Chapter 1

"Jon, I made these barbecue ribs just for you. Eat up."

At the dinner table, my wife's stepbrother, William Small, kept piling food onto my son Jonathan Barkley's plate. The fatherly affection in his eyes was impossible to miss.

A moment later, he got up and walked over to the couch, returning with a robot toy set. "This is for you. Do you like it?"

Ten-year-old Jonathan thanked him politely. "I love it. Thank you, Uncle William."

William grinned from ear to ear, while I watched the scene quietly.

Ever since my wife gave birth to Jonathan, William would drop by our house every few days. Later, for convenience, he simply moved in with us, claiming he wanted to help take care of Jonathan so I could focus on work.

Everyone knew how much he loved Jonathan. Our friends even joked that he cared about the kid more than I did, even though I was his father. Our relatives often praised him as a wonderful uncle, saying that with his help in raising Jonathan, I had much less to worry about.

I was usually busy with work, so William often attended Jonathan's parent-teacher conferences in my place.

Once, I had gotten off early and taken a detour to pick Jonathan up from school, only to see my wife and William walking out hand in hand with Jonathan between them, looking like a happy family of three.

The other parents assumed William was Jonathan's father and kept complimenting him. "Jonathan is so well-behaved. As his dad, you've done a great job raising him."

William didn't correct them. He simply ruffled Jonathan's hair with a proud smile. As for me, I just smiled and said nothing.

I was pulled back to the present when my wife, Esther Small, looked at Jonathan and said, "Your Uncle William loves you so much. When you grow up, make sure you take good care of him."

Jonathan nodded. "I will."

Under the table, William grabbed Esther's hand. She blushed.

The two of them flirted right in front of me. I pretended not to notice, lowered my head, and finished my meal. Afterward, I went out for my usual walk.

When I returned home, William was lounging on the couch watching TV. "Esther, I'm out of clean underwear," he said. "Go buy me some, and make sure it's the same brand I always wear."

Esther smiled. "Alright. I'll go right now."

When she turned, she saw me standing there. The smile on her face stiffened slightly. "I'm going out to buy something for Will."

I looked at her calmly. "Okay."

William glanced at me. "Sean, you know Esther has spoiled me since we were kids. You don't mind her buying underwear for me, do you?" His tone was smug, as if he was afraid I would miss what was going on between them.

I ignored him and headed upstairs.

In the middle of the night, Esther quietly slipped out of bed while I was asleep.

Minutes later, I made my way to William's room. Standing outside his door, I could hear the unmistakable sounds coming from inside.

Esther and I had been classmates in college. She fell in love with me at first sight during freshman orientation and pursued me. The rest of the story was pretty cliche.

Right after graduation, I proposed to her. Her family was poor, and many of my friends said I was too good for her. But I never cared. I firmly believed we truly loved each other.

After we got married, I arranged a job for her in my family's company. Every month, I sent money to support her parents, and I even paid to build them a new house.

Whenever her relatives ran into trouble, they came to me for help or to borrow money. I never turned them away. I even found jobs for several of them.

For years after we got married, Esther and I couldn't have children. One day, she suggested we try IVF, and I agreed. I know how badly she wanted a child. Plus, we weren't getting any younger.

Jonathan was born without any complications. I watched him grow up day by day, sent him to the best schools, and gave him all the best resources.

All the while, I allowed William to come and go from our home as he pleased, watching coldly as he carried on with my wife.

When my parents found out I'd been kidnapped, they immediately agreed to Esther's demands. While we waited, Esther grew increasingly agitated. She was afraid my parents would call the cops and worried she wouldn't get the money. She glared at me and snapped, "Call your parents again. Ask them where they are. Why aren't they here yet?"I frowned at her. "They'll be here." After a brief pause, I added, "Why don't you untie me first? Don't worry. I won't run. You'll get your money."Esther suddenly flew into a rage and kicked me as hard as she could. The chair tipped over with me still tied to it, and I crashed to the floor. Pain shot through my body, and tears welled up in my eyes. She grabbed me by the throat and roared, "I'm warning you. Don't even think about trying anything. If I don't get my money, I'll kill you!"I gritted my teeth and glared at her.Just then, I heard movement at the door. Soon, my parents rushed inside."Esther, don't hurt Sean. We brought the money. L

The next issue I needed to deal with was my marriage to Esther. After killing William, Esther went into hiding. The only thing I could do was hire a lawyer and file for divorce, cutting all ties with her once and for all.One evening, after work, I arrived at the parking garage. Just as I was about to unlock my car, a dark figure suddenly darted out from the shadows. It was Esther. She was covered from head to toe, with a cap pulled low over her face. If I hadn't looked carefully, I might not have recognized her.She grabbed my arm and burst into tears. "Honey, I'm innocent. William deceived me. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?"I coldly pulled my arm away. "Don't call me that. It makes me sick. I've already hired a lawyer and filed for divorce."Hearing that, Esther broke down. She dropped to her knees, crying uncontrollably. "Honey, I really know I was wrong. Please don't be angry with me. We can't get divorced! I want to hide overseas. Give me a million dollars."

William kept dodging, but he still refused to admit anything. "Esther, don't listen to Sean. Believe me. Jon is your son. That report is fake."Esther hesitated for a moment. Seeing her waver, I couldn't help but laugh. "This is exactly why I said you're an idiot, Esther. If the report I gave you is fake, then why don't you take Jonathan for another test yourself?"She stared at me for a long moment. Seeing how confident I was, she realized I wasn't the one lying. Then, she turned back to William and continued kicking and punching him. "You bastard! You're still trying to lie to me? I won't fall for it again. Talk! Whose child is he?"William stubbornly insisted that he was telling the truth.I folded my arms, watching them fight. The resentment that had been lodged in my chest for ages finally eased a little. "Let me answer that for him," I said.Back then, when I discovered that William had deliberately swapped my sample, I was furious. My original plan had been to confron

The recording made it clear that Esther and William had planned everything. Their goal had always been my money.Back when Esther was lying in the hospital bed after giving birth, I had overheard their conversation. They had been together behind my back for years. To get their hands on my fortune, Esther had suggested IVF. Then, William switched my sample with his own. That was how Esther had ended up giving birth to his child. As Jonathan was my only son, everyone naturally assumed he would inherit my company one day.Several employees spoke up indignantly."Those two are absolutely shameless. They used their own child as a pawn just to steal Mr. Barkley's company.""Imagine having parents like that. What terrible luck."Hearing that, William turned toward Jonathan in a panic. "It's not like that, Jon. Let me explain."He reached for Jonathan, but Jonathan took a step back, avoiding him. His lips were pressed into a tight line, and his fists were clenched at his sides. His e

My mom looked at me anxiously. "Sean, what on earth is going on?"I patted her hand reassuringly. "Mom, don't worry."Today, I was going to make them pay for all the years of humiliation and misery they had put me through.I turned to Esther. "Did you really think you and William could keep your affair hidden forever?"My assistant stepped forward and handed me a remote control. I turned on the projector. The giant screen lit up, showing two entwined bodies, their moans filling the room. The people in the video were none other than Esther and William.Esther instantly panicked. "Turn it off!" she screamed. "Turn it off!"William clearly hadn't expected me to have those videos. He rushed toward me, trying to snatch the remote from my hand. But my assistant stepped in and blocked him.Esther shouted furiously, "Sean, what the hell are you trying to do?"The employees began to murmur among themselves."Even if they aren't blood-related, that's still pretty messed up.""This is m

I saw through Esther's intentions immediately, but I didn't let it show. Gently freeing myself from her embrace, I said, "Next week is the company's celebration dinner. I'll make the announcement then."Esther's eyes lit up. She quickly concealed her excitement and faked an affectionate tone. "Once Jon takes over the company, you won't be as busy anymore. Then, we can travel abroad together and relax."I watched her performance with quiet amusement and said nothing.Soon, the day of the company's dinner arrived. The venue was packed and lively. I stepped onto the stage to deliver my speech. Near the end, I announced that Jonathan would be taking over the company, then signed the share transfer documents on the spot.As thunderous applause erupted throughout the hall, William suddenly walked onto the stage and headed straight toward me. He took out a paternity test report and handed it to me."Years ago, I also tried to have a child through IVF," he said. "But the hospital mixed up
