.’As though hers didn't count. As though it had already been decided, long before tonight, that her life was the one that could be spent. She had spent years absorbing the smaller versions of this, the overlooked birthdays, the conversations that stopped when she entered rooms, the way her achievements were acknowledged briefly and then forgotten while Amelia's were celebrated for weeks. She had told herself it wasn't personal, that it was just the way things were in this family. But standing here now, hearing it said plainly and without apology, she understood that it had always been exactly this personal.

"You can't do this," she said with tears shimmering in her eyes.

Evelyn looked at her with something that resembled patience, though it wasn't kind. "We raised you. We gave you a home, food, and education. You're acting as though we owe you more than that."

The words were designed to make her feel small, and they worked, the way they always worked, even when she could see exactly what was being done. She blinked hard and refused to let her eyes fill.

"You only chose me because Amelia said no," she said.

Nobody disagreed.

Not one word of protest from her father. Not a single defense from Amelia, who sat with her hands in her lap and her eyes on the table. Evelyn simply looked at her with the calm expression of someone waiting for a problem to resolve itself.

Richard reached beside him and slid a document across the table. It stopped in front of Chloe and she looked down at it without wanting to.

A marriage contract. Her name printed clearly on the line. A signature that was already her father's.

Already done.

Richard looked at her without flinching. "The contract is already signed."

And in that moment, Chloe understood something that she had been refusing to understand her whole life. She had never been a daughter in this house. She had always just been something useful, something available, something that could be arranged and moved and given away whenever the family needed it done.

She looked at the contract and said nothing.

During the dinner, Chloe felt invisible. The long dining table was filled with expensive dishes, polished silverware, and elegant laughter, yet none of it made her feel like she belonged. The conversation flowed naturally around the table, but somehow it always managed to pass over her.Richard and Lucien's father discussed business investments and upcoming projects. Evelyn happily joined Catherine in talking about luxury brands, social events, and influential families. Every topic seemed to revolve around wealth, status, and power.Even Lucien didn't utter a single word to Chloe. He sat beside her, yet it felt like they were worlds apart. His attention remained on his father as they spoke about business, his calm voice filling the room every now and then. Not once did he turn to ask Chloe if she was enjoying the meal or include her in the conversation.Amelia noticed everything.Every glance.Every silence.Whenever Catherine or Evelyn praised her, she accepted the compliments with a

“We're being invited to the Grey's family mansion for dinner,” Evelyn said excitedly as she informed her husband and daughter. There was obvious excitement in her voice, the kind that came whenever the Grey family was involved.“Just us?” Amelia asked, stopping halfway as she was about to chew a piece of fruit. She lowered it slowly, now paying full attention to what her mother was saying.“I'm sure she didn't invite Chloe,” she added with a smirk.“Actually it's a family dinner where everyone is invited, so Chloe would be coming with her husband,” Evelyn responded, not really caring whether Chloe was invited or not.“Oh, whatever. Then I'd finally get to ask how my dearest stepsister is doing,” Amelia laughed softly, her sarcasm impossible to miss.Evelyn turned to her husband with a curious look.“By the way, how is Chloe doing?”Before Richard could respond, Amelia spoke again.“I'm sure she's doing great now that she's married into a rich family,” she said, rolling her eyes.“Yeah

Lucien's phone buzzed on his desk in his office. He glanced at the screen, and saw his mother's name on it ‘why was she calling?’ he thought. He picked up."I want to have lunch with your wife," Catherine said on the other side of the phone before he could speak.Lucien leaned back in his chair. "Why?""Can't I have lunch with my daughter-in-law?"A pause. "I'll let her know."He ended the call and called his butler."Tell Mrs. Grey that my mother is expecting her at the Grey mansion for lunch. A driver will take her.""Yes sir."Chloe was by the window reading a book when the butler knocked on her door, “who is it?” She asked not looking away from the book she was reading. “It's me ma'am, Mr Grey told me to inform you that his mother wants to have lunch with you at the Grey's mansion.”She listened to the message, and wondered why his mother wants to see her. She pushed the thought and went to get ready. She didn't rush. She dressed simply, kept her makeup light, and clipped her moth

  • From substitute bride to CEO    Chapter 8: On paper only

Lucien sat in his room, staring at nothing in particular. He hadn't slept again after he left her room. He'd come back here, sat on the edge of his bed, and stayed there. What was he thinking? That was the question that kept circling back, refusing to leave him alone. What exactly had he been thinking when he walked into her room last night? He'd been drunk, yes. But drunk men don't just wander into rooms. They go somewhere they want to go, even if they won't admit it the next morning. He pressed two fingers to his temple. He had called her Amelia. He said the name out loud in his head and felt something cold move through his chest. He hadn't even realized it until this morning when the fog of alcohol had lifted and the night had replayed itself in fragments. Her face. Her silence. The way she had stopped fighting at some point, not because she wanted to, but because she had no choice. And then he remembered. The sheets. He had seen it before he left. A faint blood stain on the white

Later that night Lucien who was still in the bar was already drunk.“That’s enough,” Caleb said as he took the wine glass from Lucien just as he was about to gulp another liquor down his throat.“Give me that,” Lucien said unsteadily, trying to grab the glass back, but instead he staggered slightly on his feet.“You’re drunk Lucien, and you need to go home before you’re shown on the news tomorrow,” Caleb told him firmly.“I don’t want to go back to where that woman is,” Lucien said, shaking his head as frustration and irritation mixed in his voice.“Then do you want to ruin your reputation and be on the headlines tomorrow?” Caleb asked him back.Lucien didn’t respond. That silence was enough answer for Caleb. He sighed and stepped closer, lifting Lucien slightly so he could lean on him.“Damn you’re heavy,” Caleb muttered as he helped him out of the bar.“Just shut up Caleb,” Lucien replied weakly.“My car is parked at the back, and don’t worry my driver is here,” Lucien added.Caleb

  • From substitute bride to CEO    Chapter 6: Temporary

The drive to Lucien's penthouse was quiet. The silence inside the car felt uncomfortable, stretching endlessly between them. Chloe sat with her hands clasped tightly together on her lap, trying not to look nervous. Every now and then, she stole a glance at the man sitting beside her.Her husband.Just a few hours ago, she had been Chloe Carter. Now she was Chloe Grey.Yet the man she was married to looked as though he couldn't wait to get away from her.Lucien sat with his gaze fixed ahead, his expression unreadable. Not once since they left the courthouse had he looked at her. It was almost as if she wasn't there.Chloe swallowed hard and turned toward the window. The air inside the car suddenly felt heavy. She wanted nothing more than to lower the window and breathe.Slowly, she reached toward it."Don't touch anything."The cold voice broke the silence.Chloe immediately froze.Lucien wasn't even looking at her when he spoke. His eyes remained fixed ahead as though he was speaking
