Give me your hand

My ex-boyfriend was a gambler.

He was a cheater and abused me verbally and emotionally.

I bought my first car when I was twenty. Worked my ass off so I could get an old car. He lost it gambling.

On that day, a drunk Kevin came to my job and went nuts.

He started screaming and insulting me, telling me how was my fault he lost my car in the game. How I turned his life miserable and what a huge slut I was to be serving men on a little bar near a high road.

It was the first time he tried to lay a finger on me.

My boss and some clients had to intervene. They called the cops on him and he fled before the police got there.

He never got caught and never tried contact with me after that.

We lived in a small town and I was so scared thinking he could find me anywhere that I just, handled my boss the resign letter, packed the little I had and moved to a bigger city without saying a word to anyone.

I was born and raised in that small town and never had the chance to know other places.

I was just mesmerized by the lights, the huge buildings, the stylish clothes. Everything was just so new and exciting that I never thought about the dangers.

On my first attempt to get to the house I was renting a room, a thug runned me over and stole my bag.

With little luck, my phone and my wallet were in my pocket so he got nothing of great value.

Getting in the house, Mikayla, a nice girl from Russia welcomed me. She showed my room and told me how things worked in that place. Later, she helped me find a job.

She worked at Montgomery Corporation as the CEO’s secretary. The were offering jobs at multiple departments but they favored who had experience, which I didn’t.

“It would be so nice if you got a job there! We could go to work together!”

“I don’t have any experience or qualifications to apply for a position like secretary or other. I was serving food and doing dishes in my last job…”

“Ok, so what they ask for experience or degrees? Just apply, no is guaranteed so, you have nothing to lose!” She was so enthusiastic, I felt bad for her. High expectations always kill us in the end.

“I’ll lose time and money to get there.”

“Not if you get the job. Just apply and see what happens.”

She was so persistent and I needed a job, so maybe she was right.

I applied an all I had to do was waiting.

I didn’t stood just by that application tho, I was throwing applications to every single offer I found online.

One week later I got a reply from Montgomery Corporation.

I tried to dress up by the wisdom and good sense of style of Mikayla and I was stunning.

My hair was pulled up in a classic bun and my new friend made my makeup like a pro. Mikayla borrowed me a classic black dress and shoes, since my type of clothing was more the comfy type.

I was optimistic.

Getting there, security asked for my ID. No one could get in without being identified and inspected. And I would find later, they would inspect every person coming out also.

The first thought that crossed my mind was: how insecure someone must be to go so far on security measures but then, a huge Corporation as Montgomery’s with great projects as they provided to the world of technology must have a lot of secret businesses so they could always be ahead the competition.

As I got through the identification process, I was told to wait on a waiting room with other candidates.

There were so many people in the room I started to feel claustrophobic. Not because the space wasn’t enough, the room was spacious and well decorated with fancy furniture, but because all of them appeared to be really qualified. More than me, at least.

A group of people were interacting and their manners were way too polished.

They were elegant, the talking was about the latest project released by the Corporation which I knew nothing about. That’s when I realized I was not prepared to the job interview.

I was at the edge of giving up when a lady in a beige dress came in and greeted us.

She had a tablet in hand and was explaining how the interview would be.

We would be calling in groups of five to talk a little about our life and job experiences and expectations about the future if we were to be admitted.

My anxiety reached its peak when I was called to be part of the first group. I so much wanted to die there but I didn’t, so observing the rest of my group, I just followed the lead.
