Chapter 1

I, Ian Sheppard, put on the smile I had practiced countless times while brushing the buns with melted butter.

"First time here? I'll remember it next time you're here."

I flipped the buns over without looking up.

"Want extra cheese?"

Caitlyn Sullivan's gaze flickered.

"Every birthday cake you made for me had extra cheese. So you really still–"

"It's the most expensive set here." A woman reached over with her hand and interrupted Caitlyn. "But the cheese is made by the owner himself. It's pricey, but it tastes amazing!"

I handed the finished burger to the woman and smiled. "Thanks for the promotion. I'll make double cheese for you next time."

Caitlyn's expression darkened visibly.

She opened the cart door and sat inside.

I glanced over and said expressionlessly, "Sorry. It's a small business. No dine-in service."

She looked at me. "I'll pay extra."

"Sure." I continued sprinkling the toppings.

She stared at my slightly trembling hand and sighed softly.

"Have you had enough? Come home with me."

I didn't answer. I used a spatula to pick up the grilled patty.

"It's ready. Enjoy it while it's hot. I'll leave so I don't disturb you."

The moment I finished speaking, someone grabbed my wrist.

"Stop pretending, Ian."

Her eyes turned red. "If you really forgot about me, why is your hand shaking?"

I calmly replied, "The electric baton in prison caused it. The injury never healed."

The warmth in Caitlyn's face instantly disappeared.

"Mason was spoiled since childhood. He couldn't have endured that kind of suffering. I made you take the blame, but I had already given orders. No one dared lay a finger on you."

The part of my wrist she was holding was exactly where my old injury was. Pain shot through me, and I pulled away.

Seeing that I stayed silent, she sighed and softened her tone.

"I knew you wanted to come home the moment you showed up on the first day Nelly transferred schools. I know you miss us. You just wanted someone to give you a way out.

"I came to pick you up myself. Isn't that enough?"

She reached out and tucked my hair behind my ear, but her fingers touched a thin layer of oil.

She froze. Her brows furrowed slightly.

Meeting my eyes, she awkwardly cleared her throat.

"I'm not disgusted by you, it's just–"

I didn't care. I spread my hands and handed her a pack of tissues.

"One pack for two dollars. The price is clearly marked."

Caitlyn froze for a moment. Her gaze shifted to the sign behind me, and she clenched her jaw.

[Beer, soft drinks, and bottled water. This is a small business. No credit payment accepted.]

I continued calculating.

"Gourmet burger for fifteen dollars. Dine-in fee of five dollars. Tissue for two dollars. The total is 22 dollars."

Her eyes dimmed. She pulled out a hundred-dollar bill and threw it at my face. She sneered.

"Ian, your adoptive mother is already dead. Who are you putting on this pitiful act for?"

The smile on my face froze.

Caitlyn's eyes turned red as she reached for me.

"Sorry. I didn't mean–"

I shoved the gourmet burger into her arms and pushed her out of the cart.

I then climbed onto my tricycle. Pointing behind her, I shouted while riding away, "Leave quickly! The code officers are coming!"

Through the rearview mirror, I saw Caitlyn standing there with a dark expression while she yelled, "Ian, you're heartless!"

Mason's expression changed from fear to emptiness. He stood up, walked over to Caitlyn, wrapped his arms around her waist."Caitlyn, I only did it because I loved you too much."I was a fake heir. Before Ian came back, everyone said you and I were a perfect match made in heaven. But the moment he returned, everything changed. I was afraid you would forget me. I was afraid no one would want me anymore. Everything I did, it was only because I loved you too much."Caitlyn pried his fingers away."The person I was engaged to was a member of the Sheppard family, but you are not part of the Sheppard family. You never were."She raised the scalpel again. "How many times did you cut his face? I'll make you experience every single one of them."Mason suddenly backed against the wall. He pulled out a report with trembling hands. His eyes went wide. "No you can't! I'm the father of your unborn child!"Caitlyn stopped moving her hand.Mason looked like he had grabbed onto the last lifeli

I floated beneath the ceiling and looked down at the body lying on the operating table. It looked pale, thin, and lifeless.A white sheet was placed over the body up to the chin, revealing only a face full of scars.I laughed bitterly. In the end, I still hadn't saved enough money for the grave beside my adoptive mother's.The hospital corridor at midnight was quiet like a cemetery.I tried to pass through the window and leave, but something held me back. I could only drift around above the ward. Then I saw Caitlyn. She walked over quickly. Her shirt was wrinkled, and her eyes were bloodshot. There was a dried blood mark on her cheekbone. This wasn't the calm and elegant Caitlyn I knew. Every time she showed this expression, it was because of Mason. She stopped in front of the ward door for a moment. She then walked straight toward me.She passed through my body. She froze. She suddenly turned around and looked at the empty space behind her. She raised her hand and looked at

"Pull up the surveillance footage."Dr. Cameron hesitated for a moment, but he still went to the security office.Ten minutes later, a laptop was placed in front of Caitlyn. It was a black-and-white footage of the night from three years ago.An elderly woman lay on the hospital bed. Her entire body was wrapped in bandages, and her eyes were closed. The door opened. Mason walked in. He was in a suit with his hair perfectly styled and a gentle smile on his face.He sat beside the bed. The old woman opened her eyes."It's me, Mason."Her eyes widened instantly.Mason retrieved his phone, unlocked the screen, and held it in front of her.The video showed Caitlyn's operating room.Caitlyn was standing under the surgical lights with a scalpel in her hand. She was performing my face replacement surgery.I lay unconscious on the operating table. My face was covered with blood-stained gauze. My original features were already impossible to recognize. The old woman's body began shakin

The lights in the operating room were still on.Caitlyn leaned against the wall. Her fingers subconsciously rubbed against the edge of her sleeve. Her heartbeat suddenly went out of control."Get all of Ian's medical records. Bring the doctor who performed my surgery back then."She suddenly recalled some things. She recalled how I coughed up blood every time the seasons changed, but she had never asked why.She recalled how every time she brought up having another child, I would open my mouth, sigh, and refuse. Now she knew why.Back then, I wanted to say, 'The person who saved you was me. I can't have another child anymore. I'm in so much pain,' but I never said anything. That was because Mason had taken the chance first. He held onto fake medical reports while pretending to be her savior. She believed him.Footsteps came from the end of the hallway.Dr. Cameron, who had performed the surgery years ago, was dragged over. He was still wearing pajamas under his white coat.

Caitlyn didn't even know how she ended the call. How could I possibly have only one kidney?Someone must have tampered with things while I was in prison."Investigate."She pushed open her secretary's office door. Her voice was hoarse."What exactly happened to Ian during those three years in prison?"Her secretary froze for a moment and immediately stood up.Caitlyn didn't sit down. She paced back and forth around the office."I personally spoke to the prison warden back then. I told them to take care of him."It sounded like she was trying to convince herself. She believed no one would dare hurt her husband.Where did that kid who called me Dad come from?Could she know something about me?Caitlyn's secretary's fingers hovered over the keyboard. She carefully spoke."Dr. Sullivan, I found something about that kid.""Speak.""The girl's name is Millie. She's four years old."The secretary gulped."She isn't Mr. Sheppard's biological daughter."Caitlyn stopped walkin

My body moved before my mind could react.I lunged at Mason and grabbed him by his throat."How dare you? She was your biological mother!"Mason leaned against the wall. His eyes turned red as he laughed."So what if we were switched at birth? I was born to be rich. Why should she come looking for me? Who does she think she is?"Ian, anyone who treated you well deserved to die."Warm liquid gushed out from my nose.It seemed I didn't have much time left.Fine. I'd take someone down with me.My face was violently slapped to the side. I crashed into the wall.Caitlyn stood where she was. Slowly, she lowered her hand."Are you done?"Mason's health was ruined because he saved me. You only spent a few years in prison for him. What exactly are you complaining about?"You'll always be my husband. With that title, who would dare say anything to you?"She paused before gently wiping the blood from the corner of my mouth with her fingertip. Her voice softened."Mason took care of
