When our tense conversation ended, Matteo and I returned to the ballroom.

I was about to leave when he suddenly gripped my shoulder and pulled two amusement-park tickets from his pocket.

"I'm free this weekend. I'll take you to the amusement park."

A while ago, I'd told him I wanted to go to an amusement park and be a little kid for a day. I never thought he'd remember.

I tried to smile but couldn't. I pushed the tickets back toward him. "You should take Claire instead."

With that, I turned to leave.

Matteo frowned in disbelief, as if he hadn't heard me right.

He was about to say something else when a wave of gasps from the crowd cut him off.

"Oh my God, what's wrong with her face? That rash is horrible."

Matteo turned toward the commotion and saw a huge red rash spreading across Claire's face and exposed skin.

She stumbled through the crowd of guests in a panic, her face full of fear.

The moment she saw Matteo, she looked as if she'd finally found someone who could protect her. She threw herself into his arms, sobbing. "I drank the water Vivian gave me, and then I broke out in this rash..."

Matteo pressed his lips into a hard line and fixed his eyes on me. His voice dropped low. "Vivian! You act sweet and understanding to my face, then pull a filthy trick behind my back? You're a disgrace to this family!"

Without asking a single question, he decided I was to blame.

I clutched the hem of my dress, my knuckles white, my eyes already red. "I never handed her any water. You know me. If I hated someone, I'd just pull a gun."

Matteo hesitated, almost convinced. But then Claire began sobbing even harder in his arms, her face full of hurt and guilt. "I'm sorry, Vivian. Someone else must have used your name when they gave me the water. I'm so stupid..."

She pulled my gift from her bag and began opening it. "I'm sorry. You went to so much trouble to get me a gift, and I still got you all wrong..."

Before she could finish, she let out a scream and flung the gift box away like she'd lost her mind.

A huge spider crawled out of the box. Claire's eyes rolled back, and she passed out in Matteo's arms.

Matteo crushed the spider under his shoe. His expression went dark, a vein twitching at his temple as he roared, "What else do you have to say for yourself? Claire is terrified of spiders. Do you really think she'd risk her life to frame you?

"You're completely out of control! Guards, lock Vivian in the cell for the night. Maybe that'll teach her a lesson!"

Matteo carried Claire out.

I tried to go after him and explain. "I didn't put that spider in there. The gift I got her was jewelry..."

Matteo didn't listen to a word. After he put Claire in the back seat of the car, he shoved me away with one hand.

He'd pushed me harder than he meant to. I fell backward, and my still-healing gunshot wound struck the edge of a step. The pain nearly made me black out.

Several bodyguards noticed how pale I was and saw blood spreading across the back of my dress. One of them quickly called out to Matteo, "Don, Ms. Vivian is bleeding..."

I gritted my teeth against the pain and raised a hand to stop them. "No. Take me to the cell."

Matteo knew I was afraid of the dark. If locking me in the cell was the punishment he had chosen, I would accept it.

After this, I'd never long for Matteo's warmth again.

In the dark, freezing cell, my wound became infected, and I developed a high fever in the middle of the night.

Half-conscious, I felt like I was reliving the days after my parents died.

At ten years old, I'd been passed from one relative's house to another. I'd slept in storage rooms and eaten scraps.

Then Matteo appeared. He crouched and held out his hand, his voice gentle. "You must be little Vivian. Would you like to come home with me?

"Don't be afraid. As long as I'm here, no one in Sicily will dare bully you. I'll make anyone who ever hurt you pay tenfold!"

Back then, I took his hand and thought I'd found salvation and happiness.

Matteo reeled as if struck. He rushed upstairs and burst into Vivian's bedroom.Below the balcony lay piles of smashed jewelry, broken pieces of jade, and torn couture gowns.Matteo walked over to the bed, looking lost, and saw an unsigned letter beside it.With trembling hands, he opened it. There were only a few neatly written lines, but their message was unmistakably final."Matteo, I once told you that if you ever lost my necklace, I wouldn't want you anymore."Now the necklace is broken, the wedding dress is burned, and my heart is dead."I don't blame you, but I will never love you again. Don't come looking for me. Just pretend Vivian is dead."Matteo dropped to his knees on the cold floor, pressed the letter hard against his chest, and let out a broken, anguished sob."No, Vivian, you can't do this to me..."After a moment, he pulled himself together."Search! Use every resource the Doria family has! Get the entire European underworld network involved! Find her!"Matteo braced h

Claire lay in the hospital bed, her face pale. She slowly opened her eyes. When she saw Matteo sitting by her bed with a blank expression, she immediately looked hurt and close to tears."Matteo, our baby, our baby is gone... It was Vivian! She's so evil!"She reached out to grab Matteo's sleeve. But Matteo only stared at her, his eyes devoid of warmth.Claire's hand froze in midair, and a strange sense of panic gripped her. "Matteo, what's wrong? Don't scare me like this..."Matteo took out his phone, pulled up the video, and tossed it right in front of her.The video showed every second of Claire poisoning her own drink.Claire's eyes widened. Her face grew even paler, and she started shaking violently. "It's not real, Matteo. Let me explain. Vivian faked that video. She's trying to frame me!""A fake video?"Matteo let out a harsh laugh. "I pulled the restaurant's security footage myself. I heard every word you said to Vivian outside that restaurant!"Matteo rose, seized Claire by t

The moment the plane climbed into the sky, I looked down through the window at the island shrinking beneath me.The burn on my wrist still ached, but this time, my smile came easily.Matteo, in my last life, you drove me to the edge after three years of keeping me locked away and shutting me out. But this time, I'm walking away on my own. From now on, we're done with each other....At the hospital, Matteo's cold voice cut like a knife. "Find Vivian! Turn all of Sicily upside down if you have to, but find her!"Matteo went back into the hospital room. When he saw Claire lying in bed, bleeding heavily, he looked like a wild animal that had lost all control. His grip tightened around the phone, the veins in his hand standing out. He couldn't stop thinking about how calmly Vivian had said, "As you wish." The words cut deep.Vivian had been missing for three hours.A bodyguard said nervously, "Don, Ms. Vivian's phone is turned off. We can't track her location...""Keep calling! And shut do

Flames roared in front of me, and I sank to the floor, defeated. My mother's wedding dress burned to ash, sending up wisps of black smoke. I clutched the torn scrap of tulle to my chest. I wanted to sob, but no tears would come.I just stared blankly at the pile of ashes. After a moment, a hopeless laugh escaped me.Regret and hesitation flickered in Matteo's eyes, but they quickly vanished behind his usual cold expression."Since you've been punished, we'll let this go. Stay home and rest."With that, he turned and hurried out.Rosa, who had been standing at a distance, came over to help me up and tried to reassure me. "Ms. Vivian, I just found out what happened. Claire posted all about the engagement party online and claimed you got her fired. Everyone in mafia circles is laughing at the Doria family for failing to keep you in line."The advisors all demanded that you stand trial. The Don punished you today to get them off your back and keep the rest of the Doria family from coming a

Half-conscious, I felt a lightly callused hand brush the tears from the corners of my eyes. When I woke up again, I was in clean pajamas, lying in my own bed. When Rosa saw I was awake, she couldn't wait to tell me. "I knew the Don couldn't bear to punish you. That same night, he carried you out of the cell himself."When he found out you had a fever, he put all his business on hold and stayed by your bed the whole time. He didn't leave until this morning."Conflicting emotions surged through me. I didn't know how to face Matteo. But when I saw him come back in, I still smiled. "Matteo..."I'd only gotten out that one word when Matteo shot me a look so cold that the rest of my words died in my throat.Matteo clenched his fists and pointed at me. "Vivian, you used our family's influence to pressure Claire's director into canceling her contract. She had a breakdown and became depressed because of you! And you still have the nerve to call out to me?"The barrage of accusations left my hea
